外国のテレビ番組でイギリスやオーストラリアのアクセントに慣れる

Foreign Shows for Listening Prep

Something I’ve picked up on recently with students preparing for tests is that accents tend to throw them off and create great difficulty in their listening.

My advice here is quite easy to do: find foreign TV shows from countries such as the UK, America, Australia and so on, and if they have subtitles, put those on too.

From there, watch the show to your leisure, but take note and repeat the areas where you have difficulty understanding it. This will help you a lot, because you can repeat it to your heart’s content and also watch not just the lip movements (VERY important), but see the subtitles too.

If you continue to do this and focus in on weak areas, your listening will drastically improve, and your understanding of how English speech flows will improve too.

最近、生徒さんたちとテスト対策をしている中で気付いたことは、英語のアクセントが彼らを混乱させ、リスニングをとても難しくする傾向があるということです。

ここでの私のアドバイスは非常に簡単です。
イギリス、アメリカ、オーストラリアなど外国のテレビ番組を見つけて、字幕がある場合は表示させましょう。

あとは、時間のある時に番組を見てください。しかし理解するのが難しいところに注意して繰り返し見ましょう。
このやり方は、満足するまで繰り返すことができますし、唇の動きだけでなく(これも非常に重要)、字幕も見ることができるため、とても役立ちます。

これを続けて弱点に集中すれば、リスニングが大幅に向上し、英語を話す流れも分かるようになってきます。

Reading tips for TOEIC

Hey everyone,

As you know, we have decided to expand our lessons onto test prep and we are really excited to be offering the high quality test prep lessons you deserve balancing getting a higher score and achieving your target while also keeping the class enjoyable and fun!

My advice today is for the TOEIC reading part. Many of the passages in the TOEIC reading part are letters or emails. The first thing you should do is identify 

  • 1. Who is sending this letter/mail
  • 2. Who is the recipient
  • 3. What the subject is

Usually this information is on the top of the email or in the first couple of sentences. So by looking at the top and reading the 1st sentence you can establish some basic information about the mail.

TOEICのリーディングには手紙やメールが多くあり、その場合あなたが最初にすべきことは下記を確認することです。

  • 1. 送信者
  • 2. 受信者
  • 3. 件名

通常、これらの情報はメールの上部または最初の文章の中にあります。
したがって、まずはメールの上部を見て、最初の文を読むことで、メールに関する基本的な情報を把握することができますよ。

TOEIC-speaking tips

Warm greetings everyone, it’s a week or more into April. Has April brought any changes in your life? Here are some more pointers about the TOEIC speaking test Questions 5-7 (Responding to questions) You’ll be asked questions on a range of subjects; TV, movies, shopping etc. Please answer in complete natural sentences, stick to the topic and avoid socially offensive responses. You’ll get more points for complete, relevant and socially acceptable answers (of course plus correct grammar, vocabulary, cohesion (結束), pronunciation…) 

What do you use social media for?

I use it for many things, for example……   

Qns 8-10 Respond to questions using information provided (As in qns 5-7, complete,relevant, socially acceptable answers…)

今日はTOEIC Speaking Test の、問題5〜7 (応答問題）に関するヒントをご紹介します。

この応答問題では、テレビ、映画、ショッピングなど、さまざまなテーマについて質問されます。
自然な言葉で答え、テーマの内容から逸れないようにし、社会的に攻撃的な回答は避けましょう。
完全で、関連性があり、社会的に受け入れられる答え（もちろん、正しい文法、語彙、一貫性、発音も）で回答できれば、より多くの得点を獲得できるでしょう。

(ソーシャルメディアを何に使いますか？)

(私はそれを多くのことに使います、例えば …)

問題8〜10は提示された情報に基づく応答問題です。
さきほどの問題5〜7のように、完全で、関連性があり、社会的に受け入れられる回答が必要です。

Warm greeting everyone, it feels like spring is in the air and we’ll be saying sayonara to Old Man Winter soon. Here are some more pointers on the TOEIC speaking test: As I mentioned in the earlier blog, there are 11 questions in the speaking section Qns 1-2 You’ll read a text aloud. You’ll be evaluated on1. Pronunciation 2. Intonation 3. Stress. Please practice those three things.
Qn 3 Describe a picture. Describe what you see in the picture making sure not to imagine something that’s not in the picture. Evaluation points: as qn 1-2 above, plus grammar,vocabulary and cohesion.

今日はTOEIC Speaking Testに関するアドバイスをご紹介します。
以前のブログでも少し触れましたが、このスピーキングテストには１１の問題数があります。
そのうちの１から４の問題についてご紹介します。

問題１-２：音読問題
短い英文を音読します。
評価基準は、「発音」「イントネーション」「アクセント」です。
これら３つに注意して練習するようにしましょう。

問題３-４：写真描写問題
写真をみて内容を説明します。
写真に写っていないものを想像するのではなく、写真に写っているものを説明してください。
問題１-２の評価基準に加えて、「文法」「語彙」「一貫性」が評価されます。

【TOEIC】リスニングとリーディングのテスト時間や問題数について

TOEIC General Overview

Hello everyone,

Today I’ll talk a little bit about the TOEIC test. The most popular version of the TOEIC test is the TOEIC listening and reading test and as the name implies it’s separated in two sections, Listening and Reading.

The Listening section tests how well you understand spoken English. It consists of four parts and contains 100 questions. Students need to answer a variety of questions based on statements, questions, conversations or talks recorded in English. The total time is approximately 45 minutes.

The Reading section includes three parts, testing how well you understand written English. You will read a variety of passages and respond to 100 questions at your own pace. The total time is 75 minutes.

Testing for TOEIC can be pretty hard and not an especially pleasant experience but in Kensington we make it as fun as possible while of course hitting our targets and making sure that the student progresses.

今日はTOEICテストについて少しお話ししたいと思います。
TOEICテストの中で最も人気があるのは「TOEIC Listening & Reading Test」です。
その名前の通り、リスニングとリーディングの２つのセクションに分かれています。

リスニングセクションでは、話されている英語をどれだけよく理解しているかをテストします。
４つのパートで構成され、100問の設問が含まれています。
受験者は、英語で録音された質問や会話などに基づいたさまざまな設問に答える必要があります。
合計時間は約４５分です。

リーディングセクションには３つのパートがあり、書かれた英語をどれだけよく理解しているかをテストします。
さまざまな文章を読み、100問の設問に答えます。
リスニングテストとは違い、自分で時間配分をして解答していきます。
合計時間は７５分です。

TOEICテストは簡単ではないので、TOEICに向けての学習は特に楽しい経験ではないかもしれません。

Warm greetings everyone and I hope you’re keeping warm and healthy in the chilly February weather. Here are some more pointers on the TOEIC speaking test: 1. Background noise Most likely there will be background noise from other test takers, so don’t be distracted, focus on your speaking. 2. Use correct grammar and avoid slang. The goal here is your answer to be clearly understood by the examiner who’ll listen to the recording. 3. Speaking tone: Try not to sound like a robot. Vary your tone naturally just like when you’re speaking to a real person in front of you.
