Travel English  – travel idioms

Hello there, again sticking with the theme of idioms here are a couple of expressions to use when someone asks you how your holiday was.

If you want to say you really enjoyed yourself then you can use these.

Have a  whale of a time/ Have the time of your life.

“How was your trip back home?”
“Great thanks, we had a whale of a time”
“ Wonderful thanks, we had  the time of our lives.”

When you want to talk about how nice it is to escape your daily routines you can use..

get away from it all/  escape the humdrum

“ It was nice to get away from it all”
“ It’s good to escape the humdrum every now and then.”

Travel English  – Striking up a conversation

Hello there everyone, hope you are all enjoying the wonderful weather this week!

Sometimes, when I’m drinking in the city, people will try to strike up a conversation with me.There are lots more tourists in Fukuoka nowadays so the opportunity to meet foreigners is much greater than before Suddenly being asked where you are from can be a bit of a surprise so here are some things you could use to strike up a conversation with someone you are meeting for the first time.

Excuse me is anyone sitting here?

Do you mind if I join you?

What brought you to Japan? ( This sounds a little nicer than why did you come to Japan?)

How long have you been in Japan?

Are you here on holiday?

What do you think of it so far?

Have you been to Tokyo?

Have you tried sushi yet?

You should definitely go to Kyoto.

Nice meeting you, I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay.

Travel English  – Talking about a trip using when

Hello there everyone! We will be using clauses in the lessons today and tomorrow so let me explain a little how to use some of them.

For example if you were talking about a trip you’d been on.

When

There are two main clauses, independent.

I went to thailand.

I was 19.

These are both full sentences, but if you use “when” one of them must become a subordinate clause which means it can’t stand alone as a sentence .

When I was 19,

As you can see the sentence isn’t finished and leaves wondering what happened, but if you add them together they become a full sentence.

When I was 19, I went to Thailand.
I went to Thailand when I was 19.

As you can see if the subordinate clause comes first, it needs a comma, if not then it doesn’t.

Here are a few more examples.

When I got there, it was baking hot.
It was baking hot when I got there.

When I got to my hotel, they said I didn’t have a reservation.
They said I didn’t have a reservation when I got to my hotel.

When the sun came up on the first morning, I was woken up by the early morning call to the mosque.
I was woken up by the early morning call to the mosque when the sun came up on the first morning.

トラベル英会話ー旅行の話しをするときに使うwhenについて

みなさんこんにちは！今日と明日のレッスンは文節について行っていきますので、これらの使い方について少し説明させてください。

例えばあなたがこれまでに行った場所について話しているとき。

When

ここに２つの独立した文節があります。

I went to thailand.（私はタイに行きました。）
I was 19. （19歳でした。）

これらはどちらも完全な一節です。ただし、“when”を使う場合はどちらかの一文を従属節にしなければならず、独立して使うことはできません。

When I was 19, （私が19歳の時、）

ご覧の通り文はまだ完成しておらず疑問が残ると思いますが、足し合わせるとひとつの完全な文になります。

When I was 19, I went to Thailand.　(私は19歳の時、タイに行きました。)
I went to Thailand when I was 19. (私は19歳の時、タイに行きました。)

見てわかる通り、従属節が前に来るときはカンマが必要です。後に来るときはカンマは必要ありません。

ここにもう少し例文を出します。

When I got there, it was baking hot.
It was baking hot when I got there.

（ここに来た時、焼けそうなくらい暑かったよ！）

When I got to my hotel, they said I didn’t have a reservation.
They said I didn’t have a reservation when I got to my hotel.

（ホテルに着いた時、ホテルのスタッフは私たちの予約はないと言いました。）

When the sun came up on the first morning, I couldn’t believe the heat.
I couldn’t believe the heat when the sun came up on the first morning.

（太陽が出てきたとき、信じられないくらい暑かったよ。）

Travel English  – in transit

Hello there everyone. Today I want to show you a little mistake that everyone seems to make when they are talking about travelling and that is the phrase “ in transit” . We usually see this on the airport information signs but in transit simply means moving something from one place to another.

This is what I often hear.

“I have to transit planes at Shanghai airport.”

We don’t use the phrase that way. Instead it’s better to say..

“ I have to catch a connecting flight at Shanghai Airport.” or “ I change planes once at Shanghai Airport”.

みなさんこんにちは。　今日はみなさんが旅行について話すときに使っている、間違いやすい言葉“ in transit” というフレーズについて話したいと思います。私たちは普段空港のインフォメーションでそれを見ると思いますが、transitとは単純に、一つの場所から他の場所へ何かを移動するという意味です。

これは私がよく聞く間違いやすい例文です。
