Push Yourself!

Hello there, 

I have noticed a trend amongst my students to kind of “cruise” at a certain level. It is very easy to get comfortable in class and fall into a kind of comfort zone. This is of course very pleasant but it doesn’t really lead to much progress in your studies. I recommend pushing yourself a little from time to time. Here are a few suggestions of what you could do to get yourself out of your comfort zone in our school. 

・Try taking a class a level higher than your current level
・Switch days and take a class with a different teacher
・Use the higher level supplemental materials, video, reading, grammar pdf etc.
・Take the occasional private lesson to up teacher to student speaking time
・Try taking an English exam from time to time. We also provide assistance with preparing for tests.

レッスンをしている中で、生徒さんたちは今のレベルのレッスンに留まる傾向があることに気づきました。
今のレッスンが快適で、一種のコンフォートゾーンに簡単に入ることができてしまいます。
もちろんこれは非常に楽しいことですが、学習の進歩にはあまりつながりません。
私がオススメするのは、ときどき自分自身に少しプレッシャーかけることです。
そこで今日は、ケンジントン英会話でのコンフォートゾーンから抜け出すための方法をご提案します。

・現在のレベルよりも高いレベルのレッスンを受けてみる
・レッスン日を変えみて、別の講師のレッスンを受けてみる
・より高いレベルの教材、動画、読書、文法などを使ってみる
・たまにプライベートレッスンを受けて、講師が話す英語をリスニングする時間を増やしてみる
・ときどき英語の試験を受けてみる (テスト対策のお手伝いをさせていただきます)

Get Itchy Feet

Hello again!

Since this weekend’s topic is about travelling, I thought I’d introduce this phrase to you “get itchy feet”. This means that you get a strong urge to travel somewhere, but it is not only used for that, we also use it to talk about feeling like you want a change. 

Example

I’m really getting itchy feet. It’s been two years since we couldn’t leave the country and I’m dying to travel somewhere nice and warm. 

I really like my job but I’ve been working there for 5 years now. I’m starting to get itchy feet and will probably start looking for something new.

このフレーズは、どこかに旅行したいという強い衝動に駆られることを意味しますが、それだけでなく、あなたが変化を望んでいるような気持ちについて話す時にも使われます。

I’m really getting itchy feet. It’s been two years since we couldn’t leave the country and I’m dying to travel somewhere nice and warm.
(とても旅行をしたくてうずうずしています。国を離れることができずに2年が経ちました。どこか素敵で暖かい場所に旅行したくてたまりません。)

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
A secret hip hop fan

I know when you look at me you probably imagine a man who loves the higher arts, opera, ballet, and classical music, but deep down, I’m a serious hip hop fiend. My interest in hip hop first probably started when I was still in primary school, I remember liking some kind of more pop based hip hop back then, but I think it really kicked in when I first heard an album called “The Chronic” in 1992 when I was 14. One listen to the deep base of the intro tune and I was totally hooked forever. I still play it  before I go out or when I’m running because it not only  gives me a boost but also goosebumps, more from the memories rather than the music since I’ve heard it a million times now.

Unfortunately for me, hip hop was nowhere near popular in the northwest of Scotland in the late eighties and nineties, and I had to keep my deep obsession with all things hip hop a close secret, shared mostly with my brother and one other good friend, because in those days in the UK it was all about dance music and I was definitely in a very small circle of fringe music lovers. My devotion to  hip hop was most definitely not shared by my parents, ex girlfriend, most of my friends, and nowadays my wife either, but it doesn’t matter because me and my music have stuck together. 

Nowadays, the genre has become really popular and though I like some new stuff, I’ve found that my music tastes have stuck in a single period, late eighties through to early two thousands and no matter what new music I try, I always go back to my vintage, former underground music. Earlier this year the same man who made the album that really got me hooked on hip hop performed at the Super Bowl, which is one of the most watched events in the world. 

Hip hop has come a long way and I’m glad I stayed on the train.

秘密のヒップホップファン

みなさんは私を見ると、アート、オペラ、バレエ、クラシック音楽を愛する男性を想像するかもしれませんが、実は私はヒップホップ狂です。
ヒップホップに興味を持ったのは小学生の頃だったと思います。
当時はもっとポップなヒップホップが好きでしたが、1992年、私が14歳の時に「The Chronic」というアルバムを初めて聴いたときから、ヒップホップに深くのめり込んで行ったと記憶しています。
イントロの重低音を聴いて、永遠に夢中になりました。
今でも外出する前やランニングする時に聞いていますが、気分が上がるだけでなく鳥肌もたつほどです。
何百万回も聞いているので、その気分の高揚は音楽からというよりも思い出から来るものでしょう。

私にとって残念なことに、80年代後半から90年代にかけて、スコットランドの北西部ではヒップホップは全く人気がありませんでした。
ヒップホップに対する深い熱意を秘密にしなければならなかったので、ヒップホップについては主に兄と親友とだけ共有していました。
なぜなら、当時のイギリスではダンスミュージックがすべてであり、私は明らかに音楽好きの中でも端っこの小さな世界の中にいました。
私のヒップホップへの愛情は、両親、元ガールフレンド、ほとんどの友人、そして最近では妻にも共有されていませんでしたが、それは問題ではありません。私と音楽は結束しているからです。

今では、このジャンルはとても人気があります。
私は新しいものも好きですが、好みとしては、80年代後半から2000年代前半までの期間が特に好きであることがわかりました。
どんなに新しい曲を試しても、私はいつも、古いかつてのアンダーグラウンドミュージックに戻っていきます。
今年の初め、私をヒップホップに夢中にさせたアルバムを作った男性が、世界で最も注目されているイベントの一つであるスーパーボウルで演奏しました。

ヒップホップは長い道のりを歩んできました。
私はその旅路を共に歩めたことを嬉しく思います。

We will be practicing talking about our travel preferences, discussing what is good to do or see in Japan, giving our opinion on different places and activities, and making recommendations.
