Looking Back on the Year

Hi,
For me, it’s interesting looking back on the year of 2022. I finally settled into living in the city, as before I lived in Asakura for five years. I also achieved many of my basic goals like writing on my blog, regular exercise, healthy eating and some financial goals too – in fact, I exceeded them!

I think it was a good year for me, but for the world it was a turbulent year. Economically we’re moving into harder times because of the pandemic and the Russian conflict, and I think people are generally much more worried now about a lot of things.

Personally, I’m fine and I think the future will be fine. My thinking is always about what I can do to make my life the best it can be, not what the world is like, because that is out of my control. I hope you think the same.

私にとって2022年を振り返るのは興味深いことです。
朝倉に5年間住んでいた時と同じように、ようやく福岡に落ち着きました。
また、ブログを書くこと、定期的な運動、健康的な食事、いくつかの経済的目標など基本的な目標の多くも達成しました。
実際にはそれらを超えました!

私にとっては良い年だったと思いますが世界にとっては激動の年でした。
経済的にはパンデミックとロシアの紛争により困難な時期に移行しており、人々は多くのことについてとても心配していると思います。

個人的には問題はなく、将来も大丈夫だと思います。
私は世界がどうなっているかではなく、自分の人生を最高のものにするために何ができるかについて常に考えています。あなたもそうだといいな。

Hi everyone,
With the end of the year now at our doorstep, most of us teachers at the kids academy have been preparing for Xmas lessons for the kids. A lot of this involves little games using English, creative crafting activities and so on. It’s all quite fun, and kids really enjoy speaking in English when it’s something they enjoy – in this case, Xmas!

【英語学習アドバイス】まずは小さく始めて習慣を確立させることが大事

Start Small

Hello everyone,
It’s always important to remember that learning a language is not a sprint but a marathon. Keeping at it for a long time and establishing long term study habits that work for you is definitely better than studying super hard for 2 months and then giving up. 

A very important first rule for most people when starting or when trying to establish a new language learning habit is to start small. Setting difficult-to-achieve targets in the beginning of your studies is basically setting yourself up for failure. 

It would be much preferable to set a small achievable everyday target (such as 5 minutes a day) at least at first so you can start building your language learning habit. (Remember that in order to establish a habit you should first set a clearly defined time for it every day) After you have established your habit and studying 5 minutes a day has become really easy, then you can up your target to say 15 minutes a day.

言語を学ぶことは短距離走ではなく、マラソンであることを覚えておくことは常に重要です。
学習を長期間続けて、自分に合った長期的な学習習慣を確立することは、２ヶ月間だけ一生懸命勉強して挫折してしまうよりも間違いなく効果があります。

言語学習を始めるとき、または新しい言語学習の習慣を確立しようとするとき、ほとんどの人にとって非常に重要な第一のルールは、小さく始めることです。
学習の初めに達成困難な目標を設定することは基本的には失敗への準備です。

言語学習の習慣を身につけられるように、少なくとも最初は達成可能な小さな毎日の目標 (1日5分など)を設定することをおすすめします。(習慣を確立するには、まず学習する時間を決める必要があることを忘れないでください。)
習慣を確立し、1日5分の学習がとても簡単になったら、目標を1日15分に上げることができます。

良い言語学習の習慣を確立する方法について、いつでも私に相談してください。

Hello everyone,

It’s very tough to gauge whether I had a good year or not at the end of the year. The biggest problem is that I, as most of us, suffer from recency bias and tend to place more importance on events that happened to us recently. If that’s the case then this year has been terrible for me as my last week was particularly bad.

If I try to avoid recency bias and also try to remember what I did this year. I also need to remember what my new year resolution was this year cause I have no idea what it was anymore. I’ll check and get back to writing this blog!

5 minutes later
Ok I checked my first blog of the year and found out my resolution! It was to always be curious about things. I’d like to as much as possible read and research things that I don’t know with a goal of learning and educating myself as much as possible. 

Wow, I actually really did that this year. I’ve read a tonne of books so far, and I have studied about many things I knew very little about, mainly astronomy and science. I also managed to study Japanese a fair bit and I think if I keep it up in a year or two I’ll be fairly fluent in it which would be super helpful.

I will post about my favourite books of the year on our Yakuin blog before the holidays so please check it out for those of you that like reading and are interested in my recommendations.

今年が良い年だったかどうかを判断するのは非常にむずかしいことです。
判断する際の最大の問題は、ほとんどの人がそうであるように、終末効果(recency bias)に悩まされ最近起こった出来事をより重視する傾向があるということです。
そのため先週は特にひどかったので今年がどうだったか判断するとしたら、今年はひどいものでした。

終末効果(recency bias)を避け今年何をしたかを思い出そうとすると、今年の新年の抱負が何であったかを思い出す必要があります。
確認してからブログの続きを書きます！

わかりました。今年最初のブログ「ティムの新年の抱負」に今年の抱負が書いてありました！

「常に物事に興味を持つことです。可能な限り学び、成長することを目標として、自分の知らないことをできるだけ読んで調べたいと思っています。」

ワオ、私は今年これらを実際に行いました。
これまでにたくさんの本を読み、天文学や科学などほとんど何も知らなかった多くのことを学びました。
また日本語もかなり勉強できたので、これを1、2年続ければかなり流暢に話せるようになり、とても役立つと思います。

冬休み前に、今年のお気に入りの本について ケンジントン英会話 薬院校(ウィンザー英会話)のブログ に投稿する予定です。
読書好きで、私のおすすめの本に興味がある方はぜひチェックしてください。

How to use “not the best of”

Hello everyone,
Our topic for this week is “Best of the Year” so I would like to share with you an expression using the word “best”.

It’s “not the best of (noun)” and it’s a soft and natural way of saying that something is not good. For example: “That’s not the best of ideas”. Please be careful to use the noun in its plural form. “That’s not the best of ideas” (we say ideas NOT idea).

Ex. I didn’t have the best of weeks last week. My cat died and I fractured my arm. I really miss my cat 🙁

not the best of + 名詞

これは、何かが良くないことを柔らかく自然に伝える言い方です。
例えば、That’s not the best of ideas. (それはあまり良いアイディア[最高のアイディア]ではありません。)

名詞を複数形で言うことにご注意ください。
That’s not the best of ideas.
「idea」ではなく「ideas」を使います。

[例文]
I didn’t have the best of weeks last week. My cat died and I fractured my arm. I really miss my cat 🙁

Example, the best book you read this year or the best movie you watched this year, the best place you travelled to this year and so on!!!
It’s a perfect opportunity for you to talk about your favourite things.

What we are doing in Kensington
Moving all our students to Line Official

Hey everyone,
The year is approaching its end and I think everyone is getting busier and busier trying to finish up as much work as possible before the holidays. 

The same applies to us in Kensington and one of the things that you have noticed happening recently is that we have asked all of you to move to Line Official. 

This change will allow us to considerably improve how we communicate with you as it’s a communication mode designed primarily for businesses such as ours. We are already almost finished moving all our students to it, thank you so much for your cooperation so far!

Hello there everyone!

Today’s business English expression is “run by” which means to notify a person of your intentions or plans. We often use it when we need clarification or permission to proceed with something at work. 

Examples

“This plan for the end of year party looks pretty good to me Jerry. You’d better just run it by the boss though just to be sure we are all on the same page. “

“ As far as I can see all our accounts are in order. I’ll run the numbers by the accountant in the morning though just to make sure.”

Make a to do list

Hello again.  

The last couple of years have not been great for any of us and have affected us all in different ways. One thing I have noticed over these past two years is that some of my students seem to be lacking direction when it comes to their studies mainly because the original reason for studying has been affected by the covid pandemic. 

One way to keep focusing on your studies though is to identify what you have succeeded in doing so far and what you need to learn in the future. 

For example It could be a grammar list. Do you know how and when to use the present perfect? Yes?. Good for you! No? Time to focus on that. 

It could be more practical. Have you successfully handled a customer at your workplace in English? Yes?How can you do it even better next time No? Ask your teacher to help you with it. 

I think that compiling a “can do” and “needs work” list is a very good way for you to improve on what you have learned and also give you some direction and focus to your studies and to keep you motivated to learn more and use what you have learned too. Language learning is a pretty long process and there is always room for improvement. If you need clear instruction on what you should be focusing on from now on, please remember you can ask your teacher anytime.

ここ数年は、私たちの誰にとっても素晴らしいものではなく、さまざまな形で私たち全員に影響を与えてきました。
この2年間で気づいたことの一つは、英語の勉強に関しての方向性を見失ってしまったように見える生徒さんがいるということです。
勉強学習の本来の理由が新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックの影響を受けたためです。

学習に集中し続ける方法の一つは、これまでにその学習によって成功したことと、将来のために学ぶべきものを見極めることです。

たとえば、それは文法リストかもしれません。
「現在完了形をいつ、どのように使うか知っていますか？」
Yesですか？それならよかったです！
Noですか？それでは、それに集中する必要があります。

もっと実用的なものかもしれません。
「職場で英語で顧客対応に成功したことがありますか?」Yesですか?
「次にもっとうまくやるにはどうすればいいでしょうか？」講師に訪ねてみて、手伝ってもらいましょう。

「can do（できること）」と「needs work（必要な作業）」のリストを作成することは、学んだことを改善するためにとても良い方法です。
さらに学習への方向性と焦点を与え、さらに学んだり、学んだ言葉を使ったりするモチベーションを維持するのに非常に良い方法だと思います。
言語学習はかなり長いプロセスであり、常に改善の余地があります。
今後何に注力すべきか明確な指示が必要な場合は、いつでも講師に質問してくださいね。

a quick trip home

Hi there! 

Last month I had to make an unscheduled visit to the UK and even though it was a bit of a mad dash I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it (except the 13 hour layover in Helsinki airport that is).  It’s been a few years since I last went back so no big surprises for me this time.The last couple of times I felt like a complete alien in my own country because I hadn’t been back for so long.  There were a couple of things that occurred to me while I was there though. One thing that struck me was the rest of the world really seems to have moved on from covid. There are no restrictions, the number of infections doesn’t appear on the news and most of all nobody is wearing a mask anymore. On my first day back I asked my brother if I should bring one with me when we were going out and  he looked at me like I was crazy and said “What for? ” The other thing was that I am very out of practice at small talk. The Scots are a friendly bunch and due to the amount of time I have spent in Japan I’m a bit taken aback when shop staff or waiters etc strike up a conversation with me. I’m just not sure how to react! 

I had a chance to meet up with friends who I haven’t seen for a long time,some for almost twenty years actually and yes, we partied Scottish style so I was exhausted when I got back and the price of international flights right now is kind of beyond a joke but all in all it was a nice little trip. Can’t wait to go back longer next time round!

急な帰省

こんにちは！

先月、私は予定外のイギリス訪問をしなければなりませんでした。
少し気が狂ったようにバタバタでしたが、私はそれを完全に楽しんだと言わざるを得ません (ヘルシンキ空港での13時間の乗り継ぎを除いて)。
前回帰国してから数年しか経っていないので、今回は大きな驚きはありませんでした。
それまでは、私は長い間帰国していなかったので、自分の国で自分は完全に外国人かのように感じていました。
今回、私が帰省している間、私に起こったことがいくつかありました。
まず私を驚かせたのは、世界の残りの部分が本当にcovidから離れたように見えるということでした。
制限はなく、感染者数はニュースに載らず、何よりももう誰もマスクを着用していません。
帰国した初日、兄弟に出かけるときにマスクを持って行ったほうがいいかと尋ねたところ、彼はまるで私が狂ったかのように目を向けて、「何のために？」と言いました。
次に驚いたことは、私は世間話が苦手になったということです。
スコットランド人はとてもフレンドリーですが、私は日本で過ごした時間が長いため、店のスタッフやウェイターなどが私と会話を始めると少し面食らいます。
どう反応していいのか分からないのです！

長い間会っていなかった友人達と会う機会がありました。20年近く会っていない友人もいました。
そして、もちろん、スコットランド式のパーティーをしたので、戻ったときには疲れ果てていたし、それに今の国際線の料金は冗談じゃないほど高すぎます。
しかし、全体としては素敵なプチ旅行でした。
次回はもっと長く滞在するのが待ちきれません！
