Business English – The elephant in the room.
“The elephant in the room.”
This week we are talking about home and neighbourhood, so here is a common expression that is often used in (and out of) business. But be careful, we are not really talking about a room!! We use it to talk about a really obvious problem that exists, but nobody is talking about. Can you imagine there was a big, grey elephant in your living room as you sit and watch TV, but nobody in your family is talking about it?! It’s a really big problem but maybe no one wants to deal with it. So of course, when we use this expression there is no “elephant” and no “room” – it’s just a way of saying there is a “big problem” that everyone is ignoring!
Here’s an example:
“The fact that his 35-year old brother was still living with his parents was a big elephant in the room at every family reunion.”
Here, this is a big problem and a little strange, but nobody wants to talk about it during the reunion. In this case, maybe it’s a little embarrassing for the brother, so everyone is being polite and just talking about other topics. It’s quite a common phrase, and a good one to know, for everyday use and in the business world too.

“The elephant in the room.”＝「部屋に象」
今週は我が家とご近所について話しているので、一般的な表現でビジネスで（以外でも）よく使われているものを紹介します。でも、気を付けてください。本当に部屋について話しているわけではないんです！
この表現は、とても明確に存在する問題なのに誰もそれについて話さないこと、についてあらわす時に使います。想像してみてください。あなたが座ってテレビを見ている家のリビングに大きな灰色の象がいて、なのに家族の誰もそのことについて話さないなんてことを！？？すごく大きな問題ではあれるけれど、きっとだれも対応したくないのですね。
ということで、もちろん、私たちがこの表現を使う時には、「象」も「部屋」も本当にはありません。「大きな問題」があるのに、誰もが知らないふりをしている状態について言う一つの方法というだけです。
ひとつ例があります：
「彼の35歳の兄弟がまだ両親と一緒に住んでいるということは、毎回の親類の集まりでもだれも触れない問題だった。」
大きな問題で少し奇妙ではあるが、集まりでは誰もそのことに触れたがらない、ということです。この場合、それが兄弟にとってちょっと恥ずかしいことなので、皆が気をつかって他のことについて話している、という感じです。これは本当によく使われる表現なので、日常生活の中でも、ビジネスシーンでも使える、知っておくにはよい表現です。
