 a trip down memory lane

As we are going to be talking about memories this week in Kensington, it’s a good chance to introduce a nice idiom we use when we talk about the past. It’s a trip down memory lane and we use it whenever we are talking, writing, or thinking about something that happened to them a long time ago.

Ex. I took a trip down memory lane last weekend when I met one of my oldest friends and we talked about our wild times in university!

ずっと昔に起こった事について話したり、書いたり、考えたりする時はいつでもこの表現を使う事ができます。

I took a trip down memory lane last weekend when I met one of my oldest friends and we talked about our wild times in university!
（先週古い友人と会って昔の事を懐かしく思い出し、大学生の頃の楽しかった時間について話しました。）

What we are doing in Kensington
Preparing for Summer School

Hey all,

This summer we are going to organise our first summer school at our kids school, it’s going to be held from July 26th to August 6th and it promises to be a lot of fun!

The Kensington Kids Academy summer school is going to be exclusive to K3 students (年長）and is only for advanced students looking to enter one of immersion courses for elementary students around Fukuoka city. There will be a maximum of 12 students in the school and students will be encouraged to use English in a natural way and environment while playing with their classmates.

We also have some short trips to the Fukuoka zoo, the Fukuoka botanical gardens, nearby parks and also hopefully to the fire station.

サマースクールの準備中

やぁ皆さん

今年の夏、ケンジントン英会話のキッズスクールでは、初のサマースクールを開催する予定です。日時は7月26日から8月6日まで、絶対に楽しくなるとお約束します！

ケンジントンキッズアカデミーのサマースクールでは、K3(年長さん)と、福岡市近郊の小学校のイマ―ジョン教育コースへのご入学を希望されている十分な基礎英語力をお持ちの生徒さん限定で行う予定です。生徒さんは最大で12名で、クラスメイトと一緒に遊びながら自然な方法と環境で英語を使える様にします。
そして、福岡市動物園、福岡市植物園、近くの公園、できれば消防署への遠足も行います。

Hello there everyone,

This is a phrase that I actually hate! I started hearing it using it about 10 years ago or so and to be honest to me it doesn’t make much sense since we really can’t go back in time anyway but that is just me! I hear it being used more and more and we have to move with the times so here it is.

“going forward”
This just means from now on.

Boss “Jaimie, going forward, I’d like you to pay a little more attention to detail, I’ve noticed you sometimes slip up when it comes to numbers.”

Jaimie “Sure, that is something, I’ll definitely work on from now on.”

”going forward”
実はこれは、私が本当に嫌いなフレーズです！
10年ほど前から使われ耳にするようになったのですが、正直なところ私からしたら、これはあまり意味が通らないと思っています。ともかく私達は絶対に過去に戻ることはできず、こう思うのは私だけでしょう！
このフレーズは、ますます良く聞くようになっていますし、私達は時代の流れに乗らなければいけないので、ここにで紹介します。

“going forward ”
これは、「今後」という意味です。

Boss “Jaimie, going forward, I’d like you to pay a little more attention to detail, I’ve noticed you sometimes slip up when it comes to numbers.”
（ジェイミー、今後はもう少し細かい点にまで気を付けてくれよ。数字に関して、時々間違えているよ。）

Jaimie “Sure, that is something, I’ll definitely work on from now on.”
（わかりました、これから必ず気を付けて頑張ります。）

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
 Use as Much English as Possible

Hello there everyone,

This may seem like quite strange advice but when I watch our training videos I often think that students miss opportunities to use English in class. Kensington classes are designed to keep our students speaking but I think people still tend to use Japanese fillers,　えええ、すごい、確かに etc. Here you are missing out on a good opportunity to speak English. We have a class coming up in the future called “Showing Interest” where we will practice how to use English filler words, but if you catch yourself speaking Japanese in the class from time to time please feel free to ask the teacher how to say what you want in English. 

えええ！　No way! Really?! I can’t believe it! Whaaaat? and lots more.
すごい！　Wow! That’s amazing! That’s great! Cool! and lots more
確かに!　　True true.  That’s true. You’re right.  and lots more. 

Hope that comes in handy and please keep an eye on your fillers and don’t be afraid to ask.

できるだけ英語を使おう

やあ皆さん、こんにちは。

これはとても奇妙なアドバイスに見えるかもしれません、でも私達のトレーニングビデオを見ている時に、生徒さん達はレッスン中、英語を使う機会を逃している事がある、とよく思うのです。

ケンジントンのレッスン中は、生徒が話し続けられるように設計されていますが、やはりまだ、「えええ、すごい、確かに 」等の日本語のつなぎ言葉を使ってしまう傾向があるように思います。
こんな時あなたは英語で話す良い機会を逃してしまっているのです。”Showing Interest”と言う今後のレッスンでは、英語のつなぎ言葉の使い方を練習します。でももしあなたが、レッスン中に自分が時々日本語を話してしまっている事に気づいたなら、言いたい事を英語でどうやって言うのかを、気軽に質問して下さい。

えええ！…　No way! Really?! I can’t believe it! Whaaaat? and lots more.
すごい！…　Wow! That’s amazing! That’s great! Cool! and lots more
確かに ! …　True true.  That’s true. You’re right.  and lots more.

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
 My Other Birthday

Hello there everyone, did you know that the Queen of England has 2 birthdays? Her real one in April and the one that is celebrated by the public in June. 

The queen and I share many similarities and that is just one of them. It sounds a bit strange but I kind of think of June 26th as a second birthday because that is the day that I came to Japan and I’ve done a lot of growing up since I came here. I was only 24 at the time and this year it’s my 18th birthday!

I got married here, started my business here, learned a second language here, both my kids were born here, and I spent the entirety of my thirties here without going home once so it makes me feel like I’ve done most of the important things in my life in Japan.  

That being said and as much as I do enjoy living here, I have always thought of it as being temporary.  My family are all spread out across the world, mum in France, cousins around Europe, and me in Japan but I just feel that one day it will be the right time to go home. Who knows though, that day may never come. 

P.S My real birthday is September 7th. I like beer.

私のもうひとつの誕生日

皆さんこんにちは。

実はイギリス女王には誕生日が2回ある事をご存知でしたか？彼女の実際の誕生日は4月、そしてもう1回は6月に公式に、お祝いされるのです。

女王と私には沢山の共通点があり、これはそのうちの1つです。
すごく変に聞こえるかもしれませんね。
でも私は、6月26日は私の2つ目の誕生日だと思っています。なぜならこの日は私は日本にやって来た日であり、私はここに来てから沢山成長したからです。
当時まだ24歳だった私は、今年18回目の誕生日を迎えました！

私はここで結婚し、ビジネスを始め、第2言語を学び、2人の子供達もここで生まれました。私は30代は1回も母国の家に帰らずに、ずっとここで過ごしました。私の人生のとても重要な出来事の殆どは、日本で起こったのです。

そうは言っても、私はここでの生活を楽しんではいますが、常に一時的なものとして考えています。 私の家族は世界中に散らばっていて、母はフランス、いとこはヨーロッパ各地、そして私は日本にいますが、いつの日か故郷に帰るべき時が来ると思っています。
でも、そんな日は来ないかもしれません。これは誰にも分からないことです。

P.S ちなみに私の本当の誕生日は9月7日で、好きなものはビールです！

It’s on the house

Hi there, 

Since we are talking about home and neighbourhood this weekend and we have also discussed British Pubs in the past, let’s talk about this English phrase today. 

“on the house”

If you are a regular customer at a bar in Britain and you get to know the staff well they will occasionally treat you to a free drink. When the bar staff give you your drink (hopefully a pint) and they say it’s “on the house” this means you don’t have to pay for it! 

It may seem strange to you that the phrase is on the house but the word pub is an abbreviation of public house.

“on the house 　お店からのサービス”

もしあなたがイギリスのバーの顧客でスタッフと親しくなったなら、彼らはたまに無料で飲み物をくれるでしょう。バーのスタッフが飲み物をくれる時（願わくば1パイントで）、彼らは”on the house”と言い、この分は支払わなくていいですよ、という意味です！

on the houseというフレーズは奇妙に見えるかもしれませんが、実は、”pub”という単語は、” public hous” の略なのです。

What we are doing in Kensington
Sprucing up the Classrooms

Hello there everyone,

I’m sad to say that we had to close the Meinohama school last week, it made a promising start but the timing was bad and unfortunately the school wasn’t established enough to survive 2020 due to the coronavirus. 

Still, there is a plus side to everything and I have shamelessly stolen all the nice tables and furniture from there and used them to make the Nishijin school a lot more inviting and will be slowly working on improving the Ropponmatsu school over the next week or two. Here is a picture of the freshly decorated Nishijin classroom.(use picture in folder please and then delete this) I have to admit this is the first time I’ve ever been excited about furniture!!

皆さんこんにちは

残念なお知らせがあります。
先週をもって、姪浜校をクローズ致しました。
姪浜校はとても良いスタートを切る事ができていましたが、タイミングが悪く2020年のコロナウイルスの影響により、残念ながら存続するのに十分な生徒さんの確保ができなくなってしまいました。

しかし、何事にもプラスの面はある物で、私は厚かましくも、姪浜校から素敵なテーブルや家具をかっぱらって来ました。1週間から2週間かけて、西新校をより魅力的にし、六本松校を少しずつより良くするために使います。
こちらは飾りたての西新教室の写真です。
私は家具について初めてワクワクした事を認めなければいけません！

Sick day and sick leave

If you’re ever sick, and in need of time off to recover, then in English-speaking countries you’ll probably use one of two expressions when talking to your boss. Here are some examples:

“I’m going to take a sick day”

“Last month I had some sick leave”

Now these are basically the same except for one important difference. ‘Sick day’ is, of course, just one day. Although you could also use ‘sick days’ to talk about more than one day. ‘Sick leave’ is an extended period of time, so it’s usually used for more serious things that require a longer period of time off.

もしあなたが病気になって回復するまでに時間が必要なら、英語を話す国々では上司と話す時、これらの2つのフレーズを使うでしょう。
例をいくつか挙げてみます。

“I’m going to take a sick day”
(病気休暇を取る予定です。）

“Last month I had some sick leave”
(先月、病気休暇を数日取りました。)

これらは、1つの重要な違いを除けば、基本的には同じ意味です。
‘Sick day’はもちろん、1日だけです。2日間以上について話すなら‘sick days’と言うこともできます。
‘Sick leave’は通常、長期間、つまり更に長い期間の休暇を必要とするより深刻な状況に対して使われます。
