Greetings everyone, is autumn knocking on our door yet? 

As you think about the answer to that question, here is another short tip for the 

TOEIC grammar section. As you know, grammar is the way of arranging words to build or construct meaningful sentences. The words that make a sentence are categorised into 8 groups called the 8 parts of the speech. As you practice for the grammar test, please familiarize yourself with each of the 8 parts of the speech.

  1. noun 2.adjective 3.verb 4. adverb 5.preposition 6. article 7. conjunction 8. interjection

ご存知のように、文法は、意味のある文を組み立てたり構成したりするために単語を配置する方法です。

Keep your targets realistic

Hello everyone, 

I’d like to continue with my theme from my last blog from a few weeks past. In my last blog I argued that students should focus on basic competency before targeting for a high TOEIC score and on a similar note I’d like to stress how important it is that students keep their targets realistic. 

An example of that is if your last score was 600 aiming for a score of 800 in a period of a few months is not a very realistic target. You may be very lucky and achieve such a high score in such a short period of time but it’s very unlikely.

A jump of 200 points indicates a very significant jump in language ability and a period of 6-12 months with consistent studying is a much more realistic target.

数週間前の私のブログテーマから引き続き、今日もTOEICについて書きたいと思います。
前回のブログで私は、生徒さんは高いTOEICスコアを目指す前に基本的な能力に焦点を当てるべきだと主張しました。
同様に、生徒さんが目標を現実的に保つことがいかに重要であるかを強調したいと思います。

例えば、前回のスコアが600点で、それを数か月の間に800点にしようと目指すのは、あまり現実的ではありません。
もし幸運に恵まれれば、このように短い期間で高いスコアを達成する可能性はあるかもしれません。ですが、ほとんどないでしょう。

200点も上げるということは、言語能力においてとても重要な飛躍を意味します。
一貫した学習を伴う6〜12ヶ月の期間の方が、数ヶ月という期間よりも、はるかに現実的な目標です。

【英検対策】スピーキングの答え方と写真描写のコツ

Eiken test level 3 (Speaking test)

When taking the speaking section of the test the questions you will be asked are almost always the same. You will be asked to read a short piece of writing and the question for that is always “Why” so when you read the text find the words “so” or “because” and that is where your answer will be. My students seem to get confused by texts like this. 

In Japan, fish is very popular. It is both healthy and delicious. Fish can be cooked in many ways so it is used by chefs in restaurants.

Q. Why is fish used by chefs in restaurants? 

A few of my students answered this as “because it is healthy and delicious” which is true but the question asks you about why it is used by chefs in restaurants so please be careful to make sure you are answering the right question. “It is both healthy and delicious” has no connection to why chefs use it in restaurants in this text. 

Also, when you are describing the picture you will often be asked about location. Where is the …?  so remember to practice things like on the/ under the/ next to the/ in front of the to make your life easier on test day. 

Congratulations to my guys who passed the level 3 speaking test by the way! I drilled you hard on it so test day seemed like a breeze for you! Well done!

テストでスピーキングを受験する時、出題される質問はだいたい同じです。
短い文章を読むように求められますが、それに対する質問は常に「Why」なので、文章を読むときには「so」または「because」という言葉を見つけてください。答えはそこにあります。
私の生徒さんたちは、このような文章に混乱しているようです。

In Japan, fish is very popular. It is both healthy and delicious. Fish can be cooked in many ways so it is used by chefs in restaurants.
(日本では、魚はとても人気があります。魚はヘルシーで美味しいです。魚はさまざまな方法で調理することができるため、レストランのシェフが魚を使用します。)

問題：Why is fish used by chefs in restaurants?
(なぜレストランのシェフは魚を使用しますか？)

私の生徒さんの何人かはこれを「because it is healthy and delicious（ヘルシーで美味しいから）」と答えました。
それは正しいことですが、問題はレストランのシェフがなぜそれを使用しているのかを尋ねています。
このように、質問に的確に答えているか注意して確認するようにしましょう。
「It is both healthy and delicious」という文の中には、シェフがレストランで魚を使う理由と関係するものは入っていません。

また、写真描写の問題では、場所についてよく尋ねられます。
 「Where is the …?（…はどこですか？）」
そのため、テストを楽にするために、下記のフレーズを練習するようにしましょう。

・on the（〜の上に）
・under the（〜の下に）
・next to the（〜の隣に）
・in front of the（〜の前に）

Greetings everyone and hope you’re keeping cool and healthy in the steamy summer. I’ve been giving short tips on the TOEIC speaking test in the last few blogs. Let’s now move on to the grammar test tips. Today’s Tip is: Please read the whole sentence and understand it. Don’t rush. If you rush you may choose the wrong answer (especially the almost correct answer or the “fake”)

Example:  Q. The team’s great performance in the championship________their good teamwork. 

  1. resulted in
  2. as resulted 
  3. resulted from
  4. to result

If you didn’t understand the sentence clearly, you may choose answer (1) which is wrong. The the right answer is (3)

文章全体を読んで理解しましょう。
急がないでください。急ぐと、間違った答えを選んでしまうかもしれません（特に、ほぼ正しい選択肢やひっかけ問題）

[例題：穴埋め問題]

The team’s great performance in the championship________their good teamwork.

(1) resulted in
(2) as resulted
(3) resulted from
(4) to result

文章を明確に理解していなければ、間違った答えである(1)を選んでしまうかもしれません。

正しい答えは(3)です。

Focus on basic competency first

Hello everyone,

We many times get students from companies where a high TOEIC score is required.
Usually the target is around 800 which is according to the TOEIC administrator a level equivalent to B2 on the CEFR. 

A B2 user can communicate easily and spontaneously in a clear and detailed manner. This is not yet an experienced speaker, but a B2 user is able to understand and be understood in most situations.

Many times our students though are nowhere the B2 level, sometimes they are A2 or even A1 on the CEFR. (A2 and A1 refer to only basic use of English) and are given no tools to improve their general English competency other than taking TOEIC classes.

The problem with that is that taking TOEIC classes will do very little to build up your English level if you are a very basic user of English. A very simple analogy would be trying to do high school math without knowing junior high school math. The result is of course a very likely failure to get the target score regardless of how much one tries and a lot of stress. 

I would advise the companies requiring such scores to focus on building up the general fluency of their staff first and then focus on building them up to a more advanced speaker with a target of 800 in TOEIC. ケンジントン英会話には、高いTOEICのスコアが求められる企業から来られる生徒さんが多くいらっしゃいます。

通常、ターゲットはだいたい800点で、TOEICの管理者(IIBC)によると、CEFRのB2に相当するレベルです。

B2レベルの方は、明確かつ詳細な方法で、容易に、また自発的にコミュニケーションをとることができます。
まだ経験豊富な英語話者ということではありませんが、B2の方はほとんどの状況で英語の理解が可能です。

ケンジントン英会話の生徒さんはB2レベルではない方が多いです。A2またはA1の方もいます。(CEFRのA2とA1は基本的な英語のみを使える方を指します。)
そして彼らはTOEICのレッスンを受講する以外に一般的な英語能力を向上させるためのツールは与えられていません。

問題は、もしあなたが基本的な英語だけ使える方である場合、TOEICのレッスンを受講しても英語レベルを上げるのにほとんど効果がないということです。
分かりやすい例えとしては、中学校の数学を知らずに高校の数学をやろうとするようなものです。
もちろん、その結果は、どれだけトライして、多くのストレスがあっても、目標スコアを取得できない可能性が非常に高くなります。

そのようなスコアを必要とする企業様には、まずスタッフの基本的な英語の流暢さを構築することに焦点を当て、その次にTOEICで800点を目標とするより高度な英語話者になってもらうことに重きを置くことをお勧めします。

英検の二次試験試験が始まりますね！

Hello there everyone! If you are one of our students who successfully passed the Eiken test in May ( congratulations everyone! ) then you may be taking the speaking test this weekend.You should have already received your scorecard and your second test admission card. On the day of your test please don’t forget to take your admission card, your I.D card from the first test, some form of identification with a photograph on it, and remember to please please switch off your phone before you enter the room! If you didn’t make it this time then the application period for the next test this year is from the 1st of August to the 8th of September.

Greetings everyone, how’re you dancing to the rhythms of summer? Here’s yet another short tip for the TOEIC speaking test; (More on Qn 11)  As you already know, question number 11 requires you to express your opinion on a given subject or issue. As I said earlier, speak as much as you can in the time you have (60 seconds).  Your response must clearly indicate your choice or opinion, supported by logical reasons or arguments and examples. Of course, pay attention to grammar and structure, word choice, pronunciation and intonation as well as pace and flow of your speech.

Greetings everyone, nature is wearing a green coat to welcome summer. How’re you getting ready for summer? Here’s another short tip for the TOEIC speaking test;

Qn 11 Express an opinion. Speak as much as possible in the time you have. (You’ll have 45 seconds to prepare and speak for 60 seconds)   Please express your opinion with organized and logical ideas.   Would you rather work from home or commute to the workplace everyday?  (This type of question requires you to choose A or B and give reasons for your choice)  What do you think of taxi hailing apps like uber? ( This type of question asks what you think are the good and possibly bad points about the taxi hailing apps and a conclusion. (More on Qn 11 next time)

Hello everyone, today I’m going to give you some advice on how to improve your writing for Eiken but this advice also applies to any other written English exam.

When you are practicing for the Eiken writing, always try to write two different answers to practice questions:

–  One agreeing
– The other disagreeing

Why should you do this?

If you write only agreement, then you only consider one set of arguments. This is useful in situations where everyone agrees, but it’s very important to know opposing opinions, too. When you think about counterpoints, you are actively thinking about new ways to approach an issue. This will give you better ideas on what to say, it will help you understand how strong your points are, and it’ll help expand your vocabulary.

Finally, it also gives you flexibility. This is REALLY important in Eiken, because you don’t know what the question will be!

英検のライティングを練習しているときは、練習用の質問に対して常に2つの答えを書いてみてください。

・ひとつは賛成する意見
・もうひとつは反対の意見

なぜ2つの答えを用意する必要があるのか

もし賛成の意見だけを書くとすると、あなたは1つの議論のみを考えることになります。
これは全員が同意する状況でしか役立ちません。反対意見を知ることはとても重要なことです。
反対意見について考えるとき、あなたは問題に取り組むための方法について積極的に考えています。
これにより、どう意見するべきかが分かり、自分の意見がどれほど強固なものかも理解でき、ボキャブラリーを増やすのにも役立ちます。

また、この方法を使うことにより問題に柔軟に回答できるようになります。
試験ではどんな質問が出題されるかわからないので、これは本当に重要なことです！

【英検３級】筆記セクションの時間配分について

Hello there everyone. As you know the first Eiken test of this year is coming up in under one month so here is a little advice for the guys studying with us that are taking level 3. Don’t forget that the first section of the test is 50 mins. My advice is to spend about 35-38 mins on the vocab and reading sections and about 12-15 mins on the writing section. This is because the writing section is pretty simple, it only requires a few sentences giving two different reasons to answer a question. It does count for one third of your overall score though so you should take time to check spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and most importantly if you have actually answered the question given to you.

ご存知のように、今年初めの英検はあと１ヶ月もたたないうちに行われます。
そこで、英検３級に向けて学習している生徒さんたちへ、少しアドバイスがあります。

テストの最初のセクションは50分です。
そのため、リーディングのセクションに約35〜38分、ライティングのセクションに約12〜15分で解くことをおすすめします。
これは、ライティングセクションが非常に単純であり、質問に答えるのに2つの理由を含めるいくつかの文しか必要としないためです。
ただし、全体のスコアの3分の1に相当するため、スペル、句読点、大文字小文字の区別、そして最も重要なこととして、与えられた質問に対して適切に回答したかどうかを確認するために時間をかける必要があります。
