クリスマスキャロルを聴いたり、クリスマス映画を見たり（私のお気に入りのクリスマス映画のリンク）、美味しい飲み物を飲んだり、美味しい食事をしたり、愛する人たちと良い時間を過ごす時です。

With Christmas just around the corner, there is a really nice English expression that in my mind perfectly captures the spirit of celebration: “Eat, drink, and be merry.”  In this blog we are going to delve deeper into its meaning and usage. 

Origin and Meaning

“Eat, drink, and be merry” is a jovial expression often used to encourage others to enjoy themselves and celebrate without reservation. The saying is based on verses from the Bible, and basically means that we should enjoy life as much as possible because it will be over soon. Therefore, it’s ideal for festive occasions, especially during Christmas gatherings, when people come together to share good food, drinks, and joyous moments. 

Example Sentences:

Some common situations where you might hear or use this expression are festive gatherings, toasts or well wishing, parties, etc….

  • – As we gather around the table for Christmas dinner, let’s eat, drink, and be merry!

Christmas with my Family

Eat, drink and be merry perfectly encapsulates how I feel about Christmas too. I think many of my Japanese students assume that Christmas is a religious holiday but while it may be so for some people, it’s not so for me. It’s a perfect time to spend in the warmth of your home with your family, listening to some Christmas carols, watching some Christmas movies (This is the link to my favourite Xmas movies!), drinking nice drinks, eating nice food and having a good time with the people you love.

不正直な商人たちが価値のある豚を価値の低い猫に取り替えて袋に入れて売ることが時々ありました。

私が子どもの頃、私の故郷ウガンダでは、クリスマスプレゼントはクリスマス当日(12月25日)に受け取り、翌日(12月26日)まで開けませんでした。
12月26日はボクシングデーと呼ばれる日で、一部の国ではこの日にクリスマスプレゼントを開けます。
だから私たちは何をもらったのかを知るために24時間待ちました。
しかし、ときどき兄姉たちが秘密をもらして (let the cat out the bag)、ボクシングデー前に中身を知ることもありました！

In a week or so it will be Christmas 2023, can you believe it! Have you ordered the Xmas presents yet? For me, I have ordered them but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they are delivered when I’m home to receive them. If my wife or one of my daughters receives them…the cat will be let out of the bag!
Let the cat out the bag? That’s what I’ll be explaining in the following few paragraphs… 

Meaning and origin of “Let the cat out of the bag”

The idiom “let the cat out of the bag” means to accidentally reveal a secret or disclose something that was supposed to be kept secret or confidential.
It’s thought that this idiom may have originated in the medieval times when dishonest traders would sometimes replace valuable pigs with less valuable cats and sell them in bags. If someone let the cat out of the bag before the deal was done, the scam would be revealed. 

Usage examples

Friend 1: Guess what! Sayaka is planning a surprise party for Tom’s birthday next week!

Friend 2: Shh! Don’t let the cat out of the bag! Tom isn’t supposed to know!

Dad: We’re taking the kids to Disneyland this Xmas but it’s a surprise. Please don’t let the cat out of the bag, okay?

Mom: Of Course I won’t. I want to see their surprised faces when we tell them on Xmas morning!

Personal experience

When I was a kid in my home country Uganda, we received Xmas presents on Xmas day (December 25th) but we didn’t open them until the next day (December 26th). December 26th is called Boxing Day. The day when people open their Xmas presents in some countries.  So we waited for 24 hours to find out what we’d got. But sometimes our elder brothers and sisters would let the cat out the bag and tell us before Boxing Day!

In Conclusion, the idiom is used in many situations, to caution or warn  someone not to reveal a secret prematurely. That’s why I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the Xmas presents I ordered for my family will be delivered when I’m home, so I can hide them until Xmas morning. If my wife or one of my daughters receive them, they’ll likely know what I’ve bought them for Xmas before Xmas and…the cat will be out of the bag!

今日のテーマはオーストラリアのクリスマスです。
オーストラリアでのクリスマスのことを「Christmas Down Under」と言います。
オーストラリアがある南半球は12月に夏になるため、世界中の他の地域のクリスマスとはかなり異なります。
また、家のイルミネーション、バーベキュー、おかしなスラングなど、文化的にも大きく異なるため、今日のブログでそれを探ってみましょう。

 

Aussieのクリスマスのスラング

「Aussie」とは、「Australian (オーストラリア人、オーストラリアの)」を表すスラングです。
また、「Christmas (クリスマス)」をオーストラリアのスラングで「Chrissie」と言います。
オーストラリアはクリスマスを中心に、外国人に混乱を招くようなスラングをよく使います。
たとえば、このようなスラングを使います。

多くの「Aussies」は「Chrissie」に「barbie」をしたり、「cold one」を飲んで「cozzies」で「dip」に行くのが好きです。

何を言っているか理解できましたか？
おそらく理解できなかったでしょう。
単語の意味はこちらです。

  • ⚫︎ Barbie = barbecue
  • ⚫︎ Chrissie = Christmas
  • ⚫︎ Cold one = cold beer
  • ⚫︎ Dip = swim

私のオーストラリアのクリスマスの思い出

オーストラリアにはしばらく帰ってないのですが、オーストラリアでのクリスマスの良い思い出は、子どもの頃に「Carols by Candlelight」を見ていたことです。ほぼ毎年、家族とテレビで見ていました。
クリスマスの日はたくさんのプレゼントを開け、親戚が家に来てプレゼント交換をし、その後はビーチか自宅のバルコニーでバーベキューをしました。

クリスマスは通常とても晴れていて暑いため、全体的に素晴らしい時間です。
いつかオーストラリアのクリスマスを体験することをおすすめします。
ただし、非常に暑くなるので日焼け止めは忘れずに。

Chrissie “Down Under”

Today’s topic is about “Christmas Down Under”, which is a term to refer to Christmas in Australia, which is quite different from the rest of the world due to the southern hemisphere being in summer in December. It’s also culturally very different with lots of things like housing illuminations, barbecues and strange slang, so let’s explore that in today’s blog.

Aussie Chrissie Slang

If you’re not sure what “Aussie” means, it’s a shortened form for “Australian”, and “Chrissie” refers to “Christmas”.

In fact, Aussies tend to have a lot of slang that can be confusing for people coming into the country, especially around Christmas. A lot of Aussies, for example, like to have a barbie during Chrissie while opening a cold one and going for a dip with their cozzies.

Did you understand that sentence at all? Probably not, but to give some idea of what some of those words mean:

  • – Barbie = barbecue
  • – Chrissie = Christmas
  • – Cold one = cold beer
  • – Dip = swim
  • – Cozzies = swimming underwear

So, to give a normal English translation:

“Australians like to have a barbecue for Christmas as well as drinking cold beer and going for a swim in their swimsuits”.

There are many more slang terms, but that’ll make the blog very long.

Illuminations and Carols

Australia tends to have a lot of illuminations during Christmas, particularly in wealthy neighbourhoods. People would walk around these neighbourhoods, looking at all the meticulously designed illuminated houses and also sometimes “judge” which ones are the best. The best illuminations get prizes sometimes. It’s really cool.

Another popular event on Christmas eve is “Carols by Candlelight”. It’s a kind of concert held in a national park or stadium where many famous Aussie singers go to sing famous Christmas carols with crowds sitting by with candles. A lot of families tend to go to this event and it’s also live on TV, so it really sets the mood for Christmas.

Memories of Aussie Chrissie

While I haven’t been to Australia in a long time, I have fond memories of Carols by Candlelight as a child. I used to watch it on TV with my family almost every year, and on Christmas day I would open a lot of presents, have my extended family visit us and exchange gifts, then we’d have a barbecue, either at the beach or at home on the balcony.

Christmas is also usually very sunny and hot, so it’s a nice time all round. I highly recommend Australian Christmas sometime, it’s very nice, but be sure to wear sunscreen as it gets REALLY hot.

この時期に私が好きなことの一つは食べ物です。
そこで今日は「pig out (食べすぎる、大食いする)」という表現をご紹介します。

 

「pig out」の意味

「pig out」は大量の食べ物を食べることを意味します。
何を食べたのかを指定するときには、前置詞「on」を一緒に使います。

英語には「pig (豚)」に関連した多くの表現があり、そのいくつかは欲張りであることや食べ過ぎに関連しています。
私は若いころ、少しのあいだ実際に農場で暮らしていましたが、あなたも豚が食べるのを見たことがあれば、その理由がわかるでしょう。

I don’t know about you but one of the things I love about this time of year is the food so today I will introduce this expression “pig out”

Meaning

Pig out means to eat a huge amount of food. We also use it with the preposition on when specifying what kind of food we ate.

We have a lot of different expressions connected to pigs in English and some of them are connected to being greedy or eating too much. When I was younger I actually spent a bit of time living on a farm and if you have ever seen pigs eat then you will understand why. 

Here are some examples of how to use pig out (on).

  • I can’t wait for Christmas dinner, I’m going to pig out on the turkey and stuffing!
  • I really pigged out at dinner today! I’m so full I can’t move.
  • One of the things I love about eating out in Japan is the buffets and all-you-can-eat menus. There is nothing better than pigging out on all that good food especially if they have all you can drink too!

Christmas Dinner! 

Here are a couple of pictures from Christmas long long ago. My dad used to really pull out all the stops for Christmas and unfortunately I only got a picture of the meat but believe me there was much much more than this to come. We had roast pork with apple sauce, turkey with cranberry and nut stuffing, roast ham with cheese crust and in the top left corner were his amazing sausage rolls which contained enough butter that they should have come with a health warning. Absolutely delicious. 

Similar Expressions

Like I said earlier there are a lot of expressions connected to pigs in English and unfortunately for pigs most of them are slightly negative although I’m sure the pigs don’t mind.

  • greedy as a pig ( to be a very greedy person)

“My son’s friend Colin is as greedy as a pig. He came to the birthday party and ate all the cookies before anyone could get a chance! “

  • make a pig of oneself (to eat too much)

“I feel really bloated today. We went to a dinner party at a friend’s house last night. She’s a really good cook and I made a bit of a pig of myself. I’ll have to hit the gym later”

  • like a pig sty (to be in a messy/ dirty state)

“Clean your room! It looks like a pig sty”

Wrap Up

So there we have it. If you want to express the fact that you have eaten too much, you can always fall back on the poor old pigs to help you describe it in nice colourful language.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Take your classes at the same time and day

Sometimes it’s really hard to find time for things we want to do because of our busy schedules. What I’ve found out this year is that having a fixed time and day to take your classes is an excellent way to make sure you always have time for them.

In Kensington we believe in providing you with as much flexibility as possible but sometimes too much flexibility is not the best thing. Having a fixed time and day you take your classes makes it much easier to plan your rest of your busy week around them. For example, after I decided that I’ll be going to the gym on Friday evening, I never under any circumstances arrange any work at that time. Please give it a try!

私達のスケジュールはとても忙しく、やりたい事のために時間を見つけるのは、時々本当に難しいものです。私は今年気が付きました、レッスンの日時を固定することは、レッスン時間を必ず確保するための素晴らしい方法です。

ケンジントンではできるだけ柔軟にレッスンを設けていると考えていますが、時に柔軟過ぎるのは最も良い方法ではないこともあります。決められた日時にレッスンを受けることで、忙しい週の中でもその前後に休息の計画を立てやすくなるでしょう。

例えば私は、金曜の夜はジムに行くことに決めました、その後はどんな状況下でもこの時間に仕事を入れなくなりました。

Christmas at my home

Hi everyone,

Christmas is approaching and I’m getting more and more excited with each passing day! I’m not sure why I love Christmas so much but it’s probably by far the most anticipated day of the year in the Mastoris household.

We have already decorated the house and decided my children’s presents. This year I’m thinking that I’ll finally tell my daughter that Santa doesn’t really exist and all those presents come from Daddy and Mummy although I’m pretty sure that she has already guessed as much. 

Honestly speaking, I’m a little bit nervous about revealing it to her because as a rule, I try to never lie to my family ( or anyone else really), so it’s slightly hard for me to present this Santa story as anything else than lying. Well, I’ll let her know, and time will tell if making up all these stories about Santa coming in our house from the window to eat the cookies she made for him was worth betraying her trust in us.

我が家のクリスマス

やあ皆さん、

クリスマスが近づいて来ました、私は日を追うごとにどんどんワクワクして来ています！
なぜ私がこんなにもクリスマスが大好きなのかは私にもわからないのです、でもクリスマスはマストリス家にとって、1年の中でおそらくダントツに楽しみにされている日なのです。

私達はすでに家を飾り付け、子供達へのプレゼントを決めています。
ついに今年、私は娘にサンタは実際には存在せず、プレゼントは全てお父さんとお母さんから送られた事を伝えようと考えています。娘はすでにそう思っているとわかってはいますが。

正直にいうと彼女にこれを明かすことは少し心配なのです、なぜならルールとして、私は決して家族に嘘をつかないようにしているからです（実際には誰に対してもです）。だから私にとって、嘘をついた以外の何かとしてこのサンタの話を伝えるのは少し難しい事なのです。
そうですね、私は彼女に伝えようと思います。
サンタさんは娘が彼のために作ったクッキーを食べに窓からやって来るんだよ、という話は全て作り話だった事が、彼女の私達への信頼を裏切ることになるかどうかは、時が教えてくれるでしょう。
