“Low Hanging Fruit”

Today’s business English refers to the phrase “low hanging fruit”.
This is usually used in corporate work, but basically what it means is something is easy to do. Fruit that is hanging very low is usually easy to grab from a tree, so it’s “easy”.

This can be meant in a positive and negative way. In the positive sense, it means that the company can take advantage of something easily.

In the negative, people can use it as a way to say something is “too easy” and not good enough. Maybe you should strive for more!

You can use this in everyday English too, if you want!

これは通常.企業の仕事において使われますが、根本的には「簡単にできる」と言う意味を持っています。低い位置になっているフルーツは木から簡単に採る事ができる事から「簡単」と言う意味を表します。
これはポジティブ、ネガティブどちらの意味にも使えます。

ポジティブな場面では、その企業は簡単に利益を出せる事を意味します。
また、ネガティブな場面では、簡単すぎて十分ではない事を言う時に使います。おそらくもっと努力をするべきなのでしょう！

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Learning After Learning

Happy Sunday, Denny here.

Something that I try to emphasize with many students is that we tend to learn things after we have studied them, rather than when we study them.

This is a little confusing so I’ll try to explain.

When we are studying or in class, we are often focusing very hard and struggling to use the things we are learning. This is a good thing, and what it means is that you’re very aware of what you’re doing, so it’s a slow process.

You learn when you sleep and rest, though. For example, have you noticed when you clean the dishes or play a sport you know very well, you can notice yourself doing it, like it’s automatic?

That’s what happens after your brain “integrates” the things you have learned. The study process is always slow and stressful on the mind – but when you sleep and rest, it becomes “automatic” over time, and in the future you suddenly speak without thinking so hard. It’s when we learn new things, we become very aware and struggle. It means you’re taking the information in. Good!

学習に関して、多くの生徒さんに強調して来た事があります。
私達は「勉強している時」よりも、「勉強した後」に習得している傾向があります。

少し分かりづらいので、例を挙げましょう。

勉強している時やレッスン中は、とても集中していたり、学んでいる事を使おうと一生懸命に奮闘している事がよくあります。これはいい事です。どういう事かと言うと、今やっている事をじっくりと認識しようとしているのです。

私達は、眠ったり休んだりしいる時に習得することがあります。
例えばよくご存知だと思いますが、お皿を洗ったり、スポーツをしている時、気づいたら無意識でやっていたことはありませんか？

これは、あなたの脳が学んだことを吸収した後に起こることです。学習のプロセスは常にゆっくりとしていて、精神的なストレスもかかっています。しかしあなたが眠り、休んだ後では、段々と自動的にできる様になり、将来突然頭で難しく考える前に話せる様になったりするのです。
新しいことを学ぶ時はとても苦労しますが、あなたが情報を吸収しているということなのです、良いことですね！

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Pastels

Hey everyone, Denny here.

As many students know, I like art and tend to do a lot of it. Recently, I’ve been taking a bit of a break from bigger projects and am relaxing instead, but I did buy some soft pastels and paper to start painting outside of the digital world.

It’s a lot of fun, and the same rules of colour, composition and light apply in both digital and traditional art. Pastels are super messy but the colours they bring out are really beautiful, and it’s really enjoyable to blend things with your fingers.

It also lets me bring out the style I want, which is very “impressionist”. An impressionist artist is someone like Claude Monet – an amazing French artist that started the “impressionist” movement.

If you’re interested, I’m happy to show you my pastel paintings – though there aren’t many! Show me your work too!

やあ皆さん、デニーです。

多くの生徒さんがご存知だと思いますが、私は芸術が好きで、色々なことをやっています。
最近では大きなプロジェクトが終わって少し休憩中でリラックスしていますが、デジタルの世界から離れて絵を描くためにソフトパステルと紙を買いました。

デジタルでも伝統的な絵画でも、色のルールや、構成、光の使い方は同じで、とても楽しいです。
パステルを使うはとても面倒ですが、その色はとても美しく、自分の指で色を混ぜるのをとても楽しんでいます。

この方法で、私の求めるとても印象的なスタイルになります。
最も印象的なアーティストは、印象派のムーブメントを開始したクロード・モネというフランス人の素晴らしい画家です。

“Fair Enough”

Hey everyone, Denny here.

“Fair Enough” isn’t really UK or US English, but it’s very commonly used in Australia.

“Fair enough” means “that’s fine” or “OK”. It’s kind of strange when you think about it, but the thing about Australian English is that it tends to shorten a lot of words or play with words in a unique way.

Another thing you can learn is “Yeah, nah.” which means “no”, but “nah, yeah” means “yes”.
Don’t worry about that last part though…that’s confusing for a lot of people, unless you live in Australia!

やあ皆さん、デニーです。

“Fair Enough”はイギリスやアメリカではそうでもないですが、オーストラリアでは一般的に良く使われています。

“Fair Enough”は、構いませんよ、やOK(しょうがないね)という意味です。

奇妙だと思うかもしれませんが、オーストラリアの英語では多くの単語が省略されたり、面白い言葉遊びをする傾向があります。
他にもあなたにお教えできるのは、

 “Yeah, nah.”、これは “no”を意味します。でも “nah, yeah” は“yes”.を意味します。

あなたがオーストラリアに住む場合を除き、最後の部分についてはそんなに心配しないで下さい、これには沢山の人が混乱しています！

Books, Films and Video Games

G’day everyone, Denny here.

Some of my student’s know that I like books, films and video games, but they really don’t know just how much I know about games and film, especially.

I actually own over 1000 games, both on my PC and across many consoles (a console is a home system, like a PlayStation). I used to be a freelance journalist for a gaming website, so I got a lot of free games to review and write about.

I can give you detailed information on the history of video games and which ones were super important for the development of 3D graphics, especially. When it comes to films, I can give detailed descriptions on why filmmakers use certain lights, camera angles and things like that to express certain themes.

You can ask me about it any time. I’m big on books too, but not as much as games and film.

皆さんごきげんよう、デニーです。

何人かの生徒さんは私が本や映画、そしてビデオゲーム好きだとご存じですが、特にビデオゲームや映画について私がどのくらい知っているかは知らないでしょう。

実は私は、ＰＣやコンソール(プレイステーションの様な家庭用ゲーム機器)に、1000個以上のゲームを所有しています。かつてはフリーランスでゲームサイトのジャーナリストをしていたので、無料で多くのゲームを入手しレビューを書いていました。

特に、ビデオゲームの歴史や3Dグラフィックの発展にとても重要だった作品の情報などを提供できます。
また映画に関しては、なぜ映画製作者は、あるテーマを表現するために特定の照明やカメラアングルを使うのかについて詳しく説明ができます。

もし興味があればいつでも聞いて下さい。
私は本も大好きですが、ゲームや映画ほどではありません。

What we are doing in Kensington
Homework!

Howdy doody everyone, Denny here.

An idea that has recently sprung up for us at Kensington is the prospect of giving student’s homework.

No, this doesn’t mean a LOT of homework or paperwork, but personalized little tasks for our private students that cater to their needs. We don’t give this out to everyone, but we want to consider your level, how you can improve and what could be helpful as a small task – like a writing task or asking certain questions.

宿題！

みんな元気？デニーです。

最近、ケンジントン英会話では生徒さんに宿題を出そうというアイデアが出ています。

いえいえ、大量だったり、紙の宿題ではありません。
プライベートコースを受講されている生徒さんそれぞれのニーズ応じた少量の課題です。
宿題は全員には出すわけではなく、生徒さんのレベルや、どうやったらより上達するか、役に立つ課題は何か、筆記なのか、特定の質問なのか等をよく考慮ししたいと思っています。

今後が楽しみです…たぶんね！
