今週末のレッスン内容–ホームステイ

今週末のレッスン内容–ホームステイ

Hi again. Today I want to talk a little about what I will be teaching this weekend in Akasaka.

The topic for our classes this week is “Homestay” and with 2 of my students heading off to Canada for a year this summer, the timing couldn’t be better.

What will be focusing on mainly, especially in the level 1 and 2 classes, will be how to ask permission and also how to respond politely to a request in both the affirmative and the negative.

Level 1
Can I use the computer? コンピューターを使っていいですか?
May I use the computer? コンピューターを使っても宜しいですか?
Is it okay if I use the computer? コンピューターを使っても大丈夫ですか?
Of course. もちろん。
Sure. もちろん。/どうぞ。
No problem. 問題ないです。
Go ahead. どうぞ。
Sorry, not just now. すみません、今はちょっと。
Can you do it later (please)? 後でしてもらえませんか?

For level 2 we will of course, be starting of with a discussion as usual and then more of the same from level one but will be introducing the use of “ Would you mind if I … plus past tense to form a question.

Level 2
Have you ever done a homestay? 今までにホームステイをしたことはありますか?
What were some of the good and bad points? いい面と悪い面はなんでしたか。
What do you think some of the good and bad points might be? いい面と悪い面はなんだと思いますか。
What did you worry about before going? 行く前に心配だったことは何ですか。
What would you worry about before going? 行く前に心配なことはなんだと思いますか。
Would you open up your home for travelers from overseas? 海外からの旅行者にあなたの家を提供したいと思いますか。
Could I use the computer please?  コンピューターを使わせてもらえませんか?
May I use the computer please?  コンピューターを使っても宜しいですか?
Would you mind if I used the computer?  コンピューターを使わせていただいても構いませんか?
Not at all.  構いませんよ。
Sorry, not at the moment. すみません、今はちょっと。
I’d rather you didn’t at the moment please. 今はちょっとしないでいただければと思うのですが。
Can you wait till later please?  後まで待ってもらえますか?

And finally, for level 3, we will be going into a much deeper discussion on the merits and demerits of home stays and we will be using negative interrogatives to ask questions.

Level 3
Why do you think homestays are so popular amongst Japanese travelers? ホームステイが日本の旅行者にとても人気なのはなぜだと思いますか。
Have you ever experienced a homestay in another country? 外国にホームスティの経験がありますか。
What were some of the best and worst things about it ? いい面と悪い面はなんでしたか。
What do you think some of the advantages and disadvantages may be? メリットとデメリットはなんだと思いますか。
What were your concerns before going? 行く前の心配事はなんでしたか。
What would your biggest worries be if you were going to do a homestay? ホームスティに行くとしたら、何が一番の心配事と思いますか。
Can you imagine any culture differences that may cause problems between a host family and a foreign visitor? ホストファミリーと外国人客の間で文化の違いによる問題が起こることを想像できますか。
You don’t mind if I borrow the phone charger, do you? 充電器をお借りしてもいいでしょうか。
Not in the slightest, help yourself. 全く問題ありません、ご自由にどうぞ。
You wouldn’t mind if I switched on the T.V, would you? テレビをつけても良いでしょうか。
Not at all, be my guest. 遠慮なくどうぞ。
You don’t happen to know if there is a Citibank near here, do you? ひょっとしてここに近くにシティバンクがあるかどうかご存知ですか。
You don’t know where I can change some money, do you? どこで両替ができるか知っていますか。

Aya’s-blog イギリスで部屋を借りる

Aya’s-blog イギリスで部屋を借りる

むかーし昔、若さゆえか怖いもの知らずののんびり屋だった私は、当時結構ギリギリまで焦らず家を探していたなぁっという記憶があります(^^;;

ビジネス英語でよく使う表現 – a foot in the door

Hello everyone, today I’m going to show you how to use this expression

a foot in the door

This means to be able to enter an organisation, field of work or study, or a type of business or company. It usually means that when you do finally enter said field or company, your chance of success will be great.

For example.

I took me a long time to get an interview at the company, but I finally got my foot in the door.

There are many aspiring actors living in Hollywood, but most never get their foot in the door at any major studios.

I wanted to become a journalist but I’ve heard it’s really hard to get your foot in the door.

Hope that comes in handy.
Jaimie.

皆さんこんにちは。今日は”a foot in the door”の使い方について説明します。

a foot in the door
機会を得る

For example

- How to be a more fluent speaker – 3) Emphasizing the most important words in an English sentence and using pausing as part of your speech.

Today I would like to talk about two things that you can do to sound more natural when speaking English.

1)Emphasizing the correct words in the sentence

2)Pausing between phrases

If you want to sound natural in English you’ve got to emphasize what you think the most important words in the sentence are. Also pausing very shortly at the correct place is a very good way to command attention from your listener.

For example the sentence “I think Kensington is the best school in Fukuoka because it maximizes our students speaking time and thus speeds up their conversation improvement.” Should sound more like

“I think Kensington is the (Pause) BEST school in Fukuoka because it (Pause)  MAXIMISES our students SPEAKING TIME  and thus (Pause)  SPEEDS UP  their CONVERSATIONAL IMPROVEMENT.” The word in Caps should be spoken with extra stress and when there is a (Pause) we should pause for about half a second to build up anticipation from the listener.

What do you think? Do you think you can master it? We are always at your disposal to help in any way we can. See you at the classes!!

“I think Kensington is the best school in Fukuoka because it maximizes our students speaking time and thus speeds up their conversation improvement.”

と言いたいときは、

“I think Kensington is the (Pause) BEST school in Fukuoka because it (Pause)  MAXIMISES our students SPEAKING TIME  and thus (Pause)  SPEEDS UP  their CONVERSATIONAL IMPROVEMENT.” と言うのがいいです。

大文字の箇所はより強調し、(Pause)のところは少し間を空ける事で聞いている人の期待を膨らませます。

どうですか?マスターできそうですか?どんな方法でも私たちにできることは手助けしますよ。また授業で会いましょう!

トラベル英会話 – とても美しい世界遺産100選

Travel English – 100 very beautiful world heritage sites!

Hello everyone, while preparing for my world heritage site class I came across this very interesting list of 100 very beautiful world heritage sites. One of the main reasons we learn a foreign language is to travel and what better thing to do while travelling than visit some of the most beautiful places in the world.

This is a very good site to check before the class to learn some very beautiful looking world heritage sites.

http://www.worldofwanderlust.com/100-of-the-most-beautiful-unesco-world-heritage-sites-to-discover/

How many of these places have you been to? I’ve been to about 20 and my favourite until now is Number 21, the Historic Centre of Rome, Italy.

I hope I can go to more in the future!

トラベル英会話 – とても美しい世界遺産100選

みなさんこんにちは!今週末の「世界遺産」についての授業の準備をしているときに、とっても美しい世界遺産100選のサイトを見つけました。

私たちが言語を学ぶ大きな理由のひとつは、旅行に行く事だと思います。旅行で世界中の最も美しい場所を訪れることより素敵なことはありません。

このサイトは授業の前にチェックするといい、とても美しい世界遺産が載っています。

http://www.worldofwanderlust.com/100-of-the-most-beautiful-unesco-world-heritage-sites-to-discover/

この中でいくつ、あなたは行った事がありますか? 私は20箇所行きましたが、今までで一番好きな場所は21番のイタリア、ローマのコロッセオです。

日常英会語レッスン – イギリスのスラング – dodgy

Today I’m going to introduce you to another word that you hear all the time in britain. The word is “dodgy” and is a very good English word to use if you want to sound natural when speaking to other English speakers.

In British slang terms, ‘dodgy’ refers to something wrong, illegal, or just plain ‘off’, in one way or another.

Ex.1  I had a dodgy kebab last night and I don’t feel right.
Ex.2  There’s just something dodgy about him, I wouldn’t trust him.

We’ll also answer why or why don’t  we want to go somewhere with

Then we will use the present perfect and past tense to talk about which world heritage sites we have been to up to now and ask and answer follow up questions

I’ve been to the Pyramids in Egypt and to the Statue of Liberty. エジプトのピラミッドと、自由の女神を訪れたことがあります。

Yes, I’ve been there. はい、行ったことがあります。
When did you go there? いつ行きましたか?
How long did you stay there? そこにどのくらい滞在しましたか。

We’ll also practice how to answer the how was it question as in
How was it? どうでしたか?
It was really nice. How about you? Have you ever been there? とてもよかったですよ。あなたはどうですか?行ったことはありますか?
It was great. すてきでした。
It was OK. まあまあでした。
It was terrible. ひどかったです。
and finally talk about specific world heritage sites in Japan.

Level 2
The Level 2 class is similar to Level 1 with slightly more advanced grammar and vocabulary but as always students have much more freedom with the conversation and are expected to continue it for longer. Also at the end of the class, students will do a role play about Japanese world heritage sites with one student assuming the role of a foreign visitor and the other giving him travel recommendations.

Level 3
In the level 3 class in addition to talking generally about travelling to world heritages sites we’ll also learn some good adjectives to use when describing them such as:
picturesque 絵のように美しい
bustling にぎやかな
captivating 魅惑的な、心をとらえるような
rustic ひなびた
ancient 古代の、古色蒼然とした
charming(for a place) (場所が)素晴らしい、魅力的な
cosmopolitan 国際的な、洗練された
touristy (通例悪い意味で)観光客の、旅行者向けの、観光地化された

The level 3 class will also end with some pair role plays.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in class!
Tim
