How to study English – Learn synonyms

Hello again,my advice for today is to start leaning synonyms.

This is advice for those of you that have already mastered the basics though and are trying to move up a level, please don’t  do this when you are just starting out. I have noticed that a lot of my students always use the same adjective for everything, the most common one being delicious when describing a meal.

You have probably heard Tim and I say that we almost never use the word delicious and if you Google delicious synonym, you will find a load of words like, tasty, mouth watering, scrumptious and so on there. So, I recommend finding some synonyms to increase your vocabulary a bit and give your English some spice.

One thing to keep in mind though is that there are an awful lot of words in the English language so you may come across a lot of synonyms for one word, if you are unsure of which are natural or used most commonly, feel free to ask any of the teachers at the school.

こんにちは！今日の私のアドバイスは同義語を学ぼうということです。

みなさんすでに基本的な部分はマスターしているのですが、レベルアップしましょう。勉強を始めたばかりの方はしないでほしいのですが、生徒さんの多くは、何に対してもいつも同じ形容詞を使ってしまっています。例えば一番共通して多いのが、食事について述べる際に使う、deliciousという単語です。

恐らくTimや私から聞いたことはあると思いますが、私たちはdeliciousという言葉は普段ほとんど使いません。もし、グーグルでdeliciousの同義語を調べたら、 tasty, mouth watering, scrumptious などが出てくるでしょう。このように、私はある単語の同義語を調べることがあなたの語彙力を向上させ、あなたの英語にスパイスを与えてくれると思いますので、おすすめします。

ひとつ覚えておいてほしいのですが、英語はものすごい数の単語があるので、かなり多くの同義語が見つかると思います。どれが自然に使う言葉で、どれが一般的なのかわからないときは、遠慮なく講師に聞いてくださいね。

Travel Englishー travelling by train

Hi there everyone, here are a few useful phrases you can use when travelling by train in a English speaking country, hope they come in useful one day.

 

I’d like a first class ticket to Cambridge please.

Single or return?

That’s eighteen pounds fifty please.

When are you traveling?

Leaving tomorrow morning and coming back on the afternoon of the 15th please.

Would the 9:05 from here tomorrow and the 15:10 from Cambridge on the 15th be okay?

How long will it take to get there?

The train arrives in Cambridge at ten o’clock so it’s a fifty-five minute journey.

Which platform do I need?

It leaves from platform 7.

Is the train express, or does it stop at every station?

Hi there everyone, today I will show you a word that we use in British English but I have never really heard Americans use and that is “gutted”.

It means highly disappointed and this fits in quite nicely with our weekend topics in Akasaka and Ropponmatsu because we tend to use it when we are talking about having bad luck.

For example

I was gutted after Scotland lost 4-1 to England at the football.

My friend was gutted after she failed her driving test for the 4th time.
