福岡マラソン

Hi everyone, as I may have mentioned once or twice I’m trying to get people interested in joining the Fukuoka Marathon with me and so far we have 10 people taking part.
皆さんどうも。1度か2度触れたかもしれませんが、私、皆さんに一緒に福岡マラソンに参加するのに興味を持っていただこうとしているところでして、今までのところ10名の方に参加いただくことになっています。

Of course taking on a full marathon is a big commitment, so if you think that is too much why not try the fun run instead?
I will of course be training by myself so if anyone ever feels like joining me at 6:30 by Muromi river let me know but I won’t be holding my breath. I thought it would be nice if we could get some group training on the go too so I will be in Ohori park this Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m for anyone who is interested. My schedule is pretty full but I’ll always let you know in advance when I can make some time at the weekends.
もちろん、フルマラソンへの参加はとても大変なことです。なので、もしあまりにも大変だとお思いでしたら、代わりにファンランへの参加はいかがでしょう？
無論私は自分で練習をするつもりでして、室見川そば、 (午前) 6時30分からの私の練習に、もしどなたか加わりたければお知らせを、まあ、私が黙ってはいないでしょうけど。グループでの練習もいつもできたらいいなと思いますので、今週は土曜午前11時30分、大濠公園に私はいます。興味のある方はどなたでも加わって下さいね。私のスケジュールはかなりぎっしりですけれど、週末に時間が取れるときは必ず前もってお知らせします。

Of course you don’t have to join the marathon to come and train in the park with us, if you just feel like shedding a few kilos or getting in shape for the summer you are of course more than welcome.
もちろん、一緒に練習しに来るためには、必ずしもマラソンに参加する必要はなく、ただ何キロか体重を落としたい、あるいは夏に向けて体型を整えたいとお思いの方も大歓迎です。

For anyone who is really thinking of running the marathon in November I’d like it if we were connected by the Nike running application which you can download for free on your smartphone. That way we can chart each other’s progress and as I learned from last year competition (namely Tim) is a great motivator.
11月のマラソンで走ることを本気でお考えの方とは、スマートフォンに無料ダウンロードできる、ナイキのランナー用アプリでつながれたらいいなと思います。そうすれば互いの上達をグラフで見ることができ、去年の競争 (つまりティムと) で学べたんですが、これはすごくいい動機づけになります。

It may seem early but it took me ages to get in shape last year so I think the sooner the better. The application period is from the 18th of April to the 23rd of May.
まだ早いように思われるかもしれませんが、去年は体作りをするのにかなり長い時間がかかりましたので、早いに越したことはないと思います。お申し込みの受け付けは、4月18日から5月23日までです。

ティムの「ケンジントン・ロブスター養殖場」計画

A few years back when I was thinking of my professional future, I realised that since I’ll probably never work full time for a Japanese company (for various reasons), I’d probably have to start my own business, if I wanted to have any chance of earning a semi-good living.
自分の将来のキャリア像を模索していた遡ること数年前、自分はおそらく日本企業で正社員として働くことは絶対にないだろうから (理由はいろいろありますが)、もしそこそこの暮らしを何とかしていきたいなら、多分起業しないといけないだろうな、ということに気づきました。

One of my not so fantastic ideas was to buy a big fish tank and start breeding lobsters because….hmmm… everyone loves lobsters. My initial plan was to buy two lobsters, a male and a female and once they mate, they’ll probably have millions of babies and when their babies grow up, worst case scenario, I can be eating lobsters for the rest of my life.
大してイケてないビジネスのアイデアとして1つ思いついたのは、大きな水槽を買ってロブスターを繁殖させることで、というのは…えーっと、みんなロブスターが大好きだからです。最初は、オスとメス2匹のロブスターを買って、つがいになればおそらく子供がたくさん生まれて、それが成長したら、最悪ひょっとすると一生ロブスターを食べることになるかも…という計画でした。

Before getting my great new business started, I started doing some research on lobsters. My initial research entailed asking all my students if they know how long it takes for lobsters to mate; for which I mostly received blank stares from lovely people probably thinking. “Mate, we are here to study English and not answer to your stupid questions!!”
この素晴らしくイケてる (?) ビジネスを始めるにあたり、ロブスターに関する調査から取りかかりました。まず、私の生徒全員に、ロブスターがつがいになるにはどのくらいの時間がかかるか知っているか、と尋ねることになりましたが、たいていぽかんとした眼差しが返ってきまして、おそらく素敵な皆さんはこう考えていたのだと思います。「おい、私らは英語の勉強をしに来てるのであって、あなたのアホな質問に答えに来てるわけじゃないんですけど!!」

After doing some actual research I found out that they eat each other (So do hamsters!!) which is one reason that breeding is not very profitable. Thus, it is unfortunately very unlikely that my dream of a “Kensington Lobster Farm” will ever come to fruition.
ちゃんと実際に調査を進めた後で分かったのは、ロブスターは共食いをし (ハムスターもですけどね!!) 、そういうこともあって、繁殖させてもあまりもうからないということです。ゆえに、残念ながら、夢の「ケンジントン・ロブスター養殖場」実現の可能性はかなり低いということになりました。

In any case, here are some other fun facts regarding lobsters.
いちおう、ロブスターに関するその他おもしろい事実をここで紹介しましょう。

1. Lobsters aren’t red. They turn red when cooked, but in nature they can be green or yellow or even bright blue.
ロブスターの体は赤くありません。火を通すと赤くなりますが、基本、体の色は緑や黄色、あるいは鮮やかな青でさえあったりします。

2. Lobsters can grow up to four feet long and weigh as much as 40 pounds.
ロブスターは4フィート (約1.2m)・40ポンド (約18kg) にまで育つものもあります。

3. It is believed that lobsters can live as long as 100 years.
ロブスターの寿命は100年にもなることがあると推定されます。

4. They taste with their legs.
ロブスターは脚に味覚器官があります。

5. Once upon a time, they were the go-to prison food as they were cheap, too plentiful, and considered “tasteless.” Aaah, good times to be a criminal.
かつてロブスターは、安価で有り余るほど多く、かつ「味気ない」ものと思われていたため、獄中で供される食べ物的な扱いでした。いやー、犯罪者にはいい時代でしたね。

Riri in the small mirror

I pulled the drawer to get a comb but the first thing I reached for was the small mirror. I didn’t suppose that the girl in the bathroom mirror would also be in this small hand mirror that I keep in my vanity drawer by my bed. When I looked into the mirror, my face stared back at me. Nothing out of the ordinary. I relaxed but felt a little disappointed at the same time. I put the mirror down but I picked it up again after a couple of minutes. Nothing had changed and then… suddenly, my image vanished! I couldn’t see myself in the small hand held mirror. “Here we go again!” I said to myself. I got really nervous that I decided to put the mirror down on my bed and walked over to the window to look at the world outside the window. That world was smiling in the Sunday morning sunshine. The flowers, trees and houses in the neighborhood looked exceedingly beautiful. I wanted to quickly run downstairs to say good morning to my mom without taking another look at the mirror lying on my bed. But I found myself unable to do anything else before taking another peek at the mirror.
I nervously picked up the mirror and…Riri was there! “There you’re again.” I said after a few minutes of silence. “Looks like you’re in all the mirrors in this house. Are you stalking me?” “May be you’re the one stalking me, Mari chan,” said Riri in the mirror. Strangely we both laughed though a little nervously. I tried to relax but I couldn’t get myself to calm down. I had a heap of questions for this girl called Riri in the mirror. “Did you say you don’t live in the mirror, Riri? Are you real?” I asked. “What do you mean real? She said, not smiling this time. I’m REAL! Look she moved a little out of the way to show me “her” room. This is my room and this is my stuff.” The room looked exactly like our bedroom but without Riku’s bed. “Do you know Riku?” I asked. “Of course I know him. He’s my young brother. He’s watching TV downstairs,” she answered. “Now don’t try to be funny, Riri. I’m not amused. It appears you’ve been stalking me. You know everything about me, so you’re pretending to be me.” Riri was getting more and more upsetting. “Well, mirror girl, I said. Do you have a dad? What does he do?” “Yes, Mari chan, the mirror girl said. I have a dad. He’s a salesman and he’s sleeping right now. He usually sleeps in on Sundays. I got a mom too, if you want to know. She can be a big pain sometimes but she loves us and really takes care of the family. She’s now downstairs making breakfast.”

Things I miss.
懐かしいもの。

The pub. For a small town it has a huge number of pubs, they’re open from 11 a.m, everyone goes there and I’ve had some great times in them.
パブ。小さい町のわりに非常にたくさんのパブがありまして、午前11時から開いており、皆行きます。私もそこで大いに楽しみました。

The food. I know you all associate Britain with bad food but I love some of the local products especially, beef, sausages and bacon, and smoked salmon.
食べ物。皆さんがイギリスをまずい食べ物と結びつけるとは分かっていますが、地元の産物には私が大好きなものもあります。特に牛肉、ソーセージ、ベーコン、スモークサーモンです。

The accent. I’ve had to change my accent almost completely to make myself understood here and I feel most at home speaking to people from my hometown although everyone laughs at the way I talk now.
なまり。ここ日本で自分の言うことを通じさせるためには、ほぼ完全に喋り方を変えなければなりません。で、同郷の人達に話しかけると、一番くつろいだ気分になれます。今の私の話し方では皆に笑われますけどね。

The summer. My hometown is beautiful in the summer, and it’s so busy we have people from all over the world visiting every year and it’s really colourful.
夏。故郷の夏は美しく、毎年世界中の人々が訪れて非常ににぎわいます。実に華やかです。

Things I don’t miss.
懐かしくないもの。

Service: After being spoiled by Japanese service for so long, it came as quite a shock to be treated rudely in shops and restaurants. Oban hasn’t quite grasped the concept of service yet.
サービス。日本のサービスにかなり長い期間甘やかされた後では、(あちらの) 店やレストランでの無礼な応対はかなり衝撃的なものとなりました。オーバンは未だサービスの何たるかをつかめていないのです。

The winter. Cold, long, dark. My hometown is one of the wettest areas of Scotland which is no mean feat.
冬。寒い、長い、暗い。故郷はスコットランドの中で一番湿っぽい場所の1つで、なかなかすごいんです。

Public transport. Late, slow, infrequent. Thank goodness we can start driving at 17 in Scotland.
公共交通機関。遅れる、のろのろ、本数が少ない。幸い、スコットランドでは17歳から車の運転ができます。

本格始動！

本格始動！ 

皆様こんにちは。ケンジントン英会話スタッフの岩村です。

私は2月から皆様と同じように、本格的に英語の勉強を始めました！
まず私が始めたことは、予習サイトのArticleを声に出して読んで読んで読みまくることですッ！
(声に出して読むと自然に頭にも入ってくるしとてもいいですよ！)
わからない単語があれば辞書を引き意味を確認、その繰り返しです。初めはわからな単語が多すぎてArticleの内容が全く頭に入ってきませんでしたが、何回も読むにつれ単語も覚え、意味も分かるようになってきました。(まだ半分ぐらいしか理解できてないと思いますが・・・汗)

次に、Articleを読んだら読みっぱなしではなく、必ず復習をすることです。
その時は単語の意味を理解し覚えていても、時間がたつとすーぐ忘れてしまうので・・・。
本当、私はいいことも悪いこともあっという間に忘れてしまうんです(._.)

っと、私の勉強法は本当に基本的なことで、参考にならないかと思いますが。。。
毎日少しずつ英文を読んでいくと、読むスピードも速くなり、英検やTOEICなど試験を受ける方にはもってこいですょ(^^)/

「骨くん」とふるさと – その1

I’m excited.
わくわくしちゃうぜ。

My younger brother David (real name) a.k.a Bones (you’ll know why when you meet him), is coming to visit me with his girlfriend this spring. It’s been 8 years since I last saw him and he has never met his nephew or niece, so as you can understand I’m really looking forward to it.
弟のデービッド (本名) またの名を「骨くん」(彼に会えば分かります) が、この春ガールフレンドと私に会いに来るんです。彼に会うのは8年ぶりで、彼の甥や姪 (私の息子や娘) にまだ一度も会ったことがありません。なので、本当に私が楽しみにしているのが分かりますよね。

We will take a short trip in the second week of April to Aso and Oita and then up to Kyoto Nara and Miyajima, which should be fun.
4月の2週目にはちょっと旅行に行ってきます。阿蘇、大分を回ってそれから京都、奈良、宮島をめぐります。きっと楽しいでしょう。

His visit is bringing back memories of the last time I went home and since my lesson 2 weeks later is about describing your country I would like to tell you a little about where I’m from.
彼が来るので、前回ふるさとに帰ったときのことを思い出します。2週間後の私のレッスンのテーマは「自分の国について語る」なので、私の出身地について少しお話ししたいと思います。

My hometown is called Oban and it’s on the northwest coast of Scotland. It is basically a fishing and tourism port and gets really busy in the summer because it is the main route to the western isles which are extremely sparsely populated and really beautiful. The population is small, only 8,500 people but in the height of summer there can be as many as 25,000 people staying in the town.
私のふるさとはオーバンといって、スコットランド北西の沿岸にあります。基本的には漁業と観光の港町です。西岸の群島は人があまり住んでおらず非常に美しく、町は群島への途上にあるので、夏にはとてもにぎわいます。人口は少なく、ほんの8,500人ですが、夏の盛りには、25,000人もの人が町に滞在することもあります。

It’s a nice place to grow up I suppose, clean, relatively safe, and a lot of nature around to enjoy if you are an outdoor sports enthusiast. It’s famous for its salmon fishing, and is good if you like things like scuba diving, mountain biking/climbing, hiking, camping etc, but only in the summer really, the winters are freezing and it starts getting dark at three in the afternoon, on the other hand it stays light to 10 o’clock or later in the summer, which I miss.
育つのにいい場所だと思います。清潔で比較的安全、そしてもしアウトドアスポーツ好きの方であれば、豊かな自然とあちこちで触れ合うことができます。シャケ漁で有名で、スキューバダイビング、サイクルトレッキング、山登り、ハイキング、キャンプなどが好きであればとてもいいところです。ただし、いいのは本当に夏だけで、冬は凍えるように寒く、午後3時には日が暮れ始めます。逆に夏には10時や10時過ぎでも空が明るいです。懐かしいですね。

Contrary to what many people believe when they first meet me, we do speak English, but since we are located near the highlands of Scotland there are a few people who learn Gaelic, the original language of Scotland and if you head out to the western or northern islands you will still find some elderly people who speak the language fluently, although the number drops every year. 多くの人が、まず私に会うと私達スコットランド人は英語を話すものだと思うのですが、私達はスコットランドの高地にいるものですから、スコットランドで元来話されているゲール語を学ぶ人達が少しばかりおり、西岸や北岸の群島に足を伸ばしてみれば、数は毎年減っているものの、まだゲール語を流暢に話す年配の人々を見かけます。(つづく)

Riri in the mirror

Riri in the mirror

The TV show was almost over. I didn’t feel like watching television anymore, anyway. I went upstairs to change from the jammies into normal clothes. Mom would be up soon. Dad usually gets up to eat breakfast and goes right back to bed after the meal on most Sunday mornings. Most of my friends’ dads do likewise. I guess they work really hard on weekdays, so they feel really tired on weekends. I think our dads’ bosses make them work…you know ordering them to do this and that just like teachers at school make us do stuff. When you’re a kid you have to go to school and get bossed around by teachers. When you grow up, you enter the world of work and start getting bossed during the first hour you spend at work. The world is a tough place.

As I was getting dressed, I heard mom yelling at Riku for watching TV in his jammies. “Oh shut up mom.” I said under my breath. You see? Pain in a kid’s life is not inflicted only by teachers, playground bullies and classroom snobs, parents do their part perfectly well. But when pushed too hard or sometimes not even pushed, kids are capable of returning some of that pain in their life to their parents and teachers. I see that pain sometimes in my mom’s and homeroom teacher’s faces. The big tantrums that Riku throws once in a while, irritates the heck out of mom.

私だけの単語帳作り、を楽しもう！

皆様こんにちは。スタッフの山下です。
2/4(木)19:30・20:30の、TOEICクラスお試しレッスンにご参加いただいた皆様、ありがとうございました。頂いた貴重なご意見は今後のクラス作り・ネット上での情報発信に役立てさせていただきます。

前回のブログでも少し触れましたが、私めが某通信教育会社の初級者向けTOEICコースから、英語を習い事として始めたのは、20代前半のことです。まず気づいたのは、「単語が分かれば大体の意味がわかる」ということです。単語の意味さえ分かれば、分かるまでは「何を伝えたいのよーこの文は!?」とちょっともやっとイラっとした気分があっという間に吹っ飛びます。
というわけで知らない単語が出てくるたびに、いちいち辞書を引いては(当時はスマホアプリもなく、kensington_IMG_0425

否応なくぶ厚い辞書とお友達)書き込む、この繰り返しに病みつきになり、写真のように用例を付箋に書き込んでくっつけてみたり、単語帳を作ってみたり。

全部をものにしなくてもいいので、集めるだけ集めて、興味があるものから使っていこう、くらいの気持ちで、完全に楽しみ優先でしたね。(この「趣味」を公表すると、誰か英会話の先生が引いていたのを思い出しますが。)

英語ニュースやラジオ、英語字幕のないドラマを見ているときは、綴りが分からず苦労することもありますが、これかな？あれかな？といろいろ調べてみて、数年後に判明したものもありますwこれはプチ感動ものw

今回もいち学習者として、書かせていただきました。少しでもお役に立てれば幸いです。

バレンタインデー

As most of you already know, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in quite a unique way in Japan. Unlike other countries where most usually men buy chocolate or flowers to women they are attracted to, in Japan women have to buy to do the buying for the men regardless of whether they are actually attracted to them or not. I thought that was pretty odd when I first came to Japan, but I like chocolate so I am quite thankful to receive it every year.
大抵の方がご存知のように、日本でのバレンタインデーの祝い方はかなり独特です。男性が好きな女性にチョコレートや花を買うのが通例である他の国々とは違って、日本では女性が男性に、本当に好きでもそうでなくても買い物をしなければなりません。初めて日本に来たときは結構変だなあと思いましたが、チョコは好きなので、毎年チョコがもらえるのをとてもありがたく思っています。

Valentine’s day and love is going to be the very appropriate subject of my classes in Yakuin on Feb 12th and Feb 13th and in Akasaka on Feb 13th and 14th, so we’ll have a chance to talk about it more in depth.
「バレンタインデーと愛」は、この時期にぴったりのレッスンテーマです。私の2/12(金)13(土)の薬院、2/13(土)14(日)の赤坂のクラスで、もっといろいろ詳しく話せるかなと思います。

Today I’d like to talk about different ways to say that you like something.
今回は、好きな物事について話すときの、いろいろな言い方をご紹介したいと思います。

1) I love doing something. This means that I like something very much.
ex. I love running.
I love 〜. を使うと、「〜が大好きだ」という意味になります。
例. 走るのが大好きです。
2) I’m into something. This means I’m interested in something.
ex. I’m really into Jazz.
I’m into 〜. を使うと、「〜に興味がある」という意味になります。
例.  ジャズにとてもはまっています。
3) I’m keen on something.
ex. I’m really keen on Christmas.
I’m keen on 〜. 「〜に熱中している」
例. クリスマスに本当にのぼせています。4) I’m fond of something.
ex. I’m really fond of Jane, she’s such a kind person.
I’m fond of 〜. 「〜を愛好する」
例. ジェーンが非常に好きです。全く優しい人なので。

5) Something is to my liking. (a little formal)
ex. The food and service were to my liking.
〜 is to my liking. 「〜を気に入っています」(やや硬い言い方)
例. 食事とサービスが気に入りました。

6) I’m crazy about something.
ex. He’s crazy about snowboarding, he talks about it every single day.
I’m crazy about 〜. 「〜に夢中である、惚れている」
例. 彼、スノボに狂ってて、毎日いちいちその話が出るのよ。

7) I’m addicted to something.
ex. I’m addicted to good coffee, I drink more than 5 cups a day.
I’m addicted to 〜. 「〜に中毒している、夢中である」
例. うまいコーヒーに病みつきで、1日に5杯よりもっと飲んでるんだ。

8) I fancy something/someone. (British)
ex. I really fancy Jessica Alba, she’s gorgeous
I fancy 〜.「〜が気に入っている」(イギリス英語)
例. ジェシカ・アルバ、マジ好きだぜ、超美人だし。
