This week’s subject is on “how to be polite”. It’s an interesting topic honestly, because being polite is a matter of cultural difference, body language, tone and particular language being used.

As an example, in Japan, being polite is largely considered a virtue in many circumstances, and Japan is a gerontocracy – what this means is that it’s “age based”. In other words, your “superiors” are people older than you. In Japan, it’s generally considered important to be extra polite to your seniors and show respect.

On the other hand, many Western countries tend to be meritocracies – this is an “ability” based idea. This means that people with high competency and talent are respected.

These are just ideas and it doesn’t encompass ALL of Japan or Western societies, but it gives an example as to how complex politeness can be depending on the culture, and makes for very interesting conversation.

礼儀正しくするにはどうしたらいい？

やあ皆さん、デニーです。

今週のサブジェクトは、「礼儀作法」です。
正直にいって、これは面白い話題です。なぜなら「礼儀」は、文化的な違いやボディランゲージ、トーン、使用される特定の言語によっても異なるからです。

例えば、日本では多くの場合、礼儀正しいことは美徳だと考えられてます。そして日本は長老政治、つまり年功序列の国です。言い換えれば、あなたよりも年上の人を優先するということです。これは常に老人に敬意を払うことは、礼儀作法のためにはとても重要だと考えられています。

一方、多くの欧米の国々は実力主義社会の傾向があります。これは能力に基づいた考え方で、高い能力と才能を持った人々が尊重されます。

これはあくまでも考え方であり、日本や欧米社会の全てではありません。しかし、礼儀作法が、文化によっていかに複雑になるかのいい例となりますし、とても面白い会話ができるでしょう。
