“It’s on me.” / “It’s on us.”

“It’s on me.” / “It’s on us.”

This week we are talking about restaurants, so here is a common expression you can use to treat a friend after enjoying a delicious meal. If you want to pay for the whole bill, when it arrives at your table you can simply say “It’s on me!” or “I’ll get this one.” If your friend or colleague objects, you can add “You can get it next time.” This will allow them to relax and accept your offer. However, if you’re dining with a client, it might be better to say “It’s on us.” This makes it clear that your company is paying for the bill, rather than you personally. Your client will feel more relaxed and happy to hear that you are using the company credit card to treat him/her to this dinner.

でも、もしあなたがお客様と食事をするのであれば、 「It’s on us. – これは私共で」と言った方がいいでしょう。これで、あなた個人でなくあなたの会社が支払うということが明確になります。あなたがこのディナーの支払いに会社のカードを使えると聞いて、お客様はほっとすることでしょう。

 Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
 Jeopardy style learning!

My study tip for today is Jeopardy style learning! Do you know the famous game show in America called Jeopardy? The host gives the answer and the contestant provides the correct question – it’s like a back to front game show. Well, if you are preparing for, for example, this week’s Restaurants class you can use the same style to get ready for class. If you have a photo of a time you went to a restaurant, or a photo of your favourite restaurant/menu, you can share it in class. Before you go to class you can prepare a short speech to introduce the photo or restaurant. Then, think about what questions your statements answer. For example, if you say “This is a photo of me and my high school friend in a yakitori restaurant” – the question would be “Who are you with?” / “Who did you go with?” or “What kind of restaurant are you in?” Remember, you can ask the same questions to your classmates when they show you their photos or describe their favourite restaurant. This style of reverse learning is a great way to find out lots of information from your partner, show interest and continue the conversation. Try it in class and see if it helps to improve your fluency and ability to hold a more natural conversation.

今日の私からの学習アドバイスは「Jeopardy(ジェパディ) スタイルの学習」です！
アメリカの有名なゲームショウ「ジェパディ」をご存知ですか？

まず司会者が「答え」を提示し、解答者が「正しい質問」を答えるという、前後の順序が逆になったようなクイズ形式の番組です。

予習をするなら、例えば、今週の「レストラン」のレッスンに向けても同じ方法で準備をすることができます。もしあなたがレストランに行った時の写真や、お気に入りのレストランやメニューの写真を持っていたら、レッスンで共有して下さい。レッスンに行く前に、写真やレストランの短い紹介文を準備し、それから、あなたの答えに対する質問を考えましょう。

例えばもしあなたが、

「これは私と高校時代の友人が焼き鳥屋さんにいる写真です」と言ったら、
「あなたと一緒にいる人は誰ですか？/ あなたは誰と一緒にそこに行きましたか？」

または
「あなたはどんなレストランにいるのですか？/」などの質問になります。

クラスメイトが写真を見せてお気に入りのレストランについて説明した場合にも、あなたは同じ質問をすることができますね。

この逆転の学習はあなたがパートナーから沢山の情報を得て興味を示し、会話を続けるための素晴らしい学習方法です。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Fish and Chips

When I tell students I’m from Scotland, they often ask me if I like Fish and Chips. Well, I do like fish and chips – but it depends where I get it from! There are many good places and just as many bad places. However, in the UK people don’t usually eat fish and chips at a restaurant – we usually get take out. The quality of fish can vary quite a lot. People usually eat the fish with tartar sauce, vinegar and/or a squeeze of lemon juice. For the chips, we can add tomato sauce or brown sauce – which is more fruity. Me, I prefer fish with tartar sauce and chips with brown sauce! It’s not so healthy but very tasty, especially late at night when I haven’t had time to cook dinner! If you ever go to the UK, I recommend trying fish and chips, but remember to have low expectations – it could be good or bad depending on the place!

フィッシュアンドチップス

私の出身国、スコットランドについて話していると、多くの生徒さんにフィッシュアンドチップスを好きかと聞かれます。まぁ、私はフィッシュアンドチップスが好きです、でも、どこで買うかによります!!
たくさんの場所で美味しいフィッシュアンドチップスを買うことができますし、同じくらい沢山の場所で、美味しくないものを売っています。
でも、UKの人々はあまりフィッシュアンドチップスをレストランで食べません、普通はテイクアウトするのです。

魚のクオリティはとても色々で、通常はタルタルソースとお酢、それに絞ったレモンをかけたりして食べます。ポテトにはトマトソースかブラウンソースを足せばもっとフルーティになりますよ。
私は魚にはタルタルソース、ポテトにはブラウンソースを付けるのが好きです。
あまり健康的ではないですが、特に夕食を作る時間が無かった日の遅い時間に食べると、これがすごく美味しいんです！

Every Day English
“Grab a bite to eat.”

“Grab a bite to eat.”

Of course, in English we can use more formal English and say, “I want to go to a restaurant” or “I’m hungry, let’s eat some food.” However, when I’m with my friends I usually use casual and more natural expressions. For example, when I’m out with my friends I often ask them “(Do you) want to grab a bite to eat?” It means exactly the same – “Would you like to get something to eat?” However, when we say it doesn’t always mean a large “grab a bite” meal. It could be just a sandwich, snack or smaller dishes. Also, it’s usually used when we are suddenly a little hungry, without making a plan to eat. It’s very informal, but also a really common expression. I often say it when I’m passing a convenience store! For example, when I’m walking along the street I often say to my friend “Wait a minute, I’m going to go into Lawson quickly to grab a bite to eat. Do you want anything?!” My friend understands that I don’t need a lot of food, just that I’m feeling a little hungry right now!

もちろん、私たちはもっとフォーマルな英語を使って言うことができますよ、

“I want to go to a restaurant”
（レストランに行きたいです）

“I’m hungry, let’s eat some food.”
（お腹が空きました、何か食べましょう）

でも、普段友人といる時は、もっとカジュアルで自然な表現を使います。
例えば友人との外出先ではよくこの様に聞きます。

“(Do you) want to grab a bite to eat?”
（軽く何か食べない？）

これは、
“Would you like to get something to eat?” 

と同じ意味ですが、“grab a bite”と言う時は、サンドウィッチやスナックなどの軽食を意味します。食事をするつもりではなかったのに、急にお腹が空いてしまった時にも使う、とても一般的な表現です。

私はコンビニに立ち寄る時によくこの表現を使います！例えば、友達と道を歩いている時に、

「ちょっと待ってて、急いでローソンに行って軽く食べるよ。何か欲しいものある？」
これで友人は、私は今ちょっと小腹が空いていて、そんなに沢山の食べ物は必要ないんだと理解できるのです。

This week’s subject
Restaurants

This week we’re going to be talking about Restaurants in class. This subject is one of my favourites, and it’s also a really important one as we spend a lot of time going to restaurants! We’re going to learn how to talk about our favourite restaurants in Fukuoka, why we like them so much and give some recommendations to our teacher and classmates. We’re also going to practice talking about restaurants we’ve been to recently, what we ordered and who we went with. Lastly, we’ll try to talk about some restaurants we’d love to visit in the future – and remember they don’t need to be in Japan! For example, one day I’d like to have dinner at the top of the Empire State Building in New York City – the view is amazing!

What we are doing in Kensington
creating and designing some new lessons

These days in Kensington I’m creating and designing some new lessons that will be ready this spring. Some of the new classes contain cultural elements to help students not only talk about British and Japanese culture, but also learn some facts and useful information about the UK. We are also adding some extra classroom materials that we will be printing and laminating to use with some of these lessons. Over time, you will begin to see more materials in the classroom that will make our lessons more interesting and realistic. I’m sure you’ll get the chance to see them soon!
