ジェイミー先生、お誕生日「おめでとう」

As I’m sure most of you are aware yesterday was the birthday of one of the founding fathers of our school, I don’t want to name any name’s but it was mine. (Jaimie).

きっと多くの皆様がお気付きのことと思いますが、昨日（注）は我が校の創立者のうち1人の誕生日でして、誰のとは言いたくありませんが、私（ジェイミー）の誕生日でした。
（注）ジェイミー先生はこのブログを9月8日に書きました。

I noticed yesterday that a lot of people said congratulations to me and I was confused as I hadn’t put any effort at all into becoming one year older, if anything I’m trying to reverse the process.
昨日、たくさんの人が私にcongratulations（おめでとう）と挨拶してくれたのですが、複雑な心境でした。私は1つ年をとるのに全く何の努力もしなかったし、どちらかというと、その逆を行こうとしているからです。

One of the difficulties of learning a language is trying not to think in your own so instead of saying congratulations, which is often used in Japanese,  it’s better to simply say…
言語を学ぶ上で難しいことの1つは、自己流に考えないようにすることで、congratulationsーおめでとう は日本語でよく使われますが、その代わりに、シンプルにこう言う方がいいですね・・・

Happy birthday.
よい誕生日を。

The same goes for new year.
新年も同様です。

Happy new year.
よい新年を。

Congratulations is used on many occasions for example
Congratulationsはたくさんの行事で使われます。例を挙げると、

Getting engaged/ married
婚約・結婚

Becoming pregnant/ Having a baby
妊娠・出産

Passing a test
試験に合格した時

Getting a new job
新しい仕事に就いた時

Winning an award
受賞

A sporting achievement.
スポーツにおける実績。

You might see ‘Happy Wedding’ on greetings cards in Japan, but this is something we never say as a greeting, it would always be congratulations.
Also, sometimes people make the mistake of saying
日本では、グリーティングカードに「Happy Wedding」とあるのを目にすることがあるかもしれませんが、英語でこういう挨拶をすることは決してありません。この場合は常にCongratulationsです。
また、このような間違いも時々聞かれます。

I went home at happy new year.
よいお年を に帰省しました。

Remember happy new year is a greeting and not used to describe the time.
Happy new yearは挨拶表現で、新年という時を表す表現ではないので、注意しましょう。

I went home at new year.
新年に帰省しました。

Lastly, since I’m feeling a bit old today here are a couple of idioms to talk about age.
最後に、今日は少しばかり老け込んだ気分になっているので、年に関する慣用表現をいくつか。

Long in the tooth.(getting too old for something)
（歯茎が後退して）歯が長く見えて（あることをするには年をとりすぎていて）

I think I may have to give up kickboxing soon, I’m getting a bit too long in the tooth for it.
キックボクシングはもうすぐ諦めないといけない気がする。ちょっと年が行き過ぎてきたことだし。

No spring chicken. (not that young)
春に生まれた若鶏ではない。（もう若くはない）

How old is Mrs. Robinson anyway?
それはそうと、ミセス・ロビンソンっていくつだっけ？

I don’t know but she’s no spring chicken.
知らないけど、もう若くはないよね。

Knee high to a grasshopper(very young)
バッタにとって膝の高さしかない（非常に幼い）

How old were you when you started playing football?
サッカーを始めたのって、いくつの時？

I can’t remember but I was knee high to a grasshopper.
覚えていないけど、すごく小さかったな。
