Hey guys,

Here are some really useful expressions for the workplace, and they’re all related to this week’s topic: ‘Rules’.

Amendment –  An amendment is a minor change in something, usually in a document, or legislation. it’s very commonly used in those two things.
‘I made an amendment to the document you gave me’. 

Stipulation – A stipulation is a condition within an agreement. If I agree to sell my car to you, I might want you to pay by cash. Paying by cash would be a stipulation.
‘There is a stipulation in the contract that we need to address’

Contractual obligation – This is similar to a stipulation, but obligation is something you have to do, like a rule. One example might be wearing a uniform at work. If it is an obligation in your contract, then you have no choice.
‘I’m contractually obligated to work another 2 weeks before I can start my new job’

Deadline – A deadline is a time in the future where some kind of work must be finished by. Most of us have deadlines in some form or another, and we have to stick to them if we want to do our jobs well.
‘The deadline for my project is coming up soon, I don’t know if I’ll have enough time to get it done.’

Amendment
通常は書類や法律の中の小さな変更。とても一般的に使われています。

‘I made an amendment to the document you gave me’.
あなたがくれた書類を修正しています。

Stipulation
合意における条件。
私があなたに車を売る事を同意するには、現金での支払いを希望するでしょう。この場合、現金での支払いというのが合意における条件にあたります。

‘There is a stipulation in the contract that we need to address’
契約合意の書類には、住所が必要です。

Contractual obligation
契約上の義務。これはstipulationと似ていますが、規約の様に、あなたがしなければならない事を意味します。
1つの例としては、職場での制服もそうかもしれません。もしあなたの契約書に契約上の義務があったなら、あなたには選択肢はありません。

‘I’m contractually obligated to work another 2 weeks before I can start my new job’
私は新しい別の仕事を始める前に2週間は働かなければはいけない

Deadline
締切。必ずそこまでに仕事を終わらせなければいけない未来の日時。
私達の多くは何らかの形の締切を持っていて、仕事をうまくやって行きたいならこれを守らなければいけません。

‘The deadline for my project is coming up soon, I don’t know if I’ll have enough time to get it done.’
私のプロジェクトの締切はもうすぐです。十分な時間があるかどうかわかりません。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Describing things

Hey guys, 

As this week’s lesson topic is ‘rules’, it got me thinking about the ‘rules’ we have to follow when speaking English. English is a very old and mixed up language, so sometimes there are some rules that we still follow today, but really there is no logical reason to. 

An easy example is spelling. Some words in English have letters that you wouldn’t expect. Any strange spelling you see probably used to make sense, when it was first spelt. But now it doesn’t, and we didn’t change it, so we have odd parts of the language that we just have to remember. 

The reason I bring this up is I want to encourage you to not worry too much over the rules of English. Of course they are important, but you will learn them in an organic way by taking in a lot of English material, and practicing as much as you can with speaking. This is particularly true of English, as there are a lot of weird, old rules that can actually trip you up, if you focus too much on them. 

Talk as much as you can in lessons, consume as much English material as you enjoy, and use the language that you hear or see(from your teacher, a movie, video game, book, etc).

今週のレッスントピック「規則」は私に、英語を話す時に守らなければいけないルールについて考えさせました。
英語はとても古く、様々な言語が混ざり合っているので、時には今でも守らなければいけないいくつかのルールがあります。しかし実際、そこには理論的な理由は無かったりするのです。

簡単な例としては、綴りがあります。
いくつかの英単語は予想もしないアルファベットを使用します。あなたが目にするどんな奇妙なスペルにも、おそらく一番最初に綴られた時の、何らかの理由があったのでしょう。
今となってはその理由は関係ありませんが、私達はそれを変えなかったので、言語の奇妙な部分をただ覚えなければいけないのです。

私がこの話題を選んだ理由は、皆さんが英語のルールを心配し過ぎないで欲しいからです。もちろんルールは大切ですが、皆さんは多くの英語の教材や、できるだけ多くの会話練習から、本質的に学ぶことができるはずです。
特に英語に関して、これは真実です。もしあなたがこれらを気にし過ぎていたら、沢山の奇妙で古いルールはあなたをつまづかせてしまうでしょう。

レッスンではできるだけたくさん話して下さい。あなたが楽しめる英語の教材をたくさん使って下さい。そして講師や映画、ビデオゲームや本などで見たり聞いたりした英語を使ってみましょう。

Laws in England

Many countries still have some very odd laws, because laws take a very long time to change, or die out. For example, in London it is illegal to carry a ladder down the street, though most policemen probably don’t even know that law exists, so you’re probably safe in doing so. That particular law is almost 200 years old. The oldest law in England, that is still active today, is around 750 years old.

In England, things often seem to move at a glacial pace, and I think a big reason for that is cultural. We Brits are traditionalists, we don’t like to change, and we very much value vintage. I think Japan is similar in that way.

The Magna Carta is a very old royal charter in England. A Royal charter is a kind of official document. The Magna Carta was made 800 years ago, and 3 parts of the charter are still in effect today!

多くの国々で、いまだにとても奇妙な法律が存在しています。なぜなら法律を変えるにはとても長い時間がかかり、立ち消えてしまったりするからです。
例えばロンドンでは、路上ではしごを運ぶ事は違法です。でも実際には殆どの警察官はこの法律の存在すら知らないかも知れません。だからきっとあなたがそうしても大丈夫です。
この独特な法律は200年前にできました。そして750年前に作られたイングランド最古の法律は今日でも有効です。

イングランドでは、物事は氷河の様なゆっくりとしたペースで動いている様です。これは文化的な背景が大きな要因になっていると思います。私達イギリス人は伝統的を重んじ、変化を好まず古い物に大きな価値を感じます。日本もこれと似た所があると思います。

マグナカルタはイングランドのとても古い王室憲章で、公文書の一種です。マグナカルタは800年前に作られ、3つの部分は現在でもいまだに有効なんですよ！

‘Bending the rules’

Hey guys, 

Today I have a really common expression that relates to this week’s topic: ‘rules’.
Here are some example sentences first:

‘You’re normally not allowed to take an exam if you arrive late, but because of the student’s excuse, his teacher bent the rules for him.’

‘The management team all bend the rules to give themselves more vacation time and bigger bonuses.’

In these examples ‘bend the rules’ means that you are not following the rules very well, but you are also not breaking them, so what you are doing is kind of in the middle of good and bad. But ‘bending the rules’ usually suggests that somebody is doing something that they shouldn’t, perhaps in a sneaky or clever way.

Hope this helps guys, I’m going to go and eat some cheesecake. I’m on a diet at the moment, but sometimes it’s fun to bend the rules! 🙂

今日は、今週のトピック「規則」に関連したとても一般的な表現を紹介したいと思います。
まずは例文をいくつか挙げてみます。

もし遅刻した場合、通常は試験を受ける事は許可されません。しかしその生徒の理由によって教師は生徒のために規則を曲げてくれました。

マネジメントチームは自身の休暇とより多くのボーナスのために規則を曲げている。

これらの例にある「bend the rules」とは規則にきちんと従っていないが、規則を破ってもいない事を意味しています。つまりあなたのやっていることは、良くも悪くもないという事です。
しかし「bending the rules」は通常、誰かがおそらくずる賢く頭の良い方法で、やるべきではないことを行なっていることを示唆しています。

Rules

Hey guys!
This week’s subject is ‘Rules’. 

In life there are many rules that we create or follow, be that at work, home, or as members of the general public. We often use quite specific grammar when talking about rules, for example: ‘We can’t have pets in our building.’ or ‘I have to wear a uniform’. 

In the level 2 classes we’ll also go over some potential situations, such as ‘If you could change an age limit, what would it be?’ The ‘if’ and ‘would’ are the key words to remember in potential sentences, try not to forget them!

今週のサブジェクトは「規則」です。
生活する上で、仕事や家、一般社会の一員として、私達は沢山の規則を作り守らなければいけません。
規則について話す時はかなり具体的な文法を使うことがあります。

例えば、
‘We can’t have pets in our building.- 私達のビルではペットを飼うことはできません’
 ‘I have to wear a uniform – 制服を着なければいけません’

レベル2のレッスンでは、「もし年齢制限を変更できるとしたら、何をしたいですか？」の様な、いくつかの可能性がある状況についても話します。
「If」と「would」は可能性を表す文章の中で、覚えておくべきキーワードです。忘れないようにして下さい！

What we are doing in Kensingtona
Summer School

Hello everyone!

Kensington’s first summer school came to a close this week. The event, which ran over two weeks, was a great success. We had tons of fun, and the students thrived with coming to an English school up to 5 days a week. 

The students that did come will all be taking an important entrance test for Futaba Elementary School’s English programme in November. It was great to spend a lot more time with them, and give them a taste of a more immersive English experience. They had a blast and did so well, we’re all really proud of how far they’ve come already.

ケンジントンの初めてのサマースクールが今週で終わりを迎えます。2週間に渡って行われたこのイベントは素晴らしい成功を納めることができました。子供たちは1週間のうち5日間も英会話学校に通うことで、とても楽しみながら成長することができました。

これらは生徒たちにとって、11月の雙葉小学校の英語プログラムの入学試験に向けてとても重要な経験となりました。彼らはとても楽しい時間を過ごし、良く頑張りました。

Reputations

Reputations in business are a lot like stereotypes. Your reputation is what people think about your business, so it’s an important word to remember. Many companies go to great lengths to create, and preserve, a great reputation. They may focus on customer service, product quality, environmentally-friendly schemes, etc. In English it’s common to talk about reputation like this:

‘Apple has a reputation for good customer service’
‘Patagonia is known for making things that last’

You can also talk about your own company in the same way:

‘We are known for/ We have a reputation for excellent service’
‘I want us to be better known for our eco-friendly procedures’
‘We should promote our reputation for great staff benefits more’

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Describing things

Hey guys, 

Not many of our students practice describing things in our classes. It’s a really helpful skill to develop, as it’s often more useful in ‘real-life’ situations. Describing also allows you to practice speaking more English, it requires you to think more in English, and to remember extra words. The point is not to describe something perfectly, the point is to use the English you know to continue the conversation. Even hard words like ‘商工会議所’ can be described in part: ‘government’ ‘for money’ ‘big building’ ‘many people work there’. 

Here are some examples:
ムカデ “It’s a long, disgusting bug.” “It’s a tiny thing with lots of legs.”
港 “It’s a place for boats!”
首相 “He is the government leader” “He’s super important. Always on the TV, he talks about Japan a lot!”

描写する

やあ皆さん、

レッスン中に物の描写を練習をしている生徒さんはそう多くないと思いますが、これは英語の上達や、実際に生活する環境で本当に訳に立つスキルです！
描写することはあなたがより英語を話すことの練習にもなります。そのためには、もっと英語で考え、追加の単語を覚えることが必要です。

描写のポイントは何かを完璧に表現することではなく、知っている英語を使って会話を続けることです。
例えば、商工会議所の様な難しい単語でも、「お金のための政府」「大きな建物」「沢山の人々が働いている」の様に部分的に描写することができます。

いくつかの例を挙げてみましょう。
ムカデ…長くて、気持ち悪い昆虫。細くて沢山の足がある。
港…船のための場所！
首相…政府のリーダー　とても重要な人　いつもテレビに出ている　日本について沢山のことを話す。

England stereotypes

Ah England, stereotypical England. Bad food, worse teeth, and an unrelenting lack of emotion. These are some of the most common stereotypes of England. And like most stereotypes, they are false. In one study on oral hygiene, England was actually ranked 5th in the world, take that 9th-placed America!

What interests me is where did all these stereotypes come from?
Unsurprisingly, many stereotypes of various countries arose in the World Wars.
A global war meant that many people were hearing global news on a much bigger scale than ever before. Nationalism across the globe had never been higher. Rumours and propaganda flowed freely.
War rations, and the low quality of food after the war, are a big reason why many people consider English food bad. Even though now London is often regarded as one of the food capitals of the world.
‘Keep calm and carry on’ is a very famous poster from England in World War II. It might suggest a lack of emotion from the English people when read, but ironically a lot of English people at the time actually hated war posters like this one, and they were not famous at all at the time, anyway.

I always find it interesting to trace back the history of stereotypes to the source, it often reveals many misconceptions. I think some stereotypes may be true, most at least have a hint of truth to them. But all of them, I think, are largely inaccurate. I hope you found it interesting, too!

戦時中の配給や、戦後の質の悪い食事は、イギリスの食事は美味しくないと多くの人が考える大きな要因になっています。しかし現在ではロンドンはよく世界の食事のメッカとされます。
‘Keep calm and carry on’ とは第2次世界大戦中の、イギリス発のとても有名なポスターです。 これを読むと、イギリス人は無感情に思えるかもしれません、しかし、皮肉なことに、実際には多くのイギリス人はこの様な戦時中のポスターが嫌っており、当時は全く有名ではありませんでした。

私はいつもステレオタイプの歴史を元に振り返ることを楽しんでいますし、結果、誤解を解くこともあります。
いくつかのステレオタイプは真実で、少なくとも殆どは真実を知るヒントになります。しかし、それらはすべて確実では無いと私は思います。

‘Tar with the same brush’

Hey guys. If you ever feel like somebody is making negative assumptions about you, based on people you’re related to or a group you’re associated with, then I have an idiom for you!

“Liam, your sister is so lazy, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were to.”
“Don’t tar me with the same brush, I’m not lazy!”

“Football supporters all get tarred with the same brush when there’s trouble.”

This is a particularly useful phrase for our topic this week (Stereotypes). We can use it whenever we feel someone is being unfairly judged, based on a group they belong to(including nationality), or a person they know.
