What we are doing in Kensington
Preparing for 2022

Hey everyone, Denny here. Hope your day is going well.

With 2021 coming to a close, we’re now beginning to work on goals and other projects for 2022. There are a lot of things in the pipeline in Kensington. I can say for a fact that we’re making sure we’re ready to teach Eiken – ranging from Grade 4 up to Grade 2 – and also polishing our already excellent courses that we usually teach under our curriculum. 

I hope you have a wonderful new year and enjoy learning English, Eiken and many other things with us in 2022. Thanks for all the great moments teaching you!

Hey everyone,

Today’s Business English expression is the “bottom line” and it means the end result of the accounts of the company, how much profit or loss a company has made. As is easy to guess, it’s a very important thing for every company in any sector if any industry.

Ex. How does the minimum salary raise in Fukuoka affect our bottom line?

Ex. The consumption tax increase a while back really hurt our bottom line.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Come prepared to talk a lot about what you did past week

Hey everyone,

This is especially for the lower level students, Level 1s or lower level 2s. For you guys it’s always a good idea to spend some time thinking about what you did last week and trying to expand as much as possible. Many of our students now do that and it’s excellent practice.

Remember that what you did last week doesn’t need to be anything special, it can be a meal you made, a book you read, a TV program you watched etc. Talk as much as you can is always a great idea in our classes.

Tim’s best and worst movies of the year

Hey everyone,

I’m planning to make a longer post about my best experiences of the year together with photos and post it on the Windsor Eikaiwa blog later on (if I have time) but for now this is a shorter version about my best (and worst) movies.

I haven’t watched so many dramas this year, but I’ve watched quite a few films I think, the best of which is probably “Once upon a time in Hollywood” or “Blackkklansman”. They were both incredibly entertaining and I can’t believe how cool Brad Pitt still is at over 50.

The worst film I’ve watched this year is maybe “Tenet”. It’s kind of unfair to say that cause I actually didn’t see much of it, I got really tired and turned it off after about 10 or 15 minutes. I didn’t understand a thing during that time though, so I decided to give up. It’s a shame cause I usually love Christopher Nolan’s movies. His movies are always cerebral and require attention from the viewer but I think maybe he went a little bit too far with Tenet.

皆さんこんにちは。

後ほど時間があれば、今年の最高の経験についての写真付きの長いブログを、ウインザー英会話ブログにアップしようかと計画中ですが、今日のところは、私のベスト＆ワーストの映画について短いバージョンでご紹介します。

今年はそう多くのドラマは観ませんでしたが、映画はかなり観たと思います。
最も良かったのは、「Once upon a time in Hollywood」か「Blackkklansman」だと思います。これらは両方、とてもエンターテイメント性にあふれていて、ブラッドピットはもう50歳を超えてるのにとてもクールでした。

今年観た中で最も良くなかったのは、「Tenet」だと思います。この評価はある意味フェアではないかもしれません。なぜなら、私は実際にはあまり良く観ていないからです。私はとても疲れてしまって、10分か15分でスイッチをオフにしました。この数分間、私はまったく意味がわからなかったので、観るのを止めてしまったのです。私は通常、クリストファー・ノーランの映画が好きなので、残念でした。彼の映画はいつも、視聴者にとって知的で注意力が必要です。しかし「Tenet」に関してはそうでもなかった様に思います。

What does “so far” mean?

Hey everyone,

When my students hear the expression “so far” most of them usually think it has something to do with distance. In fact it doesn’t, it is related to time and it simply means “until now”.

Ex. What is the best restaurant you have been to in Fukuoka so far?
Ex. So far the best English school I worked for in Fukuoka is of course Kensington Eikaiwa.

What we are doing in Kensington
Getting ready to change to Official Line

Hello everyone,

One of the first things we are going to do next year is move all of our communications to an Official Line account. The main reason we are doing this is to make sure we can improve our service to you and also make it easier for you to access certain information.

Important Skills for the Reading Test

Hello everyone, I’m Tim and I’m your Kensington resident Toefl expert. Today I will give you some more information about the TOEFL Reading section. More specifically I’ll let you know the skills important for getting a high score in the reading test.

1．Be able to identify the main ideas being expressed
This means that you can read chunks of text and identify main ideas being expressed. You should be able to make connections between individual sentences and identify the main ideas of the passage.

2．Identify the author’s purpose
When you read a piece of the passage, you should be able to understand why the author has included it. Is it an example, is it a supporting detail for an argument, or perhaps the introduction of a new idea? Understanding the structure of each paragraph and the whole passage is critical to understanding its contents.

3．Scan the text to find specific pieces of information
In order to comprehend the big picture about what’s going on in a passage, you will also need to understand the small pieces that come together to make that big picture. It is important to be able to quickly locate a sentence or portion of a paragraph that discusses a particular point. Once you’ve found that sentence, you can re-read it in order to understand exactly what is being expressed.

4．Understand academic vocabulary
A newspaper or magazine article might use more everyday language—language that you would hear in conversations and read in emails. But an academic text, regardless of the subject, contains certain vocabulary that is standard in academic papers. There might be words to present theories such as  “propose”, “hypothesis”, “scenario”. Or there could be words that connect two sentences: “however”, “in addition”, “thus”. A good reader should be familiar with this type of vocabulary.

リーディングテストに重要なスキルとは？

皆さんこんにちは。
私はティム、ケンジントン英会話専属のTOEFLエキスパートです。
今日は皆さんにTOEFLのリーディングセクションについて、いくつかのインフォメーションをご紹介します。つまり、リーディングテストでハイスコアを取るために重要なスキルをお伝えします。

1. 表現されているメインの主張を読み取る
これは、表現されている文章の塊の中から、メインの主張を読み取る、という意味です。個々の文章を関連付け、段落の中からメインの主張を識別しなければいけません。

2.  著者の意図を理解する
文章の一説を読んだ時に、著者がなぜそれを含んだのかを理解する必要があります。例えば、議論の裏付けのためなのか、それとも新しい意見を導入するためでしょうか？それぞれの段落やパッセージ全体のの構造を理解する事は、内容の理解にとって重要です。

3. 特別な情報を見つけるために文章を流し読みする
段落の中で起こっている事について、全体像を理解するためには、全体像を作っている細かい部分もまた、理解する必要があります。そのためには、特定のポイントについて議論している文章や段落の一部をすぐに見つけられることが重要です。その文章を見つけたら、何が表現されているのかを正確に理解するために再読しましょう。

4.学術的なボキャブラリーを理解する
新聞や雑誌の記事では、あなたが会話やメールで聞くような日常的な言語が使われているかもしれません。でも学術的なテストでは、主題に関わらず、学術論文で一般的なボキャブラリーが含まれているかもしれません。 “propose”, “hypothesis”, “scenario”.等のセオリーを表す単語があるかもしれませんし、”however”, “in addition”, “thus”.等、２つの文を繋ぐ言葉があるかもしれません。良い読者はこのタイプのボキャブラリーに慣れている事でしょう。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Studying with your kids

Hey guys, As a kid’s teacher I’ve had many conversations with parents about how they can help their kids learn English at home. I always give specific advice depending on a number of factors, but I think one general thing I say to parents always holds true: any English you practice at home in a positive way, will be beneficial for your kid. Though the message is simple, I think it is really important, as I know a lot of parents are not confident about their English, and/or they don’t know if what they’re doing is effective. The two biggest things are that you’re helping your child to enjoy learning English, and that you’re increasing the time your child spends with English, those are the key points. 

If you think you can’t help your kid’s English, then think again. Every parent in Japan has at least a basic understanding of English, with this you can do something like read to your children, which is an incredibly valuable way to learn English with your child (it’ll also help your own English, too!). Don’t worry about your pronunciation, or if you don’t understand every word, getting quality time together with a good book is the most important thing. Be confident, and enjoy learning English together with your family.

いつも、それぞれの状況に合った沢山のアドバイスをしますが、親御さんにお伝えする常に変わらないひとつの真実はこうです。
あなたが家で積極的に英語の練習をする事は、子供にとってとても価値があります。
メッセージはとてもシンプルですが、これはとても大切な事です。親御さんの多くは、自分達の英語に自信が無く、何をすれば効果があるのかわかりません。
最も効果的な２つの事は、子供が英語学習を楽しめる様にサポートしてあげる事と、あなたのお子さんが英語と共に過ごす時間を増やしてあげる事です。
これらがキーポイントになるのです。

もしあなたがお子さんの英語学習のサポートができないとお考えでも、もう一度考えてみて下さい。日本のご両親は皆さん最低限の英語は理解されていますので、例えば本を読んであげるなどができます。これはお子さんの英語学習にとても効果のある方法です。（あなた自身の英語の上達にも役立ちます！）
発音の心配はいりませんし、全ての単語が分からなくてもいいのです。良い本と共に良い時間を過ごす事が最も重要です。
自信を持ってご家族一緒に英語学習を楽しんで下さい。

イングランドの秋の遊び「コンカーズ」

Hey guys, when I grew up, Autumn was a fun time to be a kid. Where I grew up, you were never very far away from a chestnut tree. Which to a kid meant one thing, and one thing only: Conkers.

A ‘conker’ is actually the seed of these large chestnuts called ‘horse chestnuts’. But ‘Conkers’ refers to a game played with said seeds. The game is simply one child hitting another child’s conker with their own, until one of them breaks, thus determining a winner.
But Conkers was so much more than that. The hunt for the perfect conker was something very important; big or small, no cracks, dark colour? There were many factors to consider. More than that, how do you prepare your conker for battle? Some people opted to freeze them, whereas some would heat them up! Some even waxed them to make them slippy. 

I can’t say if Conkers still dominates the school playgrounds of England, like it did when I was young. But trudging (walking slowly) through a field on a crisp (cold), Autumn morning, scouring (looking widely) for the perfect conker, is one of the most vivid (strong and clear) memories of my early childhood.

イングランドの秋の遊び「コンカーズ」

やあ皆さん。
私が成長している時、秋は子供にとって楽しい季節でした。

私が育った場所では、栗の木はいつもそう遠くない場所にありました。

子供にとってそれが意味することはたったひとつ、「コンカーズ」です。

「コンカー」は「トチノキ」と呼ばれる大きな栗の木の種のことです。
しかし「コンカーズ」は、種のことと同時にゲームをすることにも使います。ゲームはシンプルで、自分の種で他の子の種を割れるまで叩き、勝者が決まります。

しかし、コンカーズのゲームはそれだけではありませんでした。完璧な種を見つけることはとても重要でした。大きいか小さいか、ひびが入っていないか、濃い色をしているかか？考慮する要素は山ほどありました。さらに、戦いに向けての準備も重要です。種を凍らせる人達もいますし、熱する人達もいます！転びやすくするためにワックスをかける人々さえいるのです。

私が子供の頃やっていた様に、まだコンカーズがイングランドの運動場で行われているかは言及できません。でも、秋の朝、寒い草原で完璧な種を探し求めてゆっくりと歩き回っていたことは、私の幼少期の最も鮮明な記憶です。
