going out for lunch or dinner

Hey guys, 

Since our topic for today is “Going out”, it’s a good chance for me to talk about my going out habits. In truth I’m not so big on going out and mostly prefer a quiet night home with my family to drinking out.

Usually when I do go out, I mostly go out with my family to have dinner. My kids are not especially adventurous when it comes to food so we tend to go to the same few places for dinner. They include our favourite Chinese restaurant in Takamiya, our favourite Yakiniku restaurant in Hirao, our favourite Italian restaurant in Sakurazaka and our favourite French restaurant in Yakuin (The French restaurant we use for special occasions, wedding anniversaries or my wife’s birthday)

When I go out for lunch, I usually eat something quick and simple around our schools, mostly soba at a small soba restaurant in Takasago. 

Do you have any good recommendations for family-friendly restaurants in the Yakuin or Hirao area? If so please let me know!

こんにちは、みなさん。

今日のテーマは「Going Out（外出）」なので、私の外出習慣について話す良い機会です。
実のところ、私は外出があまり好きではなく、飲みに行くよりも家族と一緒に静かな夜を家で過ごすことを好むことが多いです。

外出するときはたいてい家族と一緒に夕食を食べに出かけるときです。
私の子どもたちは食べ物に関しては特に冒険的ではないので、夕食にはいくつかの同じ場所に行く傾向があります。
高宮にあるお気に入りの中華料理店、平尾のお気に入りの焼肉店、桜坂のお気に入りのイタリアンレストラン、薬院のお気に入りのフランス料理店 (特別な日、結婚記念日、または妻の誕生日に行くお店) によく行きます。

ランチに出かけるときは、たいてい学校の近くで手早く簡単なものを食べます。
よく行くのは、高砂にある小さなそば屋さんです。

Guising

As you all know this weekend is Halloween! I’m sure that a lot of you are familiar with some of the traditions connected with Halloween such as dressing up, carving jack o lanterns and especially trick or treating but have you ever heard of “guising”? 

Trick or treating is actually an American Halloween tradition and as such it has become the more widely recognised version of what happens on Halloween night due to the influence of American entertainment, but the UK, or Scotland at least, has a slightly different version which I just mentioned earlier called guising. 

The premise of guising is pretty much the same as trick or treating, kids dress up and visit houses in the neighbourhood and are rewarded with candy, fruit, and other kinds of snacks, but the main difference is that we have to actually go into the house and perform a “party piece”. Your party piece can be anything really but things like songs, jokes, riddles, and simple magic tricks are pretty popular. One time a couple of kids performed a ballroom dance in my living room which was pretty inventive I thought. In some houses you visit there may well be a Halloween party going on and you will be able to join that for a while and take part in some games that we like to play on Halloween night such as “dooking for apples” where you have to get as many apples as you can out of a basin only using your mouth!

I’m not sure if guising is still done in exactly the same way as this nowadays but I have some really fun memories of it when I was a child.

Guising（ガイジング）

ご存知の通り10月31日はハロウィン！
みなさんはハロウィンに関連する伝統として仮装やジャック・オ・ランタン、特にトリック・オア・トリートなどはよくご存じかと思いますが、「guising」について聞いたことがありますか?

トリック・オア・トリートは実際にはアメリカのハロウィンの伝統です。
アメリカのエンターテイメントの影響によって、ハロウィンの夜に行うものとして広く認識されています。
ですが、イギリス、または少なくともスコットランドでは、少し違うやり方をします。それは、前述の「guising（ガイジング）」呼ばれます。

「guising」の前提は、トリック・オア・トリートとほとんど同じです。
子どもたちは仮装して近所の家を訪れ、キャンディー、フルーツ、その他のスナックをご褒美として受け取りますが、主な違いは、実際に家に入って何か披露しなければいけないことです。
披露するものはなんでも構いませんが、歌、ジョーク、なぞなぞ、簡単な手品などはかなり人気があります。
ある時、数人の子供が私のリビングルームで社交ダンスを披露しましたが、これはかなり独創的だと思いました。
訪れる家の中には、ハロウィンパーティーが行われている時もあり、そのパーティーにしばらく参加して、ハロウィンの夜によく行われるゲームに参加することもできます。
「dooking for apples」と呼ばれるゲームでは、あなたは洗面器に入ったりんごを口だけでたくさん取り出さなければなりません！

今でもこれとまったく同じような「guising」が行われているのかどうかはわかりませんが、「guising」は私の子どもの頃の本当に楽しい思い出です。

Halloween in Uganda

How’s your weekend going everyone? It’s time to tell you yet again, a little bit about my country and culture on the theme of Halloween. When I was a kid, Halloween was not a popular holiday in my country. But christians used to celebrate All Hallows day (All saints Day) on November 1st. However, in the last 20 years Halloween has gained popularity. Many night clubs in cities have Halloween parties and parades. People dress up in Halloween costumes and have lots of fun!

私がこどもの頃、私の国ではハロウィンはポピュラーな日ではなく、キリスト教徒の人たちだけ、11月1日にAll Hallows day (万聖節) を祝っていました。
しかし、ここ20年間でハロウィンは人気を博しました。
都市の多くのナイトクラブでは、ハロウィンパーティーやパレードが開催され、人々はハロウィンの仮装をして、みんなでとても楽しんでいます！

【講師デニー】カフェイン摂取を一週間絶った結果

Caffeine Cuts

Last month, I cut out all caffeine intake for about a week, because I wanted to “detox” from it and reset my sleep, as my health was getting worse because of it.

Throughout that week, I slept about 9-10 hours a day. It was unbelievable how tired I got, and I had pretty strong headaches from caffeine withdrawals over two or three days.

After that though, I felt really good and very well rested. I now wake up at 6am every day and feel fresh, and I only drink coffee or anything with caffeine in the morning, around 7-8am.

Caffeine stays in your system for about 12 hours after drinking it, and it can cut deep sleep by about 20%. This means that you’re sleeping like someone who is 15 years older than you. Not good!

Try to cut caffeine for a week or a month and see what happens. You’ll be surprised how much we rely on it!

先月、カフェインの摂取を1週間ほど断ちました。
なぜなら、健康状態が悪化していたので、カフェインを「デトックス」して睡眠をリセットしたかったからです。

その週を通して、私は1日約9～10時間寝ていました。
信じられないほどの疲労感と、カフェイン離脱による2、3日にわたるかなりの頭痛に悩まされました。

しかしその後は、とても気分が良く、よく休むことができました。
私は今、毎日朝6時に起きてフレッシュに感じています。
そして、朝の7時から8時頃にコーヒーかカフェインを含むものだけを飲みます。

カフェインは飲んでから約12時間体内に留まり、深い睡眠を約20%減らすことがあります。
これは、今のあなたよりも15年歳をとった状態で寝ていることを意味します。良くないですね！

1週間または1ヶ月間カフェインをカットしてみて、何が起こるか見てみてください。
私たちがどれだけ依存しているかに驚くことでしょう。

【ジェイミー先生】富士山に登れませんでした

Mt Fuji Here I Didn’t Come!

Well, that was the second time I’ve visited Mount Fuji and not only did I not climb it, I didn’t even see it this time. In fact, I hardly even saw it last time. It was a fun trip though, I caught up with a couple of good friends who left Fukuoka in 2021, drank some great beers at the Baird Beer Brewery in Shizuoka, and generally had a blast. 

The problem was the weather. It rained so heavily the day we were supposed to climb that we could hardly drive the car up the motorway and the mountain hut I booked actually called me and advised me not to climb. Second day got up early ready to go and the closer we got to the foot of the mountain the worse the weather got until it was obvious we were going nowhere. Day number 3 was exactly the same sadly. Still, it isn’t the end of the world and I got myself in amazing shape before the climb so it was worth it just for that. I did spend a fair bit of cash on climbing gear so I’ll probably try again next year. Watch this space!

Mt Fuji Here I Didn’t Come!

ええと、富士山に行くのは今回で2回目でしたが、今回は登らなかったどころか、見ることさえ出来ませんでした。実は、前回もほとんど見れていません。
旅行は楽しかったですけどね。去年に福岡を離れた仲の良い友人たちと久しぶりに会って話し、静岡のベアードビール醸造所で素晴らしいビールを飲み、とても楽しい時間を過ごしました。

問題は天候でした。登るはずだった日は大雨で、高速道路を車で登ることがほとんどできませんでした。予約した山小屋からは、富士山に登らないようにと電話で忠告されました。
2日目は早起きして準備を整えましたが、山のふもとに近づくほど天候が悪化し、私たちはどこにも行けないことが明白でした。
悲しいことに、3日目もまったく同じでした。
それでも、それは世界の終わりではなく、登山前に体の状態を素晴らしいものに整えたことには価値があります。
登山用具にかなりのお金を費やしたので、おそらく来年も挑戦します。

Domestic tourism

Hope you’re having a great weekend everyone. In today’s blog about my hometown/country, let me stick to the week’s theme and talk a little about Domestic tourism. Domestic tourism means traveling within your own country, just like traveling in Japan by Japanese people.  In my home country Uganda, there are many national parks(Safari parks), game reserves and other natural attractions. However, until 10 or 15 years ago, 90% of visitors to those places were foreign tourists and High school students on school trips. In the last 10 years, the situation has changed. Now more Ugandans are interested in domestic leisure travel. Tour companies have created Safari tour packages for domestic travelers. They’re quite popular!

素晴らしい週末をお過ごしですか。
今日の、私の出身地についてのブログでは、今週のテーマに関連して、国内旅行について少し話をしたいと思います。
国内旅行とは、日本人が日本を旅行するのと同じように、自国内を旅行することです。
私の母国ウガンダには、多くの国立公園（サファリパーク）、動物保護区、その他の自然の観光スポットがあります。
しかし、10～15年前までは、観光客の9割が外国人観光客や修学旅行の高校生でした。過去 10 年間で、状況は変化しました。
現在、より多くのウガンダ人が国内のレジャー旅行に関心を持っています。
ツアー会社は、国内旅行者向けのサファリツアーパッケージを作成しています。
これらはとても人気があります！

【デニー先生】ペニーホイッスルとローホイッスルD管を練習中

The pennywhistle and Low D Whistle

Since around May or so, I’ve been actively practicing playing two instruments – the pennywhistle and the Low D whistle.

Both are actually the same kind of instrument, but the pennywhistle is small and has a higher pitch, and the low D is a bigger whistle but has a lower pitch. As you can guess, they are both in the note of D – this means that the lowest note they can play is the D note.

These instruments are originally from Ireland. I absolutely love playing it and am learning (and making) lots of songs for them. You can try the pennywhistle for a cheap price too – you can get beginner instruments for about 1500 yen on Amazon.

ペニーホイッスルとローホイッスルD管

5月くらいから、2つの楽器を積極的に練習しています。その楽器とはペニーホイッスルとローホイッスルD管です。

どちらも同じ種類の楽器ですが、ペニーホイッスルは小さくて音程が高く、ローホイッスルD管はペニーホイッスルよりも大きく、音程が低くなります。
ご想像のとおり、どちらもD調のホイッスルです。それは、演奏できる最低音がDの音であることを意味します。

これらの楽器はもともとアイルランドからきています。
私はそれを演奏するのが大好きで、たくさんの曲を学んでいます (そして作っています)。ペニーホイッスルは安くで購入でき、初心者用の楽器であればAmazonで1500円ほどで買えます。

My favourite TV Show

Hello everyone,

I usually don’t spend so much time watching stuff on TV but my family was away for a couple of days in Obon and Kensington was on holiday during that time so I did something I rarely get the chance to do anymore. Binge-watching! I binge-watched the last season of Better Call Saul which is one of my favourite dramas ever. 

The last season came out this year and finally I finished it last month. How was it? Great!!! As mentioned before, it’s one of the best dramas ever. Please give it a try if you haven’t watched it already.

What are your favourite dramas?

こんにちは、みなさん。

私は普段あまりテレビを見ないのですが、お盆に家族が数日間不在で、その間ケンジントン英会話も休暇だったので、めったにやる機会のないことをしました。それはBinge-watching（いっき見）！
これまで見てきた中で私のお気に入りのドラマの一つである「Better Call Saul（ベター・コール・ソウル）」の最終シーズンをいっき見しました。

今年にそのシーズンは公開され、やっと先月終わりました。
「How was it?（どうだった？）」「Great!!!（素晴らしい!!!）」さっきも言いましたが、これは今までで一番のドラマです。

Have no shoes?  Well, Joe down the street doesn’t have feet!

Hope you’re having a good weekend and keeping a positive attitude. Speaking of

positive attitude, when I was kid, whenever I complained about something, my grandmother would say; “Hey, you have no shoes? Well, Joe down the street  doesn’t even have feet!”
I didn’t understand what she  was talking about at first, but when I grew older I understood that she wanted me to know that I was luckier than many other people. My grandma was telling me to think positively.

良い週末を過ごし、前向きな姿勢を保っていることを願っています。

前向きな姿勢と言えば、私が子どもの頃、何かについて不平を言うときはいつでも、祖母はこのように言いました。

Hey, you have no shoes? Well, Joe down the street  doesn’t even have feet!
(ねえ、あなたは靴がない？通りを下ったところのジョーには足さえないよ！)

最初は彼女が何を言っているのかわからなかったのですが、年をとると、他の多くの人よりも自分が幸運だということを彼女が知ってほしかったのだと理解しました。
おばあちゃんは、前向きに考えるように私に伝えていました。

【デニー先生】トマス・アクィナスについて学んでいます

Learning about Aquinas

Recently, I’ve been really into studying theology – mainly about the writings of Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas was a scholar that lived in the medieval ages, and wrote something called the “Summa Theologiae”, which is a huge compendium of information about Christian theology.

I’m not reading the Summa, because it is several thousand pages long, but I’ve been studying about its teachings and ideas quite a bit. Aquinas was a very interesting person and was super intelligent – and I think his work is important to learn about if you want to learn about the history of the West. It influenced a lot of it!

最近、私は神学の勉強にはまっています。
主にトマス・アクィナスの著作についてです。
アクィナスは中世に生きた学者で、「神学大全」と呼ばれるものを書きました。
これは、キリスト教神学に関する膨大な情報をまとめたものです。

「神学大全」は数千ページにも及ぶので読んでいませんが、その教えや考え方についてはかなり勉強しています。
アクィナスは非常に興味深い人物で、非常に知的な人物でした。
西洋の歴史について学びたいのであれば、彼の研究について学ぶことは重要だと思います。
彼の研究は多くの西洋の歴史に影響を与えました！
