How to say “gomasaba” in English and Jaimie’s long epicurean journey in Japan!

Hello there everyone,

First of all, I’d just like to address one question that I often seem to get asked and that is how do we say “gomasaba” in English? Well, it’s mackerel served with sesame and soy sauce and it just happens to be one of the few remaining Japanese dishes that I haven’t got used to yet so let me tell you a little bit about my journey to appreciating Japanese cuisine.

One of the topics we often cover in our classes is food. This is of course because eating is one thing we all do and love, but also I feel that the Japanese are very proud of their cuisine and are always keen to talk about it with people from other countries. It seems that most of my students seem to have a huge amount of information on what food or dish comes from what prefecture, the differences in what ingredients are used and even what different names they are given. It’s not such a huge topic of interest back home for sure.

I’m not sure how other people feel about Japanese food but for me it was definitely an acquired taste though once you get to like it, you love it.  As a Brit I was kind of used to the meat and two veg approach that many households take to home cooking. That being said,  both my parents are excellent cooks and I developed my love of Asian foods, namely Indian and Chinese from them, so I was really excited to get a chance to try Japanese food when I came here. Unfortunately, in the beginning at least I was extremely disappointed because everything seemed to be too raw, too fatty, too slimy, too soft, or too bland. It took a very long time for me to get used to it but now I love almost everything I eat here with only a few remaining hurdles left which I’ll tell you about later.

One of my funniest memories from my early days in Japan, Yamaguchi to be exact, was from my wife’s parents’ home. They have run their own sushi shop there for over 50 years now and when I arrived I was greeted with a slap up meal of sushi with the entire extended family eagerly awaiting my reaction to every bit of food I ate. In all honesty, I really couldn’t stomach it and had difficulty swallowing some,  but I had to put on a massive smile and eat each and every slice all the while giving my compliments to the chef! I was about to marry his daughter after all!

Nowadays, I’ve gone full circle and even though I love the food in Britain it sometimes disagrees with me a bit and can be too greasy, heavy, oily, fatty, or a bit too strong flavoured. I suppose you just can’t have everything can you?

As I mentioned earlier there are still a few dishes that no matter how hard I try, I just can’t get to grips with and no, natto (fermented soy beans) isn’t one of them so no stereotypes please.

surioroshi yamaimo- grated yams

shirako-soft roe

namako-sea cucumber

uni-sea urchin

nama tamago- raw egg

Those are the big 5 and as you can see they all have similar soft or slimy traits that no matter what I do, I can’t look past. I’ll keep trying but it’s been almost twenty years so I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the day I say I love it if I were you!

The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS
・「IELTS Trainer

Introduction to Ielts

Hello there everyone, as you can see we have made a bit of a change to how we write our blogs. We think that quality over quantity is probably the way forward and even though I’m sure you were overjoyed to read our daily blogs I think you’ll find our newer ones more informative and interesting, and hopefully they will give you even better advice on how to further improve your English. For the last couple of years I have been teaching IELTS preparation classes and I have to say I think it is definitely one of the more involved and interesting tests to teach and a really good way for students of intermediate or even advanced level to gauge their English level and work towards its betterment.

What is IELTS

There are two types of IELTS tests, general and academic. The former is used for people wishing to move to another country to live or work or to enter college and focuses more on everyday situations in the writing and reading sections and the academic is aimed at people planning to enter either university or graduate schools overseas with a focus on topics more suitable for anyone planning do higher learning in a foreign academic institution.

Why should I try IELTS?

For me the main reason I would study for Ielts is because in order to prepare for it you really need to cover a wide range of topics which are both practical and somewhat academic in nature meaning you will automatically expand your knowledge of English whilst studying for this test. It is a good motivator to have a goal to work towards and IELTS is certainly tough which is why I recommend it to our students from intermediate to higher level. Trying IELTS from beginner level is rather like trying to walk before you crawl. You will need to push yourself to read newspaper, magazine, or online articles covering a number of subject like tech, history, science, culture, and more, become accustomed to practical skills like writing emails and letters, learn how to write well structured essays, and have to engage in different forms of questions from questions and answers to giving short speeches. That is a lot to prepare for and will give you a chance to cover some issues that are unlikely to come up in regular English classes.

What Materials Should I Use?

Unlike a lot of other tests, the official IELTS site has a lot of information on what you should do to prepare for the test and offers a huge amount of free advice on what you can do to up your score. There is of course endless material online but if you are looking for a really good textbook then we always use the Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS and IELTS trainer in our classes.

How do I Take IELTS Classes in Kensington?

If you are planning to study overseas, or live abroad sometime in the future then this test is a very good choice for you. We offer private IELTS lessons in which we will give you the know-how on how to prepare for each section of the test. We usually conduct these classes on a 100 minute basis rather than the usual 50 mins because we need to spend a good amount of time on at least two sections per class. Reading or writing homework is assigned each time. If you need to take the test for any of the reasons above or would like to use it as a way to expand upon what you have already learned please contact me for details. I think it is definitely the most comprehensive test out there and the best way to judge your English level.

In my next blog  I’ll be giving you some tips on how to up your score on the IELTS speaking test.

For those of you who are interested in IELTS why don’t you prepare for IELTS with a specialist teacher in Kensington. Here is more information about our courses.

Business English
In the Bag

Hello there everyone and happy Monday!

Today’s wonderful business English expression is in the bag which means that something you want to get is pretty much secured and guaranteed to happen for you.

Example

I think with that presentation you gave our contract with Tesla is pretty much in the bag. Elon certainly seemed impressed and heaped a lot of praise on you when we spoke over the phone.

I can tell you that we are still ironing out the details and have one or two things to consider but your resume and your performance at the interview pretty much mean that you have the position you applied for in the bag.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Identify your bad habits and fix them

After a fairly lengthy hiatus due to time restraints stemming from covid issues we have restarted the adult team meetings and one phrase that has come up from our most eloquent teacher Denny is “fossilised errors”. This means mistakes that students make that haven’t been properly rectified in the past and have now become habitual and quite possibly the student is unaware of. They often take the form of errors with prepositions or grammar and although they have become habitual, they are of course  fixable if regularly pointed out and the student makes a conscious effort to rectify them in class. Of course this problem can only be dealt with if it is understood by the student so I suggest you ask your teacher if there are any common errors that you make that need fixing. It goes without saying that we always try to correct these problems anyway but especially in a group class it is a little difficult to stay100 percent on top of things all the time. Please feel free to ask us any time about how to fix these kind of common problems but in the meantime if you are taking private classes, one way to get rid of them is to start doing writing homework because this gives you more of a chance to think about what you want to say and it is also easier to see what errors you commonly make when your writing is corrected by you teacher.

Jaimie

「Kick a habit」

Everyday English
Kick a habit

Hello there everyone,

Since the topic for this weekend’s class is new year’s resolutions I thought this might be a good expression for you. To kick a habit very simply means to give up on a bad habit.

Example:

I can’t believe I’m still smoking at the age of 45. I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to kick the habit and always seem to fail. This year for sure I’m quitting for good.

I was drinking so heavily last year and I spent so much money in the pub but this year I’ve cut down considerably and I think by the end of this year I’ll have kicked the habit for good.

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Looking back on 2022

Hello again!

If you have been in Kensington Eikaiwa for a while you will have probably taken one of our seasonal classes called looking back on the year and I have to say that at the end of each year I am usually a bit disappointed with myself! I always take a negative view of how I spend each year and think that I should have done more, drunk less, saved more money, been nicer, travelled more, and this that and the next thing, but this year all that has come to a stop. It’s time to be positive and focus on the good points from the year instead.

I did a lot last year. In March I took a trip to Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto and was able to meet up with one of our former staff members Rina ,who despite being pregnant , still looked as youthful and healthy as always and was kind enough to take me out and about and show me around Osaka a bit. I travelled to Miyazaki with my family in May, went on my disastrous but still fun trip to Fuji in July, and even made a brief stop in the UK at the end of October so all in all I’d say that was a pretty good year.

My son is now in first grade of junior high and is, if he keeps growing like this, going to a very big man indeed just like his uncle and grandfather and my daughter is now in fourth grade of primary school and has started hip hop dance classes and learning the guitar with our new teacher Patrick in the Yakuin school as her teacher. Where does the time go? It really seems like yesterday that they were just babies. I succeeded in losing a lot of weight last year ( it was about time) even though my attempts to cut down on drinking beer have failed miserably!

All in all, I’d say that the positives outweighed the negatives last year and from this year on when the end of the year comes I’m going to be focusing on what went right rather than moping about complaining into my wine glass about what went wrong!

Jaimie

今週のレッスントピック – New Year’s Resolutions(新年の抱負)

This week’s subject
New Year’s Resolutions

Hello there everyone and a very happy new year to all of you from everyone at Kensington! I hope you had a nice relaxing break.

Our first topic of the year for our group lessons is as alway “New Year’s Resolutions” and we will be discussing what kind of resolutions people make, what resolutions you have made in the past and how successful you were in keeping them, what your resolutions are for this year and how long or likely you are to keep them, and finally practicing how to relay information given by one person to another using pronouns and reported speech.

It’s a fun lesson and one I always look forward to teaching!

See you in class,

Jaimie

New Year’s Resolutions(新年の抱負)

Test prep

Hello there everyone.
This isn’t really so much test prep advice but please remember that Kensington is closed from the 23rd of December to the 3rd of January and will also be closed on the 9th due to it being a public holiday. The next Eiken tests are from the end of January and the beginning of February so you don’t have much time to study with us before then. I suggest that you do a good thorough review of everything you have done so far, go back through your workbook and make sure you write down new vocabulary, phrases, and grammar, and finally do a couple of full past tests to make sure you have the timing for the vocabulary, reading, and writing sections perfect.

Good luck on the tests!

Jaimie
