Practice and Perform

Hello there, hope you’re taking it easy on Sunday, if you have Sunday off work, like I do. It’s time for a short language study/learning advice (for me and you our students). The 50 minutes you spend every week or twice a month speaking with a native speaker or your classmates is very important for your language learning experience. Please use that time to practice and perform. If you’re a private student, don’t be afraid to prepare and make a short presentation on the topic or something else (if you’re not interested in the class topic).

Studying and living in America

Hope you’re having a good weekend everyone. It’s Saturday and time to share a little more about myself. I’ll stick to our theme this week (USA). I studied, lived and worked in the USA, particularly in Upstate New York. I think my life in the USA turned me from a shy and timid young man into a confident man. From the time I arrived in the US, I heard the phrase “Yes, you can!”  over and over.  And within  6 months of my arrival in the USA, I learned how to drive, got a Driver’s License and bought a used car -my very first car.
I think one of the greatest things about America is the “Can do” attitude.

みなさん、良い週末をお過ごしですか。
土曜日なので、今日は自分自身について少しお話したいと思います。
今週のテーマ「The USA」に関連してお話します。

私はアメリカ、特にニューヨーク州北部で勉強し、住み、働きました。
アメリカでの生活で、私は恥ずかしがり屋で臆病な青年から、自信に満ちた男に変わったと思います。
アメリカに到着した時から、「Yes, you can!（あなたはできる！）」という言葉を何度も聞きました。
そして、アメリカに到着してから6か月以内に、運転の仕方を学び、運転免許証を取得し、最初の車である中古車を購入しました。

アメリカの最大の魅力のひとつは「Can do（できる）」という姿勢だと思います。

【文法】

(1) 現在完了形

Have you ever been/tried…
(… に行ったこと／を試したことはありますか？)

(2) 将来やりたいことについて話すときの「would you like」

[例] Would you like to visit the grand canyon?
(グランドキャニオンに訪れたいですか？)

(3)「heard of」「think of」

[例]
Have you ever heard of Oprah Winfrey? What do you think of her?
(オプラ・ウィンフリーについて聞いたことがありますか？彼女についてどう思いますか？)

Hmm..no, I’ve never heard of her. Who’s she?

【TOEIC対策】穴埋め問題を解くコツ

Greetings everyone and hope you’re keeping cool and healthy in the steamy summer. I’ve been giving short tips on the TOEIC speaking test in the last few blogs. Let’s now move on to the grammar test tips. Today’s Tip is: Please read the whole sentence and understand it. Don’t rush. If you rush you may choose the wrong answer (especially the almost correct answer or the “fake”)

Example:  Q. The team’s great performance in the championship________their good teamwork. 

  1. resulted in
  2. as resulted 
  3. resulted from
  4. to result

If you didn’t understand the sentence clearly, you may choose answer (1) which is wrong. The the right answer is (3)

過去数回のブログで、TOEIC Speaking Testのコツをご紹介してきましたが、ここからは文法のコツに移りましょう。

今日お伝えしたいことは次のとおりです。

文章全体を読んで理解しましょう。
急がないでください。急ぐと、間違った答えを選んでしまうかもしれません（特に、ほぼ正しい選択肢やひっかけ問題）

[例題：穴埋め問題]

The team’s great performance in the championship________their good teamwork.

(1) resulted in
(2) as resulted
(3) resulted from
(4) to result

文章を明確に理解していなければ、間違った答えである(1)を選んでしまうかもしれません。

正しい答えは(3)です。

The world is changing a whole lot nowadays, and is focusing on an online work environment where people are beginning to work from home.

In Japan, many people call this remote work or “telework”, but the proper term in English is…well, there are many ways to say it. “I work remotely” “I work from home” “I do remote work” etc.

It’s usually not the case that people say “Telework”, because that generally means that you’re using a phone or work in a call centre. The proper term for the internet is remote work or “I work online”.

近頃、世界は大きく変化しており、人々が自宅で仕事を始めるための、オンライン作業環境に焦点を合わせています。

日本では、多くの人がこれを「remote work（リモートワーク）」または「telework（テレワーク）」と呼んでいますが、英語での適切な用語は…、まあ、それを言うには多くの方法があります。

通常英語では、「telework」と言われることはありません。
なぜなら、「telework」は電話を使っているか、コールセンターで働いていることを意味するためです。

Just Say It

Here’s a challenge: instead of thinking very carefully about how to say things sometimes, just let go of the caution, take a risk and just say what you want.

What I mean by this is that you will probably make mistakes and maybe even use the wrong words – but by just saying it, it allows not only you, but the teacher to find where you make errors and fix them.

Being careful about your words is very useful for many reasons – you can start slow and then get faster over time as you make the correct sentence a habit. That said, so is just saying it out loud, too. That shows where the errors are, so we can correct and improve them. Sometimes you need to run instead of walk.

【デニー先生】ファスティング(断食)を控え、朝食を食べ始めました

Holding off on Fasting

As many students know, I tend to be pretty strict with my nutrition and diet and like to stay in good shape. Many students also are aware that I basically never eat breakfast and do a lot of fasting. It’s very healthy for you.

That said, I’ve started eating breakfast again! The reason is because if I’m exercising a lot, I need a lot of calories – the problem is when I’m busy with work, it’s very, very hard to get enough calories, exercise, work and fast at the same time.

I started to feel very tired around June and my sleep was not good either. After some thinking as to why, I realized that I was not eating enough calories – so, I stopped fasting and now eat a big bowl of oatmeal every morning. I feel a lot better, and a lot stronger, too.

Diets and lifestyles are always changing, and it’s important to be aware of how you feel and how you can fix it!

私の生徒さんの多くが知っているように、私は自分の栄養と食事にかなり厳しい傾向があり、体調・体型を保ちたいと思っています。
多くの生徒さんはまた、私が基本的に朝食を食べないことと、断食をよくしていることを知っています。
これはとても健康的なことです。

そうは言っても、私は再び朝食を食べ始めました！
その理由は、私がたくさん運動をしている時は、多くのカロリーが必要だからです。
問題は、仕事で忙しいとき、十分なカロリーを得たり、運動、仕事、そして断食をしたりするのが非常に難しいということです。

6月頃からとても疲れ始め、睡眠も良くありませんでした。
理由について考えてみたところ、十分なカロリーを摂取していないことに気づきました。
断食をやめ、毎朝大きなボウルに入れたオートミールを食べています。
とても調子が良く、強くなったと感じます。

食事とライフスタイルは常に変化しているので、自分がどのように感じ、それをどのように修正できるかを知っておくことが重要です。

Specifically

The word specifically has many use cases, especially in regards to more professional forms of conversation.

To be “specific” is to be detail-oriented, i.e. “I’m very specific about my financial budget”.

“Specifically” is when you refer to something in a topic, i.e. “I like cakes, specifically cheese cakes.”. In other words, this means you like cakes, and cheese cakes are your favourites.

It’s a useful, and flexible word that can be applied in many contexts.

Specifically（特に、明確に、具体的に言うと）

この「specifically」という単語は、特に専門的な会話形式で多く使われます。

「specific」であるということは、細かく几帳面であるということです。
なので、「I’m very specific about my financial budget（私は自分の資金予算について非常に細かいです）」と、言えます。

「specifically」とは、会話のトピック内の何かを指す場合です。
なので、「I like cakes, specifically cheese cakes.（私はケーキが好きです。特にチーズケーキが。）」
言い換えれば、これはあなたがケーキが好きであることを意味し、チーズケーキがあなたのお気に入り、ということです。

「specifically」は、いろんな文脈で使える便利で柔軟な単語です。

Possessions

As most of my students already know, I tend to be a bit of a minimalist, so I don’t own so many things. I don’t really spend much money either – most of the time I’m just using the things I already own.

I’d say my most prized possession at the moment is my low D whistle. It’s a long, Irish flute and I’ve been practicing it almost daily, as well as making my own music. I’m a beginner, and playing it smoothly is quite challenging, but I’m enjoying it a lot, and it lets me express my creativity outside of writing and painting. What are your “prized” possessions?
