Business English
Seasons Greetings

Many Kensington students use English at work, to communicate with clients all over the world. We may not be meeting each other in person, but it’s still nice to send a short message to wish them well at this time of year. So how do you say Happy Holidays in a business email?

Well, simple greetings like, “Season’s Greetings” or “Happy Holidays” is appropriate. You can also add “I hope the season is treating you well. I wanted to thank you for your business this year and wish you and your team a Happy New Year.”

Remember, you don’t need to write a lot or go into great detail. A short message is fine and will be appreciated. If you are writing to your boss or other team members, here are a few extra phrases you can steal:

  • “Thank you for all your hard work and dedication this year.”
  • “Thank you for inspiring me to do my best every day.”
  • “Wishing a wonderful Christmas to a wonderful mentor!”
  • “Our team wouldn’t be the same without you.”
  • “Thank you for another outstanding year!”

Hope these are useful for you. Merry Christmas everyone!

Ross

シンプルな挨拶なら、Season’s Greetings(季節のご挨拶)、Happy Holidays(良い休暇をお過ごし下さい)が適切です。

I hope the season is treating you well. I wanted to thank you for your business this year and wish you and your team a Happy New Year.

“Thank you for all your hard work and dedication this year.”

“Thank you for inspiring me to do my best every day.”

“Wishing a wonderful Christmas to a wonderful mentor!”

“Our team wouldn’t be the same without you.”

“Thank you for another outstanding year!”

Study Advice How to make most of your lessons
learn about the culture

One of the best things about learning a foreign language is that you can also learn about the culture that comes with the language. Christmas in western culture is so different from how it is celebrated in Japan. If you have the chance before your Christmas classes, I recommend having a look online and trying to find out about some unfamiliar traditions that your teachers might often do at this time of year. Why not prepare some questions for your teacher, and ask them about their family home and traditions, or how they celebrated Christmas when they were young. For example, my mother has some very particular Christmas routines – she loves Christmas but my father doesn’t! Ask me in class and I’ll tell you all about it! And when I was young, I used to always go “sledging” with my friends in the park near my house. Have you heard of sledging?

I’ll be sure to give you all my sledging secrets in class!

See you then,

Ross

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
New Year celebrations in Edinburgh

As many of you know, my hometown is Edinburgh – and it’s really famous for its New Year celebrations. We actually call new year “Hogmanay” in Scotland. On December 31st, there is a big street party in the main street in the city. The roads are closed and the street is just filled with people. There are bands playing loud music on the stages and it’s so packed it’s hard to move. Of course, it’s very cold in Scotland at the end of the year. Everyone is usually freezing, and wearing a really big winter jacket, hat, scarf and gloves! However, this doesn’t stop people from celebrating. At midnight we have a big countdown from 10 to 1 – everyone joins in! On the stroke of midnight, we can enjoy one of the biggest fireworks displays in the world from Edinburgh Castle. Then everyone hugs and kisses each other – friends, family and strangers too – and shouts “HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” After the fireworks, everyone heads inside to the pub. We sing Auld Lang Syne and raise a glass to welcome the new year.

If you ever have the chance to visit Scotland, and can bear the cold weather, I definitely recommend going there for New Year – it’s a party like no other!

Happy Hogmanay everyone!

Ross

Happy Hogmanay!

Everyday English
“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

“Happy Holidays” Vs. “Merry Christmas”

These two phrases are used a lot in December! Everyone wishes each other well for the holiday period at the end of the year. In the UK, most people greet each other with “Merry Christmas” on Christmas Day. Even strangers passing in the street, or staff talking to customers in shops, will use this phrase. However, in America, did you know that most people don’t say this, and actually usually say “Happy Holidays”? You see, Christmas is a Christian holiday. However, America has a wide range of nationalities and religions – most US citizens aren’t Christian and don’t celebrate Christian traditions. Therefore, in the US and Canada, most people wish each other “Happy Holidays” – because this phrase is much more inclusive. It includes everyone, no matter what nationality or religion people are. Of course, it also includes all the people who don’t associate with any religion too. So, if you are spending any time over in the States at Christmas and New Year, remember to wish everyone “Happy Holidays!”

Happy Holidays everyone!

Ross

This week’s subject is Christmas and New Years. We’re going to be talking about all the things we love about the holiday season. First, we’re going to talk about the various traditions that are popular in both western and Japanese culture at this time of year. Also, we’re going to share our habits and routines – so remember to come to class prepared to talk about what you usually do over the holidays. Where do you usually go? What do you usually eat? Do you decorate your house? Do you usually exchange cards and gifts?

We’re also going to talk about how we used to celebrate Christmas and New Year when we were younger, and our favourite experiences and presents.

Western and Japanese holidays at this time of year are so different, so let’s have fun comparing them and learning about each other’s holiday traditions!

What we are doing in Kensington
Christmas holiday

At this time of year in Kensington, we are all looking forward to the Christmas holiday season. For many teachers, the celebrating starts on December 1st – as we start to count down the days until Christmas Day. Like many companies in the UK, we are closed for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year. It gives everyone a chance to spend time with family, relax and re-energize for the new year.

Of course, the holidays are fun. However, at Kensington we also need to be ready for starting back in January. So these days we are preparing all our classes, materials and schedules for not only this week, but all of January too! It’s a lot of work, but it’s best to be organized and get everything done now so we can enjoy the holidays.

See you in class,

Ross

 Business English
“Corner the market.”

When we’re talking about our own possessions, there’s a good chance we’re often talking about products that come from world famous companies, dominating their markets. As I write this blog on my iPad, I notice that this device has helped Apple to corner the market in mobile devices and tablets. Of course, many other companies produce tablets, but Apple has a very big share of this market compared to the other companies – and this situation doesn’t look like it’s changing any time soon. If a company has such a large control of a particular market, it can also mean higher prices due to a lack of competition – so while it’s good for the company, it’s not necessarily a good thing for consumers.

Cornering a market can also be said of a company that provides service, rather than products. For example, perhaps we could say that Uber Eats has cornered the market in the food delivery sector.

Next time you see me in class, remember to tell me about some companies that have cornered some markets that you’re interested in!

Ross

Study Advice
How to make most of your lessons

This week’s topic is “Possessions” – and it’s a great topic to talk about your own life. I recommend before class to do some brainstorming and think of your favourite possessions in your life. You don’t need to talk about big, expensive possessions like houses and cars. Try to think about the small things that make you happy every day. Perhaps it’s your favourite mug, or a family photo by your bed. Whatever it is, try to explain to your teacher what it is that you love so much about your favourite things.

For example, the favourite thing in my kitchen is my huge Starbucks mug! Usually in Japan, glasses, cups and mugs are quite small and, for me, a little inconvenient. It’s quite hard to find very big mugs in Japan. Luckily, I found a really big mug in Starbucks last year – so I bought it immediately! I love to drink a big cup of tea or coffee in the morning, and my mug is perfect for this. I usually don’t like big brands, but I think the black Starbucks logo on my mug looks quite cool. I think it cost about 1500 yen, and it really helps me to wake up in the morning!

I recommend thinking of the important possessions in your life, both big and small. Also, be sure to ask your teacher about their favourite possessions and join the discussion!

See you in class!

Ross

Talk about myself/my hometown my country
Scotish Kilt

Many Scottish men own a tartan kilt – it’s a type of skirt, but only for men. We wear it on special occasions, such as weddings. You don’t need to be the groom to wear a kilt, in fact usually all men at a Scottish wedding wear kilts. I think kilts look quite fashionable, and very traditional. They are often different shades of green: usually dull colours, but you can also find more modern styles with brighter colours. I own a kilt and mine is more of a modern style. It has the traditional tartan check pattern, but it has some bright yellow and red lines mixed in with the green. Although they look great, sometimes they can be quite uncomfortable and impractical to wear! For example, they are quite heavy, and if it rains (it always rains in Scotland!) and your kilt gets wet, it gets even heavier and takes a long time to dry. Also, wearing a kilt in Scottish winter is absolutely freezing! In general though, I love wearing my kilt at weddings, and it’s great fun to see everyone doing traditional Scottish dancing while wearing their kilts.

If you’re interested in Scottish culture, please feel free to ask me any questions you have next time we meet.

Ross

日常でつかえる英語表現 -“A picture is worth a thousand words-百聞は一見にしかず”

Everyday English
“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

In English we say “A picture is worth a thousand words.” This means that difficult or complex ideas can often easily be shown with just one picture. We hope each photo we share helps to brainstorm lots of ideas to talk about. Pictures help us to talk about many small details we often overlook or forget. Also, they help others to get a good feeling of a person, possession or place.

When I see a new photo, I also want to know about all the things I can’t see in a photo! For example, I often want to ask about whatever happened before or after the photo was taken. I want to know the background of the people in the photos, and why they are doing what they are doing. What’s missing? Why is it not there? Is this normal? How did the people in the photo feel at that time? Sometimes the picture can answer all these questions, and sometimes we need another thousand words to discuss everything! Either way, photos are great conversation starters, and a great tool to improve our English language skills.

Ross

“A picture is worth a thousand words-百聞は一見にしかず”
