Hello everyone, can you believe it’s already mid February? I have started dreaming about the warm rays of the spring sun. How about you?
At Kensington Eikaiwa, we’re making constant effort to help you, our students improve your English and achieve your study objectives. Lately, teachers are recording some of their lessons and have other teachers evaluate them ( check the good and bad points about them). The purpose of this exercise obviously, is to improve the quality of our lessons. I’m learning a lot from other teachers and I’m sure my lessons will be better.

A ‘commercialised’ holiday.

Hey guys, here is a new verb for describing many mainstream holidays nowadays: ‘commercialise’. It means to exploit something for profit. Valentines Day originally had nothing to do with love, and it was never a traditional holiday in terms of buying things until it was heavily commercialised by big retailers. 

‘Commercialise’ isn’t just for holidays, you can use it anywhere it makes sense. Here is another example.

“People are loving this new character in our movie”

“They sure are, let’s talk to marketing and start getting this thing commercialised.”

やあ皆さん。多くの人気の祝日を表現する最近良く聞く新しい動詞がこれです。
‘commercialised’
これは、利益を得るために何かを利用する事を意味します。

本来、バレンタインデーは愛があれば、やらなくてはいけないことなど何も無かったのです。そして大企業がひどく商業化するまでは、祝日やお祝いイベントに物を買うような習慣は決してなかったのです。

この表現は、祝日にだけ向けた言葉ではありません。どこにいてもあなたはこの表現を使うことができるでしょう。
別の例を挙げてみます。

“People are loving this new character in our movie”
（人々は私達の映画に出てくる、この新しいキャラクターを好きになるでしょうね）

“They sure are, let’s talk to marketing and start getting this thing commercialised.”
（その通りですね。マーケティングについて話して、商品化を進めましょう。）

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Full sentences

Hey guys,

Something that can be a struggle for students, especially beginners, can be making full sentences. Here is an example:

Liam: “What did you do yesterday?”
Student: “I went to the cinema”
Liam: “Who did you go with?”
Student: “My daughter.”

This is actually an ok and fairly common thing to do. Like with Japanese, we can omit things that are obvious. But we encourage students to try and use full sentences when learning, as it is better for learning the language. Of course, it’s not a problem to do sometimes, but if you notice it becoming a habit, it’s a good thing to try and snap out of. 

A simple tip is to remember to start with the subject, followed by the verb. Here is the same example again:

Liam: “What did you do yesterday?”
Student: “I went to the cinema”
Liam: “Who did you go with?”
Student: “I went with my daughter.”

こんにちは

皆さんを、特に初心者の方を苦戦させる事として、省略せずに文章を作ることがあります。

例えば
Liam: “What did you do yesterday?”
（昨日何をしていましたか？）

Student: “I went to the cinema”
（映画に行きました。）

Liam: “Who did you go with?”
（誰と一緒に行きましたか？）

Student: “My daughter.”
（娘です）

実際にはこれでも大丈夫ですし、かなりよくあることです。
日本人同士なら、文の一部を省略しても意味が通じます。
しかし、学習中の生徒さんがより良く言語を学ぶためには、省略せずに文章を作ることをおススメします。
もちろん時々は問題ありません、でももし、それが癖になってしまっていると気づいたら、そこから切り替えてみるのはとても良いことです。

簡単なヒントとして、「最初に主語、その後に動詞を続ける」と覚えて下さい。
先ほどの例をもう一度。

Liam: “What did you do yesterday?”
（昨日何をしていましたか？）

Student: “I went to the cinema”
（映画に行きました。）

Liam: “Who did you go with?”
（誰と一緒に行きましたか？）

Student: “I went with my daughter.”
（娘と一緒に行きました。）

Be my valentine

Hey guys, 

‘Will you be my valentine?’ This special holiday has a special way to ask someone out for a date: ‘Will you be my Valentine?’. It’s kind of an older thing to say though, so if you ever want to ask someone out on a date in English, it’s best to say something like: ‘Would you like to go for a drink sometime?’ or ‘Can I take you out for dinner this weekend?’.

ビジネス英会話 – “Face the music.”の意外な意味は？！

“Face the music.”

“Face the music.”
We can use this expression in daily English, but it’s also quite common in business. We say this when we have to accept unpleasant consequences or an unpleasant reality. 

“We are upset about losing this important client. It’s a very big client to lose but it’s time for us to face the music and move on. If we work hard we can attract many other big clients and still have a great year.”

In the above example, it’s time for this company to accept that they lost the client. It’s in the past now and there is no way to change the client’s mind. The employees have to just deal with this reality, and now start to focus on the future.

We also use this expression in our personal lives. For example, when I was younger I thought about being a professional football player. However, I slowly realized I wasn’t fast enough to become a professional athlete! I had to face the music and accept that professional sports wasn’t for me.

“Face the music.”　（招いた結果を潔く受け止める）
これは日常でも使いますが、ビジネスシーンで使われることが多い表現で、喜こばしくない結果や現実に直面した時に言います。

「我々はこの重要な顧客を失うことに動揺している。とても大口の顧客を失うんだ、でも、もうこれを受け止め、動き出さなければいけない時がきた。我々はまだ、一生懸命働いて他の大口の顧客を魅了して素晴らしい年にすることができるはずだよ。」

上の例は、その会社は顧客を失った事実を受け入れる時であることを表しています。それはもう過去のことで、顧客の考えは変えられないのです。従業員たちはただこの現実に対応し、前を向き始めるべきなのです。

この表現は個人の生活上でも使われます。例えばは若い時、プロのサッカー選手になるんだと思っていました。でも、プロのアスリートになるにはもう遅いんだと少しずつ気が付きました！私は自分がプロのスポーツ選手には慣れないことを潔く受け入れなければいけませんでした。

singing in the shower

This week’s topic is “Music” – so I thought I’d share a music related study tip. Many students feel they can’t practice speaking with the flashcards as much as they’d like to before class – because they don’t have a speaking partner at home. Well, with a little imagination I think you do have the perfect speaking partner – yourself! It’s a great idea to make role plays before class and to play both roles of the speakers in the role play. Essentially, you are having a conversation with yourself – both asking and answering the questions. 

If you want to make your conversations a little more interesting, you don’t need to just speak your role plays – you can sing them! I have a friend who does this when learning Japanese – in the shower every day! She says it’s a great way to build up her fluency – she doesn’t care if it’s 100% accurate – she just keeps singing! There is nobody there to judge her, so she says she can just relax and add new words to her favourite tunes. 

Why not give it a go, singing in the shower – in English!

今週のトピックは「音楽」、そこで私は、音楽と学習の繋がりについてシェアしたいと思います。生徒さんの多くは、レッスンの前にフラッシュカードを使ってやりたいできるだけたくさんスピーキングの練習ができないと感じている、なぜなら家にはスピーキングの相手がいないからです。でも、少し想像を働かせてみて下さい、私はあなたは完璧なスピーキングのパートナーを持てると思います、それは、あなた自身です！

レッスンの前に２人のスピーカー、どちらの役割も練習しておくことは素晴らしい考えです。自分自身に質問をし、答える。両方を行うことで自分と会話をするのです。

もし自分自身と会話をすることにもう少し興味があるのなら、ロールプレイで話すだけにとどめておく必要はありません、歌うことができるのです！毎日シャワーを浴びながら歌って日本語を勉強している友人がいますが、これは流暢に話せるようになるために素晴らしい方法だと言っていました。100%正確かどうかは気にせずに、ただ歌うだけ！そこには審査員はいません、だから彼女はリラックスして好きな曲に新しい単語を足すことができるのです。

試しにシャワーの中で歌ってみましょう、英語でね！

Do you know the name of the most famous Scottish musical instrument?! I’ll give you a clue, it has a bag and some pipes! Yes, that’s right it’s called the “bagpipes”! Students often ask me if I can play the bagpipes. My answer is always the same: “No way, it’s really difficult!” Actually, not many people in Scotland can play the bagpipes – it’s not so common to learn. You need to practice a lot and they are very noisy, so it’s difficult to play them at home. If you do, your neighbours won’t like you for sure! Also, to play the bagpipes you need powerful lungs. It takes a lot of energy to blow into the pipes to play a full song, so it’s very tiring.

People often ask me if I like the sound of bagpipes. Well, I think it depends on the time and the place. I used to work on Edinburgh’s main street, with lots of tourists, and so I had to listen to a bagpiper playing the same songs (really loudly!) every day – it was awful!! However, we usually listen to bagpipe music when we go to an end of year party and do Scottish dancing. Here, I love listening to bagpipe music – it has lots of energy and is great to dance to! And it makes me a little proud to be Scottish too!

If you want an idea of Scottish dancing and bagpipe music, check out the dance called “The Eightsome Reel” on Youtube, it’s one of the most famous ones.

スコットランドで最も有名な楽器の名前を知っていますか？ヒントをあげましょう、その楽器にははバッグと数本のパイプがあります。そうです、正解は「バグパイプ」です！良く生徒さんに私がバグパイプを演奏できるか聞かれます。私の答えはいつも同じです。「まさか！あれはとっても難しいんですよ！」

実際、スコットランドでもバグパイプを演奏できる人は多くなく、演奏方法を学ぶことはあまり一般的ではありません。すごくたくさんの練習が必要ですし、とてもうるさいので、家で演奏するのは難しいのです。もしあなたがそんなことをしたら、近所の人は絶対に嫌がるでしょうね！それにバグパイプを演奏するにはパワフルな肺が必要です。1曲演奏するためにパイプに息を吹き込むにはたくさんのエネルギーを使うのでものすごく疲れるのです。

バグパイプの音色は好きですか？ともよく聞かれます。えぇと、時と場所によりますね。私はたくさんの観光客がいるエディンバラのメインストリートで働いていたので、毎日バグパイプの演奏者が同じ曲を（すごく大きい音量で！）演奏するのを聴かなければならず、それはひどかった！

でも、1年の終わりにパーティーに行くといつも、スコットランド舞踊とともにバグパイプの演奏を聴きます。そこでその演奏を聴くのは大好きです。とてもエネルギーに満ち溢れていて、ダンスにもぴったりです！そして、スコットランド人であることを少し誇らしく感じさせてくれるのです。
