クリスマス&ニューイヤーについて話そう

This week’s subject
Christmas and New Year

Hello again!

I honestly can’t believe that I’m writing this again, Christmas really seems to come around more and more quickly every year! I wonder if you feel the same…?

The topic for this weekend is Christmas and New Year at our schools in Yakuin, Nishijin, Akasaka, and online.

We will be talking about Christmas and new year traditions, how you usually spend time at the end of the year, what you did last year, and how you plan on spending the holiday season this year. In the higher level classes we will be discussing some of the differences between Christmas and new year in Japan and overseas and how the celebration has changed over time.

Sounds pretty good to me!

年始のミーティング

What we are doing in Kensington

Beginning of year meetings.

Hi there everyone, as you know we are always trying to improve our lessons, services, and system, and in order to do so we have regular one-on-one meetings with our teachers and staff to get feedback on what we could do better. We are still a relatively small school and are very open to suggestions, comments, requests, or even criticism since they all contribute to us doing an even better job so if you have any things you’d like to see from us in 2022 please feel free to let us know, and we will put the idea up for discussion. Your opinion matters to us just as much as our teachers and staff, so don’t be afraid to ask!

Look forward to hearing from you soon!

手を抜く/省略する

Business English
Cutting Corners

“Cutting corners” is a useful phrase in business when we refer to removing things or reducing costs when producing content. If someone is “cutting corners” in a project, it means they are removing some stuff in it in order to it to be completed faster, or maybe because they are trying to reduce costs.lk

Cutting corners can be positive or negative, depending on the context, but it basically means – you’re reducing the time it takes for something to be completed, or reducing the amount of content it has. Or quality!

ビジネス英会話
手を抜く/省略する

「Cutting corners」はビジネスシーンにおいて、何かを制作する時に物事を省いたりコストを削ったりすることを指す便利な表現です。もし誰かがプロジェクトの中で「Cutting corner」しているなら、期間を短縮するため、または恐らくコストを削減するために何かを省略しているという事です。
「Cutting corners」は文脈によって、ポジティブにもネガティブにも使えます。しかし基本的には、時間を削る、またはコンテンツの量を減らす、もしくは質を下げる事を意味します。

簡素化できれば、言う事なし!

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
If you can simplify, you’ve nailed it

A very powerful skill that is important to have is the ability to simplify your language or simplify an explanation.

I find that if you have difficulty explaining something to someone, you haven’t quite fully understood it yet. Once you’re able to explain it simply, with efficient word usage and ease of understanding, it means you have a very strong understanding of the concept.

It’s important to also apply this mindset to your English communication. A common observation with many students is, when asked a question, they tend to apply far too many words to their explanation, and complicate things.

Don’t worry about using so many adjectives! Think of they key words, think of how something is and why, and use simple grammar. Trust me on this, if you can do that, then your ability to apply more complicated language on top of it will massively increase over time.

Take care!
Denny

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
“The Free Man”

Heya, Denny here. Happy Saturday.

Today I’m talking a little bit about my own philosophy on life and living. I read a lot of philosophy and have thought about it a lot, and something I hold very, very dearly to my heart, as a principle, is the idea of freedom.

The way I think of it, to be free is to be alive and able to do the things you want to do in life. This doesn’t mean do bad or good things, it just means the freedom to choose. It also means not being a slave or master to anyone. It’s a very independent kind of mindset, but I think freedom is absolutely the most important thing in a human being’s life, and we often forget how important it is in a society, too.

To be free means to walk any path you want, but that also means to accept the consequences of your choices. It can be a frustrating and difficult path, but I think it means you will have a live well lived, based on your choices alone. You can live based off other people’s advice, but those choices aren’t really “yours”. I don’t think it’s satisfying, honestly.

Little bit of philosophy today!
Denny

「Sometime」は便利な表現

Everyday English
“Sometime”

The word “sometime” can be applied in many different contexts when using English, so it’s a useful word to take into account and learn!

For example, you can say “let’s meet up sometime” as a way to say that you want to meet in the future, but you’re unsure when – basically, you haven’t confirmed your schedule yet. You can also modify it to describe things you sometimes do. “I play games sometimes” or “I sometimes make pancakes for breakfast” means that it is an action you do infrequently.

Sometime can be a applied in so many ways, like many English words, so it’s a handy one to take into account. You should use it..sometime!

教育について考える

This week’s subject
Education

Hi, Denny here.

Education is a big deal to me and is basically my primary career choice as of this moment. I usually focus on fundamental aspects of it though and from a philosophical perspective – after all, philosophy is my greatest passion!

I usually think about how we form language and why we do it, then consider how we can teach better understanding those things. I wrote a very small book about it a few years ago which is available on Amazon. It’s only in English and very complex, but it defines language from a different perspective – it’s not a tool for communication primarily, but a tool of cognition. Try to think of things without language. Apart from visual thought, you can’t!

It’s fascinating stuff, and a lot of that thought I apply to my lessons.

Denny

I can say for a fact that we’re making sure we’re ready to teach Eiken – ranging from Grade 4 up to Grade 2 – and also polishing our already excellent courses that we usually teach under our curriculum.

I hope you have a wonderful new year and enjoy learning English, Eiken and many other things with us in 2022. Thanks for all the great moments teaching you!
