Don’t identify yourself with your ideas

Today, instead of teaching you a business English expression, I’d like to share something that is very important for us in Kensington. It’s “Don’t identify yourself with your ideas” and “see different viewpoints as additive instead of competitive”; it’s two things we frequently repeat in Kensington to ensure a diversity of opinions and ideas and also to ensure that we build and preserve a creative culture. 

They are very important because if you identify too closely with your ideas, you could probably be offended if someone disagreed with them. Likewise, if you see different ideas as competitive then you are less willing to accept feedback and different ways of thinking. 

They are two very simple ideas but incredibly important for us. They both came from a wonderful book I’ve read by Ed Catmull called “Creativity, INC” which is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in how to create and foster a creative culture in a company.

本日は、ビジネス英語表現を紹介する代わりに、ケンジントンで大切にされていることについてお話したいと思います。それは「自分の考えや意見をもとにしてアイデンティティーをもたない」ということと「価値観の違いを付加的なものとして捉え、競争的なものとしてみなさないこと」の2つです。これは多様な意見や考えを確保し、クリエイティブな文化を築き上げ、保つためにケンジントンで繰り返し話されていることです。

これら2つはとても重要なことです。なぜなら、あなたが自分の意見や考えをもとに自分のアイデンティティーを持ってしまうと、もし誰かがその意見に反対したとき自分自身を否定されたと感じてしまうかもしれないからです。同じようにもし違う意見を競争的なものとして捉えてしまうと、フィードバックや考え方の違いを受け入れにくくなってしまいます。

この2つはとてもシンプルな教えですが、私達にとってはとても重要なことです。
これらはエド・キャットミルによって書かれた「Creativity, INC」という素晴らしい本の中で紹介されており、会社の中でクリエイティブな文化を作り出し、育てることに興味のある人にぜひおすすめします。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons

I’m sounding like a broken record on these blogs but please always come to our classes with a target to use as much English as possible. 

In Kensington we have a pre-study site with most of the vocab and grammar necessary for you to participate in our classes smoothly. Please come prepared and try to see each class as a conversation with your teacher about the subject of the day. If you come prepared with many things to say about our subject and many questions for your teachers, you’ll soon find out that you are improving at a higher rate than before!

今までのブログの中でもうるさいほど繰り返していますが、レッスンにはターゲットに沿ったできるだけ多くの英語表現を準備して来てください。

ケンジントンには授業へスムーズに参加するために必要な単語や文法のほとんどを学習できる予習サイトがあります。
レッスンにはしっかりと準備をしてのぞみ、一つ一つのクラスをその日のテーマについて講師と英語で会話する機会として利用してください。

もしも、テーマについて話したい内容や講師に聞いてみたい質問をしっかり準備してレッスンに参加すると、自分の英語能力が以前よりも上達したことをすぐに感じることができるでしょう！

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Our new academic year

2020 was a really tough year for Kensington as it was for most companies around the world, we suddenly saw what was going to be our best year ever develop into a nightmare, losing over 30% of our adult students and in the process having to separate with beloved coworkers. 

I think we did a good job at regrouping after our losses though and we are starting the 2021 academic year with what I think is the best lineup of teachers and staff that we have ever had. Kensington is swiftly becoming THE place to work at if you are a talented, hardworking and personable English teacher or a talented, hardworking Japanese worker with good to great English ability. 

Now it’s our responsibility to maximise what all these talented people can achieve in the coming year. It’s a pretty challenging task but super exciting and wouldn’t change my job for anything in the world!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介
新年度を迎えて

2020年は世界中の他の企業と同じようにケンジントンにとっても大変な一年であり、過去一番素晴らしい年になる予定だったものが一点、悪夢のような一年になりました。大人のスクールでは30％以上の生徒さんがケンジントンを去ってしまい、大切な同僚たちともお別れをしなくてはなりませんでした。

しかし、私達はこれらの喪失にもくじけず、チームとして一致団結して、2021年のスクールイヤーを今まで以上に素晴らしい講師陣やスタッフとともに始めることができたと感じています。ケンジントンは才能があり、働き者である、個性的な英語講師や高い英語能力をもった才能のある、働き者の日本人スタッフが集まる仕事場になってきています。

今、これらの素晴らしい同僚とともにこの年で達成できることを最大限大きくしていくことが私達がすべきことです。これはとても難しいことですが、同時にワクワクすることでもあり、世界中の他の何にも変えられない仕事です。

This week’s subject
Culture

This weekend in our Kensington classes, our target will be to have an as natural as possible conversation about culture. Culture is a really big subject and it includes a variety of things we can talk about. We are going to break it down into three categories, mainly food, traditional culture and modern culture.

In the lower level classes we’ll be focusing slightly on some very useful grammar such as present perfect, present simple and “would you like” questions and in the higher level classes will be focusing more on fluency and being able to both talk about our own culture in relative detail but also be able to ask about other people’s cultures too.

There’s so much to talk about and it should be a super fun class!

今週のレッスントピック
文化について英語で語ろう

今週末のケンジントンの授業では、文化についてできるだけ自然な会話を行うことが目標になります。
文化についてというと、とても大きなテーマで、内容も様々あるかと思いますが、今回は主に、食べ物、伝統的文化、現代的文化の3つにカテゴリー分けしていきます。

初級者向けクラスでは、現在完了形や現在形といった日常でよく使う文法や“would you like”を使った質問を会話内で活用することを中心に学びます。
上級者向けクラスではより流暢に話せることや自分たちの文化を詳細とともに説明するだけでなく、多文化について質問できるようになることにもフォーカスして学習します。

話題に尽きない楽しいクラスになること間違いなしです！
