Hi everyone, how’s your language study going? 

The language learning advice/tip for me and  you, is understanding the culture(s) that use the language you’re learning is one of the shortcuts  of learning that language. Words, phrases, expressions make more sense and are more practical when we understand the cultural context in which they’re used. 

For example, You wouldn’t understand the expression “Trick or Treat!” without learning about the Halloween festival, would you? 

In the last 20 or so years, many people have been learning Japanese through singing Japanese songs, reading and watching manga and animation.

So, language = culture.

私自信とあなたへの言語学習のアドバイス・ヒントは、学習している言語の国の文化を理解することは、その言語を学習する近道の一つ、ということです。
単語、フレーズ、表現は、それらが使用される文化的背景を理解することで、より意味があり、より実用的になります。

たとえば、「Trick or Treat!」という表現は、ハロウィンのことを知らなければ理解できませんよね？

ここ20年ほどで、多くの人が日本の歌を歌ったり、マンガやアニメを見たり読んだりして日本語を学んでいます。

つまり、言語 ＝ 文化です。

Learning through context

When learning new words, most people use flash cards to memorize the meaning of a word, but the problem with this is that you don’t know how the word is used and what context.

A great way to learn is to read a book in English or any foreign language, and translate the words you don’t know, then reading the sentences again. This gives you context and understanding how the word is used, so you will memorize it much better. This is how I improve my Japanese, and I can memorize maybe 10-15 words in about 20 minutes. I recommend it!

新しい単語を学ぶとき、ほとんどの人は単語の意味を暗記するために単語カードを使いますが、これの問題点は、その単語がどのように使用され、どのような文脈で使われているかがわからないことです。

新しい単語を学ぶための良い方法は、学びたい言語で本を読み、知らない単語を調べ、そして文章をもう一度読むことです。
これにより、前後関係がわかり、単語がどのように使用されているかを理解できるようになるため、単語をよりよく覚えることができます。
これは私が日本語を上達させる方法で、約20分でおそらく10〜15単語を覚えることができます。

Hello there everyone, as you may have noticed Quizlet, the learning app that we have been using up to now has become a bit persistent in trying to get you to join their paid service Quizlet Plus and I can tell you that you can ignore that completely. Unfortunately some of the functions have become limited such as test and write and one of the functions called gravity has disappeared completely. 

You can still access the flashcard and match functions limitlessly though and If Quizlet is telling you you can only access the first several lines of text you can tap単語カード If you have any trouble with any of these things please let us know and we will do our best to help you out.

ですが、それらは完全に無視してかまいません。
残念ながら、「テスト」や「筆記」など一部の機能が制限され、「グラビティ」と呼ばれる機能が完全になくなりました。

ですが、「単語カード」と「マッチ」という機能は引き続き無制限に使うことができます。
Quizlet がカードの最初の いくつかにしかアクセスできない場は、「単語カード」をタップしてご利用ください。

「単語カード」であれば、全てのカードを見ることができます。
もし何か問題がある場合は、お知らせください。最善を尽くしてお手伝いいたします。

Good day everyone, how’s everything going? The simple language study advice I give 

myself and others is to “keep it simple.” Try to use the simple words and phrases we know to communicate. We should not try to over think because over thinking prevents us from responding to questions that require quick responses.

Writing and Speaking it out

I was recently asked by a student how they can improve their ability to express reasons in speech and talk for a longer time. One of the difficulties they were having was giving longer answers with full sentences.

The advice I gave was pretty simple – write a journal. In the journal, you can talk about your own day, how it went, what you did, and what you thought about it. Once you’ve done this, you can read it out aloud to yourself or in your head (both work as they both practice the speaking muscles to some degree).

This helps you practice expressing your opinions at a pace you’re comfortable with, which is your writing speed. It’ll also help give your mind the ability to see how English sentences are structured better, and by re-reading it and practicing, you’re helping your speaking ability out. Try it.

私は最近、生徒さんから、スピーチで理由を表現する能力とより長く話す能力を向上させる方法について尋ねられました。
その生徒さんが抱えていた困難の一つは、完全な文章でより長い回答をすることでした。

私がしたアドバイスは非常にシンプルです。 – 日記を書いてください。
日記の中では、自分の1日について、どのように過ごしたか、何をしたか、何を考えたかについて話すことができます。
それが完了したら、声に出して読むか、頭の中で読みます（どちらも話す筋肉をある程度鍛えるため効果的です）。

これにより、快適なペース、つまりライティングの速度で意見を述べる練習ができます。
また、英語の文章がどのように構成されているかを頭で理解するのにも役立ちます。
読み返しながら練習することで、スピーキング能力を高めることができます。

Start a learning habit

Hello everyone,

As we have mentioned a number of times in this space, a very important step to language acquisition is starting a learning habit. 

The logic behind making it into a habit is that the more you do something the easier it becomes and the better you become at it. 

I read recently a book called “Atomic Habits” which recommends us to do our best and make keeping the habit as easy as possible. For example, one thing you could do is to place your English textbook on your breakfast table so you can easily see it and study it in the morning. 

Another thing the book recommends is to start really small, it recommends us to first make a target of keeping that habit for 2 minutes each day. That is something that everyone can do right! After that we can build on that and expand. I think it’s a really good idea actually, and much much better than setting really hard unrealistic targets.

このブログで何度もお伝えしているように、言語習得の非常に重要なステップは、学習の習慣づけを始めることです。

習慣化することの背後にあるロジックは、何かをすればするほど簡単になり、上手になるということです。

私は最近、「Atomic Habits」という本を読みました。
この本では、最善を尽くし、習慣をできるだけ簡単に維持できるようにすることを勧めています。
たとえば、朝食のテーブルに英語の教科書を置けば、簡単に朝に教科書を見て、勉強することができるようになります。

この本では、非常に小さなことから始めることも推奨しています。
まず、毎日 2 分間その習慣を続けることを目標にすることをお勧めしています。それは誰もができることです！
その後、その上に構築して拡張することができます。
それは実際にとても良いアイデアだと思いますし、非常に厳しい非現実的な目標を設定するよりもはるかに優れています。

Try to limit dictionary use in class

Hello there, hope you’re taking it easy this Sunday. The study advice this week is, please

try not to over rely on the dictionary in class. Try to use the simple words you know to express yourself.  Checking your dictionary 2-3 times is ok, but more than that is too much. It makes you lose confidence, fluency and it cuts your speaking time.
It’s ok to struggle as you try to search for the right word. I think that’s the reason you come to class.

Explain what you learned

A good test for yourself to see if you understand something properly is to explain what you have learned, but in your own words.

For example, if I teach you about the meaning of a word and explain how to use it, don’t try to explain it by copying what I said. Try to explain it to yourself in your own words.

This teaches you to think on your own, and also to test if you fully understand something or not. If you’re unable to explain it clearly without copying, then you might need to study it more.

Are you busy? Fix your lessons and study time

Kensington offers students a lot of flexibility when it comes to scheduling, you can schedule your lessons on different days and at different times according to your schedule and to your wishes. 

While this service is very convenient and much loved by our students, I think that the best way to navigate your schedule if you are really busy is to fix both your lesson dates and also your study time. 

That way you will know beforehand when you take your lessons and when your study time is and you won’t arrange any work or other things you have to do during those days and times. 

Keep in mind that fixing your lesson days still doesn’t mean that you can’t change them if necessary, it just removes one of the things that you have to decide week in week out.

Make mistakes!

Hello there everyone,

You need to know this. It is totally okay to make mistakes. I often find my students apologising to me when they make even the smallest of errors and I have to say that it is totally okay, in fact it is necessary. Tripping up every now and then is not only inevitable since you are learning a new language but it helps you remember what not to do next time. I might even go as far as to say that I want  you to make mistakes because if you aren’t,it means that you aren’t experimenting with new language, you are just repeating what you have learned so far. Imagine if you had a child who learned to walk perfectly and stopped falling all the time, but they stopped developing at that point and never learned to ride a bike, throw, catch, use a computer, or any of the other skills we can learn as we grow. They would be nice and safe but never really go anywhere or do anything exciting. All of those skills take practice though and with that comes mistakes. The same can be said for your English learning, if you don’t try new things and fall on your face once in a while so get out there and start failing sometimes. You’ll feel all the better for it!

そして、それは必要な間違いです。
新しい言語を学んでいるので、ときどきつまずくことは避けられないだけでなく、次に何をしてはいけないかを思い出すのにも役立ちます。
私はあなたに何かを間違ってほしいとさえ言うかもしれません。
なぜなら、もしそうしない場合、それはあなたが新しい言語を試みているのではなく、これまでに学んだことを繰り返しているだけだからです。
完璧に歩くことを学び、いつも転ばなくなったのに、その時点で学ぶことをやめた子供を想像してみてください。
そうなれば、自転車に乗ること、投げること、キャッチすること、コンピューターを使うこと、または成長するにつれて学ぶことができるような他のスキルを習得することはできません。
完璧な状態でとどめている彼らは素晴らしく安全ですが、実際にどこかへ行ったり、エキサイティングなことをしたりすることは決してありません。
これらのスキルはすべて練習が必要であり、それには間違いが伴います。
英語の学習についても同じことが言えます。
もしあなたが新しいことに挑戦せず、少しも失敗しない状態であれば、そこから抜け出し、たまに失敗することを始めてみましょう。
あなたはその失敗のおかげで良くなったと感じるでしょう！
