子どもの頃の夏の思い出

みなさんこんにちは！
先週末のレッスンテーマは「夏」。
mosquitoes, cicadas, barbeque など、夏にまつわる色んな単語が出てきましたが、ケンジントンでは「夏が嫌い」という生徒さんがとても多かったですね^^

確かにこのジメジメと猛暑で、疲れがドッと出ている方も少なくないのではないでしょうか？

先週末の授業の中で、「夏と言えばラジオ体操！」という話しが出てきて
子供の頃の夏を思い出したのですが、
私の夏の思い出と言えば、、「ラジオ体操に1度も行けなかったこと」です。

13歳まで水泳をやっていたのですが、みんなオリンピックを目指して練習している強いスイミングスクールだったので、
私たちに普通の夏休みはありませんでした。笑

毎日練習は早朝からで合宿もあったので、ラジオ体操には1回も出れず
お友達が台紙に可愛いスタンプを押してもらっているのが、とっても羨ましかった記憶があります^^:

あまりどこかへ遊びに行った記憶はなく、ひたすらスイミングにいたように思いますが、それはそれでかけがえのない経験でしたし、一生付き合える友達もたくさんできたので、私にとってはいい思い出です^^

みなさんにとって忘れられない夏の思い出は何ですか？

まだまだ夏は続きますが

sell (something) at a loss: to sell something at a price below cost
出血価格で売る: 原価より安い価格で売ること

Amazon is known to sell its hardware at a small loss.
アマゾンは、ハードウェアを、原価より少し安くして販売することで知られている。

How to study English – How often do you?

Hello again, today I’m not going to be giving you advice on how to study, I’m just going to show you a simple piece of grammar that everyone seems to have real difficulty getting into their heads even though it is really quite simple.

When we talk about how often we do something, if the time phrase is in the singular we use a/ an before the time phrase.

Example

“How often do you go to the gym?”

“I go once a week.”

The timer goes off twice an hour to remind you to take the bread out of the oven.

As you can see in the examples above, we have used the time words week and hour in the singular so the prepositions are a/ an.

On the other hand if the time phrase is in the plural you replace a/an with every.

Example.

“ How often do you go to the gym?”

“ I go once every two weeks”

The timer goes off once every 2 hours to remind you to change the temperature.

And there you have it. It’s really so easy but I often hear my students commenting on how difficult this is.

So remember

Singular a/ an
Plural every

みなさんこんにちは！今日は勉強法についてのアドバイスではなく、たとえ本当にシンプルなことでもみなさんが難しく感じていそうな文法を見せたいと思います。どれくらいの頻度でやっているか？という話しをする時には、時を表すものが1であれば、数字の前にaかanを使います。

例えば、

“ How often do you go to the gym?”

“I go once a week.”

タイマーはパンをオーブンから出すのを思い出させるために1時間に2回鳴ります。

この例えのように期間を表す時はweekやhour(1週間に○○、1時間に○○)を使うのでその前はaやanになります。

一方で期間が複数(2週間に○○など)になると、aやanの代わりにeveryを使います。

例えば

“ How often do you go to the gym?”

“ I go once every two weeks”

タイマーは部屋の温度を変えることを思い出させるために、2時間に1回鳴ります。

どうですか、とっても簡単ですよね？でも生徒さんからは難しいとよく聞きます。

これを覚えてください。

単数の時は a/an
複数の時はevery

みなさんが今からこれを使うのが待ちきれません！

Travel English-making an invitation

Hello everyone. One of the big differences between Japanese and western culture is that in the west we tend to spend a lot of time at our friends’ homes, we often have house parties (sometimes completely unplanned) so it isn’t unusual to be invited to or invite people to your home. Here are some phrase I hope you find useful if you ever find yourself in that situation.

a dinner party　夕食会、晩餐会

a barbecue　バーベキュー

a housewarming　新築祝い、引っ越し祝い

a birthday party　誕生日パーティー

watch the footballサッカーの決勝戦を見る

a poker night　夜通しポーカーをすること

a film night　夜通し映画を見る

We are having a party on Saturday. Would you like to come?　土曜日にパーティーをします。よかったら来ませんか。

Sounds fun, I’d love to come.　楽しそうですね。喜んで伺います。

We are having a party next Saturday. Can you make it?　次の土曜日にパーティーをします。来られますか。

Next Saturday? Yes, I can make it.　来週の土曜日。はい、行けます。

Sorry, I’d love to, but I’m meeting a friend that day.　ごめんなさい、行きたいけどその日は友達と会う予定です。

No, I’m sorry. I can’t make it that day.　いえ、すみません。その日はだめなんです。

Oh, that’s a shame. I’ll invite you again next time. 　ああ、それは残念ですね。また次回お誘いします。

It’s no big deal, you can come next time.　大したことはありません、次また来て下さい。

What time should I be there for?　何時に来ればいいですか。

The party kicks off at 8:00.　パーティーは8時からです。

Hi, Jaimie, come in and make yourself at home.　やあ、ジェイミー。入って寛いでください。

Hi, Tim. Sorry for turning up late. I brought some beer.　やあ、ティム。遅くなってごめんなさい。ビールをもってきました。

日常英会話レッスン – a few cans short of a six pack

Hello again.

I’m going to show you one of my favourite expressions today, I’d love to hear one of you using at the school in the future.

“ a few cans short of a six pack”

This is a wonderful expression and it means that someone is quite eccentric or a bit crazy.

I have the perfect candidate in mind as an example for this sentence but I won’t name any names, all I can say is he is an English teacher in Fukuoka and he runs his own schools in Yakuin and Akasaka.

“Have you met Hiromi’s husband?”

“No, why?”

“He’s a nice guy, quite funny, but I think he’s a few cans short of a six pack!”

This expression can also be replaced with this phrase..

a few sandwiches short of a picnic

Don’t be shy to give it a go, we really do use this in everyday conversation.

今日は皆さまに私の好きな表現を紹介したいと思います。皆さんが今後この言葉を学校で使っているところを聞いてみたいです。

“ a few cans short of a six pack”
“ちょっと頭が足りない” “”おバカさん”

この表現はとても素晴らしく、ちょっと変わっている人やcrazyという意味です。

下記の例文はある人を思い浮かべて作りましたが、名前は言えません。ただ言えることは、福岡で英語の先生をしていて、薬院と赤坂で英会話学校を運営している人です。

“Have you met Hiromi’s husband?”
「ひろみの旦那さんに会ったことある？」

“No, why?”
「ないよ。なんで？」

“He’s a nice guy, quite funny, but I think he’s a few cans short of a six pack!”
「彼ってステキで面白い人だけど、ちょっと変わり者なの！」

またこんな感じでも置き換えることができます。
a few sandwiches short of a picnic

毎日の会話でよく使うので、恥ずかしがらず使ってくださいね。

週末のレッスン内容 in 赤坂・薬院校 – 夏

Hello everyone, this week’s classes at the Yakuin and Akasaka classrooms will be about the summer.

Level 1
We will practice some summer expressions such as
cicadas　せみ
shaved ice　かき氷
firework displays　花火大会
going to the beach　海に行くこと
having a barbeque　バーベキューをすること
going on holiday　休暇旅行に行くこと
going camping　キャンプに行くこと

talk about different levels of like as in
Do you like firework displays?　花火大会は好きですか。
Yes, I love them.　はい、大好きです。
Do you like going to the beach?　海に行くのは好きですか。
Yes, I quite like it.　はい、けっこう好きです。
Ummm, I don’t mind it.　うーん、どちらでもないです。
No, I can’t stand it.　いいえ、我慢できません。

Practice the difference between the past and present perfect tenses.
Did you go to a firework display last summer?　去年の夏は花火大会に行きましたか。
Have you been to a firework display this summer?　今年の夏は花火大会に行きましたか。
Yes, I have once.　はい、1回行きました。
No, I haven’t yet.　いいえ、まだです。

and talk about Obon using
go back to my hometown　帰省する(ふるさとに帰る)
visit my grandparent’s house　祖父母の家に行く
pray for my ancestors　先祖のために祈る
clean my ancestor’s tomb　先祖の墓を掃除する
have work　仕事がある

Level 2
The level 2 class will be similar to the level 1 but we’ll also use
fond of　…が好きで

to talk about our likes and dislikes as in
Are you fond of cicadas?　せみは好きですか。
No, I’m not at all fond of them.　いいえ、まったく好きではありません。

expand our conversation longer and also talk about our childhood summers using “used to” as in
How did you you spend your summers when you were a child?　子供の頃、夏はどのように過ごしましたか。
When I was a child, I used to wear a yukata in summer, go to summer festivals and eat shaved ice.　子供の頃は、夏に浴衣を着て、夏祭りに行き、カキ氷を食べました。

Level 3
In the level 3 class we’ll have a wider conversation about summer covering our likes, dislikes, habits, memories past and future summer plans etc.

We’ll also use more advanced vocabulary to talk about Obon in more depth:
honor the spirits of one’s ancestors　先祖の霊を祀る(敬意を払う)
commemorate one’s ancestors　先祖を偲ぶ
hang lanterns in front of houses to guide the ancestors’ spirits　先祖の霊を導くため、提灯を家の前に吊るす
pray at one’s grandfather’s grave　祖父の墓参りをする
hold a Buddhist ceremony for one’s ancestors　法事をする

Level 1
下記のような夏に関する表現を練習しましょう。
cicadas　せみ

下記のような話もします。

そしてお盆に関しては…
go back to my hometown　帰省する(ふるさとに帰る)

Level 2
Level2もLevel1と似ていますが、”fond of…が好きで”を使っていきます。

下記のように好きな事、嫌いな事について話します。
Are you fond of cicadas?　せみは好きですか。
No, I’m not at all fond of them.　いいえ、まったく好きではありません。

子供の頃の夏の過ごし方を”used to”を使って話します。
How did you you spend your summers when you were a child?　子供の頃、夏はどのように過ごしましたか。

Level 3

以前彼と夜の天神?中洲?辺りをぶらぶら歩いていたら、
「この夜景良いよねッ！日本の夜はいつも明るいね。これが日本だね！」っと言ってました。

私にとって当たり前の景色が、外国人にとっては新鮮なんですねッ！

ゆっくりのんびりした時間も好きですが、やっぱり私は活気のある日本が大好きだなッ！

この写真はドイツの景色です。空気が澄んでてキレイですね。何にもないですが…（笑）

ビジネス英語 – I need it yesterday

Hi folks, I’d like to show you a kind of quirky expression we use to say we are in a hurry/ can’t wait long for something to be done.

“I need it yesterday.”

This is a bit of an informal expression and is probably best used by people of equal status in a company or from boss to staff member but not the other way around because it is fairly demanding.

Here is an example.
“ Have you finished the report I asked you for?”
“No, not quite.”
“Well, hurry up, I need it yesterday!”

As you can see, it isn’t the most polite way to ask for something so please be careful who you use it on.
