期待する。
Expect is a word that even high level students get wrong sometimes. It can cause a bit of confusion when used incorrectly so be careful.
expectは、レベルの高い生徒さんでさえ時々間違える言葉です。間違った使い方は、ちょっとしたごたごたのもとにもなりかねませんので、気をつけましょう。
For example take a look at this sentence.
例えば、この文を見てみましょう。
Mr. Honda is a fantastic player, we are expecting him.
本田はいい選手です。私たちは期待しています。
In English this sounds like Mr Honda is a fantastic player and he will be arriving here soon.
この文は、英語では、本田はいい選手で、もうすぐここに到着する、と言っているように聞こえます。
We can’t just use expect with nothing following in English or it just means that the person will be arriving at some point.
英語で、期待するという意味を表すには、expectの後に何か続けないといけないのです。expectを単独で使うと、文中の人がある地点・時点に到着することになる、という意味にしかなりません。
This is better.
こちらの方がいいですね。
Mr. Honda is a fantastic player and we are really expecting him to do well for Japan in the World Cup.
本田はいい選手です。彼がワールドカップで日本のために活躍することを、私たちはとても期待しています。
It can be used in the negative too.
expectは、否定的な文脈でも使えます。
England are playing Brazil in the first match. We don’t really expect them to win but you never know.
イングランドは、初戦でブラジルと戦うんだ。僕ら、勝ちはあんまり期待していないんだけど、どうなるか分からないよ。
It can also be used to talk about weather.
expectは、天気について話すのにも使えます。
It’s nice now, but we are expecting heavy rain later.
今はよいお天気ですが、後で大雨になるでしょう。
Or to talk about someone being pregnant.
あるいは、誰かが妊娠していることを話題にするときにも。
I saw Ailsa the other day, she’s expecting her second baby in August!
こないだエルサに会ったんだけど、8月に2番目の子が生まれる予定なんだって！
