“Face the music.”

“Face the music.”
We can use this expression in daily English, but it’s also quite common in business. We say this when we have to accept unpleasant consequences or an unpleasant reality. 

“We are upset about losing this important client. It’s a very big client to lose but it’s time for us to face the music and move on. If we work hard we can attract many other big clients and still have a great year.”

In the above example, it’s time for this company to accept that they lost the client. It’s in the past now and there is no way to change the client’s mind. The employees have to just deal with this reality, and now start to focus on the future.

We also use this expression in our personal lives. For example, when I was younger I thought about being a professional football player. However, I slowly realized I wasn’t fast enough to become a professional athlete! I had to face the music and accept that professional sports wasn’t for me.

“Face the music.”　（招いた結果を潔く受け止める）
これは日常でも使いますが、ビジネスシーンで使われることが多い表現で、喜こばしくない結果や現実に直面した時に言います。

「我々はこの重要な顧客を失うことに動揺している。とても大口の顧客を失うんだ、でも、もうこれを受け止め、動き出さなければいけない時がきた。我々はまだ、一生懸命働いて他の大口の顧客を魅了して素晴らしい年にすることができるはずだよ。」

上の例は、その会社は顧客を失った事実を受け入れる時であることを表しています。それはもう過去のことで、顧客の考えは変えられないのです。従業員たちはただこの現実に対応し、前を向き始めるべきなのです。

この表現は個人の生活上でも使われます。例えばは若い時、プロのサッカー選手になるんだと思っていました。でも、プロのアスリートになるにはもう遅いんだと少しずつ気が付きました！私は自分がプロのスポーツ選手には慣れないことを潔く受け入れなければいけませんでした。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
singing in the shower

This week’s topic is “Music” – so I thought I’d share a music related study tip. Many students feel they can’t practice speaking with the flashcards as much as they’d like to before class – because they don’t have a speaking partner at home. Well, with a little imagination I think you do have the perfect speaking partner – yourself! It’s a great idea to make role plays before class and to play both roles of the speakers in the role play. Essentially, you are having a conversation with yourself – both asking and answering the questions. 

If you want to make your conversations a little more interesting, you don’t need to just speak your role plays – you can sing them! I have a friend who does this when learning Japanese – in the shower every day! She says it’s a great way to build up her fluency – she doesn’t care if it’s 100% accurate – she just keeps singing! There is nobody there to judge her, so she says she can just relax and add new words to her favourite tunes. 

Why not give it a go, singing in the shower – in English!

今週のトピックは「音楽」、そこで私は、音楽と学習の繋がりについてシェアしたいと思います。生徒さんの多くは、レッスンの前にフラッシュカードを使ってやりたいできるだけたくさんスピーキングの練習ができないと感じている、なぜなら家にはスピーキングの相手がいないからです。でも、少し想像を働かせてみて下さい、私はあなたは完璧なスピーキングのパートナーを持てると思います、それは、あなた自身です！

レッスンの前に２人のスピーカー、どちらの役割も練習しておくことは素晴らしい考えです。自分自身に質問をし、答える。両方を行うことで自分と会話をするのです。

もし自分自身と会話をすることにもう少し興味があるのなら、ロールプレイで話すだけにとどめておく必要はありません、歌うことができるのです！毎日シャワーを浴びながら歌って日本語を勉強している友人がいますが、これは流暢に話せるようになるために素晴らしい方法だと言っていました。100%正確かどうかは気にせずに、ただ歌うだけ！そこには審査員はいません、だから彼女はリラックスして好きな曲に新しい単語を足すことができるのです。

試しにシャワーの中で歌ってみましょう、英語でね！

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
“bagpipes”

Do you know the name of the most famous Scottish musical instrument?! I’ll give you a clue, it has a bag and some pipes! Yes, that’s right it’s called the “bagpipes”! Students often ask me if I can play the bagpipes. My answer is always the same: “No way, it’s really difficult!” Actually, not many people in Scotland can play the bagpipes – it’s not so common to learn. You need to practice a lot and they are very noisy, so it’s difficult to play them at home. If you do, your neighbours won’t like you for sure! Also, to play the bagpipes you need powerful lungs. It takes a lot of energy to blow into the pipes to play a full song, so it’s very tiring.

People often ask me if I like the sound of bagpipes. Well, I think it depends on the time and the place. I used to work on Edinburgh’s main street, with lots of tourists, and so I had to listen to a bagpiper playing the same songs (really loudly!) every day – it was awful!! However, we usually listen to bagpipe music when we go to an end of year party and do Scottish dancing. Here, I love listening to bagpipe music – it has lots of energy and is great to dance to! And it makes me a little proud to be Scottish too!

If you want an idea of Scottish dancing and bagpipe music, check out the dance called “The Eightsome Reel” on Youtube, it’s one of the most famous ones.

スコットランドで最も有名な楽器の名前を知っていますか？ヒントをあげましょう、その楽器にははバッグと数本のパイプがあります。そうです、正解は「バグパイプ」です！良く生徒さんに私がバグパイプを演奏できるか聞かれます。私の答えはいつも同じです。「まさか！あれはとっても難しいんですよ！」

実際、スコットランドでもバグパイプを演奏できる人は多くなく、演奏方法を学ぶことはあまり一般的ではありません。すごくたくさんの練習が必要ですし、とてもうるさいので、家で演奏するのは難しいのです。もしあなたがそんなことをしたら、近所の人は絶対に嫌がるでしょうね！それにバグパイプを演奏するにはパワフルな肺が必要です。1曲演奏するためにパイプに息を吹き込むにはたくさんのエネルギーを使うのでものすごく疲れるのです。

バグパイプの音色は好きですか？ともよく聞かれます。えぇと、時と場所によりますね。私はたくさんの観光客がいるエディンバラのメインストリートで働いていたので、毎日バグパイプの演奏者が同じ曲を（すごく大きい音量で！）演奏するのを聴かなければならず、それはひどかった！

でも、1年の終わりにパーティーに行くといつも、スコットランド舞踊とともにバグパイプの演奏を聴きます。そこでその演奏を聴くのは大好きです。とてもエネルギーに満ち溢れていて、ダンスにもぴったりです！そして、スコットランド人であることを少し誇らしく感じさせてくれるのです。

Everyday English
“Music to my ears!”

In English, we often say “That’s music to my ears!” We say this when we hear good news, usually that directly benefits us. It means we are very happy to hear the new information. For example, last month my friend Jo asked me if I could help him to move house. You see, I drive a car here in Fukuoka, but I think Jo doesn’t know anyone else with a car! He was a little worried because he doesn’t have a driver’s licence and therefore cannot rent a car. He has a lot of stuff, including some heavy furniture, so he didn’t think he could move apartments by himself. When I gave Jo the good news and told him I had some free time on the weekend and that I could help him move apartments with my car, he was very pleased. He said, “Ross, that is music to my ears! I don’t know what I would have done otherwise.”

So the next time you hear great news, or a friend offers you help that makes your life a little better or easier, you can use this expression to let them know what a difference their help makes.

英語では、通常は自分たちに直接関係するような良いニュースを聞いた時によく「Music to my ears!」と言います。その知らせを聞いてとても幸せだ、という意味です。例えば、先月友人のジョーが私に、引越しの手伝いができるかどうか尋ねました。ご存知の通り、私は福岡で車を運転しています。でもジョーは免許を持っていないのでレンタカーを借りることができず、車を持っている人を誰も知らなかったので少し心配していました。彼の荷物はすごく多くて、中にはすごく重い家具もあるので一人では引越せないと思っていたのです。私がジョーに、週末に空いた時間があって、車で引越しを手伝うことができるという良いニュースを伝えた時、彼はとても喜びました。

This week’s subject
Music

This week’s subject is “Music” – so we are going to be talking about all our favourite artists, albums and songs. Music is such a big part of life that I think we often forget about it! Whether we’re watching TV, surfing the web, or even shopping in the supermarket, chances are we are listening to music at various points during each day of our lives. The most important aspect of music is perhaps how it influences us, and how it has the power to change the way we feel. This is what we really want to talk about in class. Of course, we can talk about our favourite singers – but why are they our favourite? When do we listen to them, and how does their music make us feel?

For me, I like a wide variety of music. However, recently I’ve been listening a lot to the artist “The Weeknd”. I’m really into British and American pop music. In fact, The Weeknd is actually a Canadian artist, from Toronto, Ontario. He is one of the most famous artists in the world right now, and he is even due to perform at the Superbowl this year. This is perhaps the biggest sporting event of the US calendar, and the half-time show is really important because it’s watched by millions of people all over the world. His genre can be described as pop or R&B. I recommend checking out his song called “Blinding Lights” – it became a Number 1 hit in 34 countries! I often listen to his music, including this song, while I’m cooking at home. It is really upbeat, but also helps me to relax as it reminds me of my university days back in Scotland, when I used to listen to similar kinds of music.

今週のレッスントピックは「音楽」です。大好きなアーティスト、アルバム、曲について話しましょう。

音楽がいかに生活の中で大きな割合を占めているかを、私達は時々忘れてしまいます！テレビを観ている時も、ネットサーフィンをしている時も、スーパーで買い物をしている時でさえも、毎日の生活の中のあらゆる場面で音楽を聞いているのです。

音楽の最も重要な側面は、おそらく、いかに私達に影響を与えるかと、私達の感情を変える力を持っていることでしょう。これについてはレッスンでぜひ話したいです。

もちろん、人気の歌手についても話しましょう、なぜ彼らは人気があるのでしょうか？いつ彼らの音楽を聴いて、彼らの音楽は私達をどんな気分にさせますか？

私は幅広いジャンルの音楽が好きです。でも最近では「The Weeknd」というというアーティストを良く聴いています。私は特にUKとアメリカのPOPミュージックが好きですが、実は彼らはカナダのトロント、オンタリオの出身です。現在では世界で最も有名なアーティストの1人で、今年のスーパーボウルでパフォーマンスをする予定さえあるのです。スーパーボウルは、おそらくアメリカで行われている最も大きいスポーツイベントで、世界中の何百万人もの人々が観る、ハーフタイムショウは本当に重要です。彼のジャンルは、POP、またはR＆Bと言えるでしょう。

What we are doing in Kensington
Improve our teaching and the classe

Last week I taught a class and I recorded it with my tablet. Then, Iuploaded this video online and the other teachers watched it and took notes. They took some tips on what they really enjoyed about the class, and also wrote down other teaching strategies to offer a few alternatives. We then had an online meeting where we discussed this class. The teachers gave me great feedback and told me a couple of new ideas they got from my class. They also gave me some great advice on how I could approach some parts of the lesson differently. We all feel this is a very beneficial process that is really going to improve our teaching and the classes in Kensington. I think the students are really lucky that the staff are working so hard on self-improvement and working together as a team. I know for a fact that most other language schools don’t do this, so it’s fantastic that Kensington is taking such a novel approach. This is just the beginning, but in the weeks and months ahead, the teaching team in Kensington is set to make big progress! We hope this is reflected in your classes, and students both enjoy their classes more and improve their English even faster.

先週、私はレッスンをタブレットで録画しました。その後オンラインでアップロードして、他の講師たちがそれを観て色々とメモをとってくれました。

彼らはレッスンをとても楽しむために得たいくつかのヒントや新しいプランのためのティーチング戦略を書き記してくれました。その後、オンラインミーティングでこのレッスンについて話し合いました。講師達は私のレッスンから得た新しいアイデアなど、私に素晴らしいフィードバックをしてくれました。彼らはまた、レッスンのいくつかの部分への違ったアプローチの仕方について素晴らしいアドバイスをしてくれました。
