Business English
run by

Hello there everyone!

Today’s business English expression is “run by” which means to notify a person of your intentions or plans. We often use it when we need clarification or permission to proceed with something at work.

Examples

“This plan for the end of year party looks pretty good to me Jerry. You’d better just run it by the boss though just to be sure we are all on the same page. “

“ As far as I can see all our accounts are in order. I’ll run the numbers by the accountant in the morning though just to make sure.”

Hope that comes in handy.

Business English
“Discuss” and “Ensure”

Both these words are pretty common English words, but you’ll frequently hear them in the corporate world, where language is a little less direct and generally softer.

To “Discuss an issue” means to “talk about a problem”. The former phrase is more business oriented, while the latter is a bit more casual. I use both in any context.

To “Ensure things are running smoothly” means “To make sure everything is OK”. The former is again, very business oriented, and the latter is more relaxed.

Using any of these is fine honestly, but you’ll frequently hear people use these kinds of words in business or corporate settings.

Denny

「Discuss an issue」とは、「Talk about a problem(問題について話す)」という意味です。

Ensure things are running smoothly」とは、「To make sure everything is OK(すべてが順調であることを確認すること)」を意味します。

【ビジネス英会話】go on a business trip(出張に行く)の使い方

Hey guys,

When we want to say 出張する in English we say “go on a business trip”.

Ex. I usually have to go on business trips on the weekends.

A variation of the expression above is “be on a business trip” and is used when someone is on a business trip at the time of speaking.

Ex. Mr. Nakagawa is not here, he is on a business trip in Fukuoka at the moment.

Aside from business, we can use the expression “go on a … trip” for other things as well. Ex. go on a fishing trip, go on a school trip, go on a company trip etc… Take note that “going on a business trip” and “going on a company trip” are different things.

Hope that’s all very helpful,

Failing doesn’t make you a failure. Giving up does.【ビジネス英会話】

Business English

Hello there, hope you had a good weekend. Our bizspeak this week is an inspirational quote about fear of failure. Never be afraid to fail Michael Jordan didn’t make his high school’s varsity basketball team the first time he tried out. Failing doesn’t make you a failure. Giving up does.

The message is clear; if we’re too afraid to fail, we can’t do anything.

「Any press is good press」

Business English
Social Media Brand

While it’s not super common in Japan yet, in the Western world, social media branding has become a major factor in successful businesses, especially across Twitter and Instagram.

Many small businesses are using these platforms to make posts to get more followers and generate income. Some of them in particular write very controversial things online so they can get attention, and there’s a saying in English where “Any press is good press”. It means that if it’s negative or positive feedback, the goal is to get attention and get sales.

Personally, I don’t like this method at all, but it’s something you can notice in the Western world as it has become very common.

Denny

仕事では「The whole is greater than the sum of its parts(全体は部分の総和に勝る)」が大事

Business English
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

This is an expression that I really love. I think the best marriages work this way, when people have skills and ideas that help elevate the achievements of a couple to something so much bigger and better than each person could achieve on their own.

The same applies to companies and more specifically teams, working in teams can be a pain at times and it can be bumpy and messy but when teams work well together, the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

Please try and use this expression,

Tim

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts(全体は部分の総和に勝る)

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts(全体は部分の総和に勝る)は、私が本当に大好きな表現です。

しかし、チームがうまく連携すると、the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts(全体は部分の総和に勝ります。)
