Hi there everyone,

As you saw in my last post, the topic for this weekend at our schools around Fukuoka is about British pubs and this is an essential phrase you must learn if you are to survive British pub culture. 

a round ( short for a round of drinks)
We use this to talk about an order of drinks for more than one person and when we drink in the UK we usually order our drinks this way.  A typical conversation would go like this. ..

Jaimie “Whose round is it? “

Tim “Mine, I think. What does everyone want? 

Jaimie. “A pint of IPA please mate. “

Yuki “A glass of white wine for me please.”

Ross: “And a half of shandy please.”

Tim “Okay, back in a sec.”

前回の私のブログでご覧になられた通り、福岡にある私達のスクールの今週末のトピックはイギリスのパブについて、です。

もしあなたがイギリスのパブ文化の中で何とかやって行きたいなら、これは絶対に学ばないといけない必須フレーズです。

a round ( a round of drinksの略 – 順番に、人数分の飲み物をまとめて買いに行くこと)

UKのパブでドリンクを頼む時、二人以上なら通常はこのフレーズを使ってオーダーをします。典型的な会話はこんな感じです…

Jaimie : “Whose round is it? “
（誰が買いに行く番？）

Tim : “Mine, I think. What does everyone want?
（私の番だと思う、みんな何が欲しい？）

Jaimie. : “A pint of IPA please mate. “
（ IPAをパイントでお願いするよ）

Yuki : “A glass of white wine for me please.”
（白ワインをグラスでお願いします）

Ross : “And a half of shandy please.”
（それと、シャンディガフをハーフパイントで ）

Tim :  “Okay, back in a sec.”
( OK, すぐ戻ります）

This week’s subject
British Pubs

Hi there everyone,

The topic for this weekend’s classes in our schools in Akasaka, Yakuin, and Nishijin is “British Pubs”.
I’m really looking forward to teaching this class because finally we have a subject  which I can say I’m an authority on. 

We will be talking about pubs, British food, drinks, and what people do when they go to the pub, learning how to order food, and more importantly drink, in a pub, and making small talk with people in the pub. 

Sounds like a fun class to me!

ビジネス英会話 – turbulent times「激動のとき」

turbulent times

Hi everyone,

Do you know how sometimes when you are flying and the airplane starts shaking? That’s called turbulence. It’s kind of scary (very scary for some people!) and  it’s a noun.

The adjective is “turbulent” and it means not stable or calm. In Japan, I have experienced two turbulent times, one in 2008 & 2009 after the Lehman shock when many people lost their jobs and since last year because of the pandemic.

I hope that these turbulent times will be over soon and we’ll return to more stable times!

皆さんこんにちは

時々、搭乗中に飛行機が揺れ始めることがあるのをご存知ですか？
それは ”turbulence（乱気流）”と呼ばれていて、名詞です。ちょっと怖い（数人の方にはとても怖い）ものです。

形容詞は ” turbulent ”、安定していない/穏やかではないという意味です。
私は日本で2回の「turbulent times（激動の時代）」を経験しました。
1つは2008年と2009年、リーマンショック後、多くの人々が仕事を失った時。そして2回目は昨年から、コロナにの影響によるものです。

これらの激動のときが早く過ぎ去り、安定した日々が戻って来ることを祈っています。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Study together with a friend

A great way to enjoy learning even more is doing it with a friend or another family member, that way you can get more speaking and practice time between the lessons.

For our group students introducing a friend to our classes is a great way to enjoy learning even more but also for our private students, having a friend in Kensington (even on a different course) is a great way to get more speaking reps.

If you do introduce one of your friends to Kensington, we’ll make sure to discount the entrance fee a bit to make it easier for them to join up!

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Easter in my Country

Hi everyone,

April 3rd was Easter for most of the world but not for my country, in my country the easter day is always different. I’m not so sure why but then again I never checked. This year the Greek Easter is on Sunday, May 2nd.

Easter used to be my favourite time of the year (together with summer of course) and the reason for that was partly the weather which is amazing in Greece at that time of the year and also the way that we celebrate it. 

On Easter day, my dad and my older brother would wake up early in the morning and make a fire, and once the fire was ready they would spitfire a whole lamb on it. They would start drinking and having a good time from early in the morning (7:00am was really early for me when I was younger) and by the time I would wake up (about 11:00 or 12:00) the lamb was almost ready to eat. 

Food was delicious, but most importantly the memories we made were precious.
If you ever travel in Greece this time of year, please try to celebrate Greek Easter too!

私の出身国のイースター

やぁ皆さん

私の国を除き、世界中の殆どの国では、4月3日がイースターでした。
私の国ではいつもイースターの日が他の国々と違います、なぜなのかはよくわかりませんし、調べたこともありませんが。
ギリシャの今年のイースターは5月2日の日曜日です。

イースターは私が1年で最も好きな時間でした（夏と一緒です、もちろん）。
1年のうちでも、その時期のギリシャの気候は素晴らしいですし、お祝いの仕方なども理由のひとつです。

イースターの日、父と兄は早起きして火をおこします。火の準備ができたら、羊を一頭丸ごと火の中へ。
彼らは朝早く（7時は若い頃の私には早朝でした）から飲み始め、良い時間を過ごしていました。
私が起きる（11:00か12：00位）頃までには羊は大体食べる準備ができていました。

食べ物は美味しかったです、でも私にとって最も重要なの私たちが作った思い出で、それはとても貴重なものです。
もしあなたがこの時期にギリシャに旅行に行くことがあれば、ギリシャのイースターも楽しんでみて下さい。

Hi all,

I was reminded of a really nice expression while watching Liam teach the other day. It’s “have a lie-in” and it means resting by staying in bed later than usual in the morning. I loved having lie-ins when I was younger but not so much nowadays as there are a lot of things to do and little time to accomplish them. 

How about you guys? Do you enjoy having a lie-in on your days off?

やあ皆さん
先日リアム講師のレッスンを観ている時に、とても良い表現を思い出しました。
“have a lie-in”
朝、いつもより遅くまでベッドの中で休んでいる、という意味です。

若い頃はいつもより遅くまでベッドの中で寝ている事が大好きでした、でも最近はそうでもありません。
やらなければいけない事が沢山あり、達成するには時間が足りないのです。

皆さんはどうですか？
休日の朝、ベッドでいつもよりゆっくりして楽しんでいますか？

At the Department Store

Hi everyone, 

This week in our group classes we’ll be going to the department store and practice some very useful grammar plus also some language that we can use when travelling!

Some of the targets of our classes will be:

  • Use the correct prepositions (on/in) and ordinals to talk about floors of a building.
  • Correctly use pronouns with: 
    • countable nouns (them), uncountable nouns (it), singular nouns (one).
  • Ask and answer “Is there a/an …?” questions.

In our intermediate classes will also 

  • Use simple indirect questions (do you know / could you tell me / can you tell me)
  • Ask “Does this store have a/an …?” questions and answer with basic directions.

And of course as always in our advanced classes we’ll be asking and answering some more open-ended questions to expand further on our topic.

デパートで使う便利な表現を学ぼう

やぁ皆さん。

今週のグループレッスンでは、デパートで使えるいくつかのとても便利な文法と、旅行でも使える表現の練習をします。

レッスンでの目標をいくつかご紹介します。

・Use the correct prepositions (on/in) and ordinals to talk about floors of a building.
　正しい前置詞（on/in）の使い方と建物の階について

・Correctly use pronouns with: countable nouns (them), uncountable nouns (it), singular nouns (one).
    数えられる名詞（them）と、数えられない名詞（It）、単数名詞（One）について正しく発音する

・Ask and answer “Is there a/an …?” questions.
　そこには～がありますか？と質問する

 

中級クラスでは上記に加えて以下を行います。

・Use simple indirect questions (do you know / could you tell me / can you tell me)
    シンプルな間接疑問文を使う(do you know / could you tell me / can you tell me等)

・Ask “Does this store have a/an …?” questions and answer with basic directions
  「この店に～はありますか？」基本的な方向を表す表現を使って、質問しと答える。


もちろん通常通り、上級クラスでは更に幅広くトピックについてのオープン/クローズの質疑応答を行います。

ケンジントンでのできごと- さようならロス、こんにちは新しい仲間たち！

What we are doing in Kensington
Saying goodbye to Ross / Saying hello to our new team members

Hello everyone,

As in many other companies, spring is the season for hiring new staff and also saying goodbye to some beloved staff. 

This spring we have welcomed 7 new members to our school. 5 of them will be working almost entirely in our kids team and 2 of them in our adult team.

In regards to our adult team, please welcome Luke and Denny to our school. Luke has started teaching some classes in Kensington since February and will be mostly teaching in the Yakuin school for now and Denny will be replacing Ross and teaching adults in all our schools around Fukuoka city. 

This Sunday we said goodbye to Ross, Ross was a respected and beloved member of our school so we’ll miss him dearly,  but life goes on, we are super excited about what our team will accomplish this year and super excited to share it with you!

ケンジントンでのできごと
さようならロス、こんにちは新しい仲間たち！

皆さんこんにちは。

多くの企業と同様に、春は新しいスタッフを迎える季節であり、大好きなスタッフにさよならを言う季節でもあります。

この春、私たちのスクールは7名の新しい仲間を迎えました。5人はその殆どをキッズスクールで、2人は大人のスクールで働くことになります。

大人チームでは、どうぞルーク講師とデニー講師をあたたかく迎えて下さい。
ルーク講師は2月からケンジントンでいくつかのレッスンをスタートしていて、今のところはほぼ薬院校でのレッスンです。
デニー講師はロス講師の代わりとなって、福岡中の私達の教室でレッスンを行います。

先週の日曜、私たちはロス講師に別れを告げました。彼はは私たちメンバーからリスペクトされ愛されていたので、私たちは心から恋しくなると思います。
でも、人生は進んで行くものです。
私たちは今年成し遂げるであろうことや、それを皆さんにシェアすることについて、とてもワクワクしています！

Hello there,

This is a phrase that we use when we want to start a discussion on a topic or start a meeting. It is actually something Tim and I say to each other quite a bit because we tend to chat about random things that have nothing to do with the matter at hand when meeting on Zoom.

Jaimie: “Last night  was great, we drank about 6 shots of Jameson and 5 pints each, you should have been there!”

Tim: “Sounds fun. Anyway, enough of this! Let’s get down to business. “

これは、議題についてディスカッションを始める時や、会議をスタートする時に使う表現です。
実際に、私とTimはお互いにかなりこのフレーズを使っています。
なぜなら私たちは、Zoomミーティングの時に、目の前の議題とは関係ないことを手あたり次第にに喋る傾向があるからです。

Jaimie: “Last night  was great, we drank about 6 shots of Jameson and 5 pints each, you should have been there!”
（昨晩は素晴らしかった、ジェイムソンをショットで6杯、ビールを5パイント位飲んだんだよ、君も来たらよかったのに。）

Tim: “Sounds fun. Anyway, enough of this! Let’s get down to business. “
（それは楽しそうだね。とにかく、この話しはもういいね！さぁ、本題に入ろう。）
