How to make most of your lessons

As you may have noticed recently teachers have started to assign personalised homework for many of our students. This is part of our general drive for classes more and more focused on each individual student’s needs and part of the complete customization we want to offer for our private courses. 

We currently don’t assign homework for every student and after every class but I think our personalised homework is an excellent way to focus on the language and grammar that you need in order to get better so please ask the teacher for homework!

How to ask? “I want to be more prepared for next class. Would you please assign me my personalized homework?”

皆さんお気づきの様に、最近、多くの生徒さんに個人向けの宿題を出し始めました。
これは、各生徒さんのニーズにフォーカスしたレッスンを行うための取り組みの一環であり、プライベートコースの生徒さんに提供したいカスタマイズレッスンの一部でもあります。

私達は今まで、レッスンの後に個人的に宿題を出すことはありませんでした。しかし、個人向けの宿題は、上達が必要な語法や文法にフォーカスする素晴らしい方法です。ぜひ講師に宿題を出してもらって下さい！

どうやって聞けばいいでしょうか？

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Teaching English

Recently I think I have discovered something about myself. I have discovered how much I love teaching English. I of course always knew I liked teaching English but my main role in Kensington is to run the company, meaning the adult and kids school and to make sure all our classes are of a very high standard, manage our teams, improve our services, grow sales, build the culture etc etc. 

I always thought that even though I like teaching English very much, I enjoyed taking care of the business side of things more. In fact, I thought that as I gradually taught less and less classes in order to focus on my growing responsibilities on the business side of things I wouldn’t really miss teaching English all that much. 

I was terribly wrong, recently as I started teaching more classes I realized how much I actually love teaching. Meeting our students, teaching our great Kensington classes, helping them improve, taking care of their learning journey by setting them language targets and advice for next class. Teaching English is an incredibly rewarding job and a job that I never want to stop doing regardless of how busy the business side of things are.

So, I’ll definitely see you in class!!

英語を教えるということ

最近、私自身について発見した事があります。
自分がいかに英語を教えることが大好きかに気づいたのです。
もちろん、英語を教えるのが好きだと以前から分かってはいたのですが、ケンジントン英会話での私の主な役割は、会社、つまり大人とキッズのスクールを運営すること、すべてのレッスンを高水準にし、チームをマネジメントし、サービスを向上させ、売上を上げ、文化を構築することなどです。

私は常に、英語を教えることは大好きですが、ビジネス管理の側面をより楽しんでいると思っていました。実際に、ビジネス面での責任が増えるにつれ、そちらに集中するためにレッスンで教える機会は段々少なくなっも、そこまで寂しくはないと思っていました。

しかしそれは大きな間違いでした。最近レッスンで教える回数を増やし始め、自分がいかに教える事が好きかに気づきました。
生徒さんに会い、素晴らしいケンジントン英会話のレッスンで教え彼らの成長を助け、言語学習の目標を定め英語学習の道のりを支える事、次回のレッスンに向けてアドバイスをする事。
英語を教える事は非常にやりがいがある仕事で、どんなにビジネス面で忙しくても決してこのやりがいを失わずにいたいと思っています。

What have you been up to? meaning in Japanese

Hey everyone, as our subject this week is making small talk, I’ll introduce you to a phrase we very usually use in English when we meet a friend. It’s “What have you been up to” and it means “What have you been doing”.

Ex.
T: Hey Jaimie, how are you doing?

J: Hey Tim, I’m doing great, working in Kensington is truly fantastic! What have you been up to?

T: The usual. Work, family, no complaints. What about yourself?

やあ皆さん、今週のサブジェクトは「世間話」なので、とても友人にあった時にとても良く使う英語のフレーズをご紹介します。

 “What have you been up to”
これは、「最近どう？」という意味です。

例えば

　やぁジェイミー、調子はどう？

Making Small Talk in English

Hey everyone, 

This week’s subject is a very useful topic for all our students. We are going to be talking about how to make small talk in English and is something necessary for almost any practical situation and as such is part of all of our courses.

In any situation when you meet another person you usually need to start with some small talk whether you are meeting a family member, a friend, a coworker, a client or a person you are romantically interested in. 

In Kensington we always start our classes with small talk so I think our students are mostly pretty good at it but some extra practice never hurts!

今週のサブジェクトは生徒の皆さんにとってとても便利です。
英語でのスモールトーク（世間話）の仕方について話します。世間話は殆どの実環境で必要となりますし、私達のすべてのコースでもスモールトークのパートがあります。

家族、友人、同僚、お客様や、恋愛の対象者であろうとなかろうと、どのような環境でも、あなたが他の人に会った時には通常世間話で会話を始めます。

ケンジントン英会話ではいつもレッスンの最初はスモールトークから始まります。そのため、生徒さんの多くは良くできると思いますが、更に練習をすることは、決して無駄にならないと思います。

What we are doing in Kensington
Our Journey to become the best English school in Fukuoka

Hey everyone, as you may have noticed in Kensington we are always trying out new things. Constant improvement and growth is part of our culture and that’s why we have so many things that you can’t find in any other school in Fukuoka. 

Example? Our Nyumon Course, I have worked at so many English schools that have absolutely no idea how to teach English from zero to total beginners. In our school? It’s a piece of cake, we get ALL our total beginners to a conversational level within usually a month, two months at most. 

Another example? Our fully customized private courses, no student in Kensington is following the same course, your course depends on your level, your language needs, your interests and targets. No other school would even attempt to do such a thing. Why? Cause it’s really hard and it requires high level teachers who you can trust to make decisions at a micro level for each student.
The list goes on and I could give you a very large number of other things that we do that other Fukuoka schools don’t but I think you get my point.

Is our Nyumon Course perfect? Yes, I really think it is, it’s an amazing course for total beginners.

Are our fully customized courses perfect? No, definitely not, it’s a massive project that we’ll take us years to perfect as we still have so many things that we want to add and improve on.
But that’s how and why we grew from having nothing 7 years ago to having without a doubt one of the best English schools in Fukuoka for adults and also without a doubt one of the best English schools in Fukuoka for kids. 

We want our schools, our courses, our service, our lessons to be perfect and that’s how and why we are still in business.

これは巨大なプロジェクトであり、完璧になるまでにはあと数年かかるでしょう。まだ付け加えたり、改善したいことは数多くあります。

テスト対策 – TOEFL
リーディングセクションについて

皆さんこんにちは。
ケンジントン英会話、TOEFLエキスパートのティムです。

今日はTOEFLのリーディングテストの特徴について、いくつかのインフォメーションをしたいと思います。

TOEFLのリーディングセクションは、700文字程度の段落3、4個から構成されています。各段落には10個の選択肢があり、皆さんは54分〜72分でリーディングセクションを完了させなければいけません。

リーディングセクションには、イディオムやスラングは含まれず、省略形も殆ど見られません。フォーマルな英語で書かれており、沢山の専門的語彙とフォーマルな文法が使われています。
文章は論理的で客観的です。つまり論調は人間味がなく事実に基づいていて、感情に訴えかけることはありません。

また、段落には多くの異なるアイデアや、相互に関連する部分が存在しています。読者は「行間を読む」ために異なるパートを繋げる必要があるかもしれません。

TOEFLについてさらに研究し、生徒さんに教える事はとても楽しいです。
