“(It’s) Tasty!”

Hey guys. Since I’ve been teaching, I’ve noticed a number of fundamental differences between the way Japanese and English is used. Some of these differences can cause students to make errors, as they are used to using a language in a certain way, but English just functions differently. 

In Japanese, I think it’s kind of rare to say ‘これは美味しいです’ in casual conversation, as the ‘これ’ is usually dropped. But in English, it’s really the opposite, we very rarely drop the ‘it’s’. Here are some example mistakes and the corrections:

‘Did you like dinner?’ ‘Yes, good.’ -> ‘Yes, it was good’
‘I don’t know 鮭, what is it?’ ‘fish’ -> ‘It’s a fish’

These are simple examples, but these mistakes are made by advanced learners, too. It’s only a small thing, but it will make a really big difference to your level if you can consistently use those important words (it, that, this, they, etc.).

忘れがちな「It’s」

やぁみんな。
私は講師を始めてから、日本語と英語の使われ方には根本的な相違が沢山あることに気が付きました。これらのいくつかは、皆さんが当然の様に使い慣れている方法が、英語では違う働きをするため、生徒さんを間違わせる原因になります。
日本語ではカジュアルな会話の中では「これは美味しいです」と言うことは少なく、通常「これ」は省力されると思います。しかし英語では全く逆で、「It’s」を省略することは本当にまれです。

いくつかの間違いと正解の例を挙げてみます。
‘Did you like dinner?’
ディナーはどうでしたか？

‘Yes, good.’ -> ‘Yes, it was good’
美味しかったです。

‘I don’t know 鮭, what is it?’
鮭を知りません。それは何ですか？

‘fish’ -> ‘It’s a fish’
魚です。

とてもシンプルな例ですが、上級者の方でもこれらの間違いをしてしまいます。小さなことですが、もしこれらの重要な単語「it, that, this, theyなど」をきちんと使うことができたなら、あなたのレベルに大きな差を生むかもしれません。

This week’s subject
Bucket List

This week’s subject is ‘Bucket List’.

We’ll be talking all about our hopes and dreams, both in the past and future tense. We’ll be practicing “Have you ever tried (bungee jumping)?” and “Do you want to try (bungee jumping)?”, two really useful questions for almost any topic. 

In the advanced classes, we’ll also practice conditional sentences. We use “if” and “would” a ton as native speakers, so these are really important to master. We’ll get there together.

今週のレッスントピック
Bucket List – 死ぬまでにしたいこと

今週のレッスンの題材は「バケットリスト」です。
過去や未来の夢や希望について話しましょう。

“Have you ever tried (bungee jumping)?”
　今までに（バンジージャンプにトライ）した事はありますか？（完了形）

“Do you want to try (bungee jumping)?”
　（バンジージャンプにトライ）したいですか？（現在形）

と言う表現の練習をします。これら２つはとても便利で、ほぼ全ての話題で使う事ができます。

上級者クラスでは、コンディショナルを使用した文章についても練習しましょう。
ネイティブスピーカーは、“if” と “would”をとても頻繁に使います。そのためこれらをマスターする事は本当に大切です。

Be my valentine

Hey guys, 

‘Will you be my valentine?’ This special holiday has a special way to ask someone out for a date: ‘Will you be my Valentine?’. It’s kind of an older thing to say though, so if you ever want to ask someone out on a date in English, it’s best to say something like: ‘Would you like to go for a drink sometime?’ or ‘Can I take you out for dinner this weekend?’.

この特別なお祝いイベントには、誰かをデートに誘うための、特別な言い方があります。

‘Will you be my valentine?’

けれど、少し古い言い方になるので、もしあなたが誰かを英語でデートに誘いたかったなら、こんな言い方の方がベストです。

‘Would you like to go for a drink sometime?’
( 時々飲みにいきませんか？）

‘Can I take you out for dinner this weekend?’
(今週末ディナーに行きませんか？)
