食べ物について話そう！ strong or light flavour

Hello there everyone,

These two are things that my students seem to have a little trouble with when describing how something tastes. We use strong/ light flavour to describe the level of taste in something.

Examples

Miso soup is a traditional Japanese dish eaten with any meal. It usually consists of tofu and vegetables and has a light flavour.

Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish made from sheep’s innards and seasoning. It has a very distinct, strong flavour and is not to everyone’s liking.

濃い？薄い？ 味わいの強弱を表す英語にはこれをどうぞ。

皆さんこんにちは。
この２つは私の生徒さんたちが味を表現するときにちょっと苦労しているみたいですね。英語で私たちは味の強弱を言うときに、 “strong/ light flavour”「強い／軽い味」という表現を使います。

【例】
「みそ汁は日本の伝統的な一品で、三食いつでも出されます。たいていは豆腐と野菜が入っていて、軽い味わいです。」
「ハギスはスコットランドの伝統的な料理で、羊のモツと香味料で作ります。とても独特な癖の強い味をしていて好き嫌いが分かれます。」

Let’s split the bill!

Hello everyone,

Today I’d like to introduce you to a very useful expression after having dinner or drinks with someone and it’s “split the bill”. It’s very time-consuming to find out what everyone ordered and pay exactly for that (which is called go Dutch, cause apparently Dutch people were supposed to be super stingy in 17th Century Britain) so the easiest way to pay is divide the money owed by the number of people in your party.

That’s called “split the bill”

「割り勘にしよう！」って英語で言ってみたいときは　

皆さんこんにちは。

今日は、誰かと食事したり飲んだりした後に使えるとても便利な表現をお知らせします。「（均等に）割り勘にする」です。ひとりひとりが何を注文したかを確認してきっちりその額を払うのは（これは “go Dutch”「各自で払う」 といいます。17世紀の英国人から “Dutch” オランダ人が極めてケチだとどうやら思われていたせいです。）とても時間がかかるので、一番簡単な支払い方はグループの人数で請求額を割るということになります。

これが “split the bill”（割り勘にする）です。

Hello there everyone,

A lot of people ask me how to say this in English and there are three ways to say it as far as I know.

  • Conveyor belt sushi
  • sushi train
  • sushi go round

You can choose any you like but I have to say that I think sushi go round has the nicest ring to it!

皆さんこんにちは

これを英語でどう言ったらいいの、と尋ねる人がたくさんいらっしゃいます。私が知っている限りでは３つほど言い方があります。

お好きな言い方を選んでいただいていいのですが、個人的には「寿司ゴーランド」が一番ピンとくる気がします！

食べ物について話そう：有名なギリシャ料理にはどんなものがある？

What are some famous Greek foods?

Hi guys,

Did you all know that I come from Greece? Well if you didn’t, you do now. Students who hear that for the first time sometimes ask me what some famous Greek foods are.

I think the most famous Greek food is the “souvlaki”.
Souvlaki is Greece’s favourite fast food, it’s chunks of skewered pork served with chopped tomatoes and onions in pitta bread with tzatziki ( tzatziki is yogurt mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil and dill).

I love Souvlaki, it’s the food I miss the most from my country. Last time I went to Greece, I stayed there for 10 days and ate souvlaki on every day for both lunch and dinner. Yes, it’s that delicious!!

Hope you can try it somewhere or after the pandemic is over, we can open a Greek restaurant for you in Fukuoka to enjoy “souvlaki”!

有名なギリシャ料理にはどんなものがある？

こんにちは

私がギリシャ出身だとご存知でしたか？　ご存じなかった方も、これでもうチェック済みですね。初めてそれを聞いた生徒さんたちから時々、有名なギリシャ料理は何ですか、と質問されます。

一番有名なギリシャ料理は “souvlaki（スブラキ）”　だと思います。
スブラキはギリシャの一番人気のあるファーストフードです。豚肉の串焼きで刻んだトマトや玉ねぎと一緒にピタ（パン）に はさみ、“tzatziki（ザジキ＝きゅうり、ニンニク、塩、オリーブ、ディルをヨーグルトに混ぜたもの）” を添えて出されます。

私はスブラキが大好きで、ギリシャを離れているときに一番恋しくなるお国料理です。前回ギリシャに戻ったときは10日間ほどいたのですが、そのあいだ毎日、昼も夜もスブラキを食べました。ええ、それほど美味しいんですよ!!

皆さんもどこかで召し上がる機会があるといいなと思います。あるは、コロナのパンデミックが終わったら、福岡にギリシャ料理のレストランをオープンしてスブラキを楽しんでもらってもいいかもしれませんね！

Bread and Butter

Hello there everyone,

This isn’t technically a blog about food but since we are talking about money this weekend I’d like to show you this food related idiom.

Bread and Butter

This is what we use when we talk about a person’s main source of income.

Taxi drivers get a fair bit of trade from local customers but their bread and butter is pick ups to and from the airport.

食べ物について話そう！ – 「飲み放題・食べ放題」は英語では何というでしょう？

“Tabe-Hodai” “Nomi-Hodai” in English

Hello guys,

A super useful expression in Japanese is adding 放題 to something and making it unlimited. In English we say “all you can ….” or “you can ….. as much/many…. as you want”

So for an example if an Izakaya has a 食べ放題 for 4,500yen in English we would say “It’s all you can eat for 4,500yen” or “you can eat as much as you want for 4,500yen”. 飲み放題 is similar as we say “all you can drink” or “you can drink as much as you want”.

Don’t forget that we at Kensington have a 学び放題 for online group lessons. That would translate to “You can take as many classes as you want for 8,800yen/month”. That’s amazing value!!

こんにちは。

日本語できわめて便利な表現は何かに「放題」を付け加えて上限なしにするものです。英語では私たちは “all you can …” “you can … as much/many … as you want” などと言います。

ですので例えば居酒屋が4500円で食べ放題をやっているとすると、英語で私たちは “It’s all you can eat for 4,500yen (4500円で全部食べられます)”　あるいは “you can eat as much as you want for 4,500yen (4500円で欲しいだけたくさん食べられます)”と言うでしょう。飲み放題も同じように “all you can drink (全部飲めます)”　あるいは “you can drink as much as you want (欲しいだけたくさん飲めます)”と言います。

ケンジントンにもオンライングループレッスンの「学び放題」があることを忘れてはいけませんね。これを英語に訳すと “You can take as many classes as you want for 8,800yen/month (8800円で欲しいだけたくさんのレッスンが受けられます)” になるでしょう。すごくお得ですね！

食べ物について話そう！ – a full English breakfast

If you ever have the chance to visit the UK I really recommend you go to a place that serves a good full English breakfast. It usually has eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans in tomato sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes and black pudding ( a kind of blood sausage with oats) and is served with buttered toast and tea. It is totally delicious but be warned it is very filling and extremely unhealthy, it may be the reason the Brits have such short lifespans!

If you do happen to find yourself there it is usually written on the menu as “ Full English”

「フル イングリッシュブレクファスト（full English breakfast）」 とは？

もしあなたがイギリスを訪れる機会があるとしたら、本物の「フル イングリッシュブレクファスト（full English breakfast）」を出してくれるところに行かれることを心からお勧めします。これにはたいてい卵、ベーコン、ソーセージ、トマトソース煮のベイクトビーンズ、マッシュルーム、トマト、ブラックプディング（オーツ麦に血液を混ぜたソーセージの一種です）が盛られていて、バタつきのトーストと紅茶が添えられます。すばらしく美味しいのですが、とてもおなかいっぱいになりますし、きわめて不健康だとご注意しておきます。イギリス人たちの寿命があんなに短いのはそのせいかもしれませんね！

たまたまそういう場所にいあわせたら、メニューにはたいてい「Full English」と書いてありますから。

食べ物について話そう！ – Making a good mojito 

Hi guys,
I have been spending way too much time at home recently and so I decided to spend my time a little productively so I learnt how to make a couple of cocktails. The Whiskey Smash and the Mojito!

Today I’ll talk to you about how to prepare a really great Mojito!

1. Put 6- 8 spearmint leaves in a highball glass.

2. Add 25ml of fresh lime juice, 15ml of syrup and 60ml of white rum

3. Stir lightly to combine the ingredients. Add crushed ice to the glass until halfway full. Using a spoon, very lightly pull some of the mint up from the bottom of the glass. Add more crushed ice (until the top of the glass) and insert a straw.

4. Serve with some mint on top and enjoy a perfect drink!!!

皆さん、こんにちは。
私は最近、ずっと多くの時間を家で過ごしているので、自分の時間を少し生産的に使おうと決心して、いくつかカクテルの作り方を覚えました。ウイスキースマッシュとモヒートです！

今日は皆さんに本当に美味しいモヒートの作り方をお伝えします。

１．6－8枚のスペアミントの葉をハイボールグラスに入れます。

２．搾りたてのライム果汁25ml、シロップ15ml、ホワイトラム60mlを加えます。

３．材料がなじむように軽くかき混ぜます。クラッシュアイスをグラスの半分まで入れます。スプーンを使ってそっとグラスの底からミントの葉を何枚か取り出します。さらにクラッシュアイスを（グラスの縁まで）加えて、ストローをさします。

４．ミントの葉を何枚かトップに添えてできあがりです。さあ完璧なカクテルをお楽しみください‼

Hi there,

There are many ways to say when food has gone past its best and probably shouldn’t be eaten.  They include

go off

go bad

spoil

go past its best

Example

“I wouldn’t eat that ham if I were you. It smells like it’s gone off.”

“We bought that jam more than a couple of years ago. You better check that it hasn’t spoiled.”
