AMERICAN ENGLISH SPELLING AND BRITISH ENGLISH SPELLING

There are quite a few differences in British and American spelling. In British English the spelling of words absorbed by other languages (Latin or Greek) has in many cases been kept intact while Americans in many cases changed the spelling to better reflect the pronunciation of the word.

Here are three notable differences:

1) WORDS ENDING WITH –OUR / -OR
Most words ending in an unstressed –our in British English end in –or in American English.
UK : Colour/ flavour/ harbour/ labour/ neighbour/ rumour
US: Color/ flavor/ harbor/ labor / neighbor / rumor

日常英会話レッスン – アメリカ英語の綴りと、イギリス英語の綴り – Part 1

イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の綴りには、かなり多くの違いがあります。イギリス英語では、他の言語（ラテン語やギリシャ語）に吸収された単語の綴りが、そのまま残っている場合が多く見られます。一方、アメリカ英語では、単語の綴りが、より実際の発音に即したものに変えられていることが多いです。

特に大きな違いを3つ挙げてみます。

1) 語尾 -OUR と -OR
イギリス英語では強勢の置かれない -our で終わる単語が、アメリカ英語では -or で終わることがほとんどです。
UKはイギリス、USはアメリカ：
色／風味／港／骨折り仕事／近所の人／噂

今週末のレッスン内容 – Friends&Friendship

Jaimie likes to joke that this class should be very difficult for me to teach as I don’t have any friends. He’s right, what was I thinking?

In any case, for those of you out there with actual friends. it’s a great chance to be able to talk about them while also practicing some really useful grammar we haven’t used that much. The idea and the level 1 class are almost entirely from a lesson plan that Anthony made for us for his job interview.

Have I mentioned how happy we are to have Anthony working with us? We are!

– to prove effective or successful:

I do not believe that the new plan is going to work out as planned; we may have to start considering alternative solutions.

うまくいく

– 効果的である・成功であるとわかる

新しい計画は、計画通りうまくいくとは思えない。代替案を考え始めなければならないかもしれない。

How to study English – learn collocations

Hi there everyone in my last blog I talked about phrasal verbs and today I’m going to talk about collocations. Collocations are words that you often find in pairs, today we will look at 3 of the more typical collocation words.

have

Have has a lot of collocation words such as

have a break

have a good time

have a haircut

have a shower

have a problem

do the laundry

do your makeup

do nothing

do business

make

make a mess

make a mistake

make money

make time

make a difference

make a profit.

These are just a few of them, believe me there are loads more and I will show some in future blogs but my advice would be to start with these three and stay tuned for more in the future. The best way to learn these is probably in context so finding online lists with supporting sentences is a great way to get started.

みなさんこんにちは。私の前回のブログで句動詞について話しました。今日はコロケーション（語と語の繋がり）について話そうと思います。コロケーションはよく複数の語彙のペアで見られるものです。今日は典型的な３つのコロケーションをみていきましょう。

Have

Haveは下記のようにたくさんのコロケーションがあります。

休憩をとる

いい時間を過ごす

髪を切る

シャワーをあびる

問題がある

洗濯する

化粧をする

何もしない

仕事をする

make

散らかす

ミスをする

お金を稼ぐ

時間をつくる

違いが生まれる

利益を得る

これらは少しの例です。本当はもっとありますのでまたブログで紹介しますが、私のアドバイスはまずこの３つから始めて、そのあともっと学習することです。コロケーションを学習する上で一番いい方法は、前後の文脈を理解することなので、始めは文章として書いてあるものをネットで探して勉強することです。

今週末のレッスン内容- Making small talk

Hello again, this weekend’s lessons’ theme in Akasaka, Yakuin and Ropponmatsu will be “Making Small Talk” . Making small talk may seem like the easiest thing in the world to do but it can be pretty tricky in a foreign language.

In the first part of the lesson we will be covering simple things like greetings, talking about the weather, commenting on appearance, weekend activities, current topics, and the kinds of things people talk about at work on a Monday morning.

In the second part of the lesson we will be practicing the kinds of things you may talk about when catching up with an old friend.

Hello everyone,　one of the things that I find quite difficult when travelling is taking a bus. Actually when I first came to Fukuoka I avoided taking the bus at all costs. as it was impossible for me to communicate with anyone and I had no idea where each bus was going.

These are some expressions to help you with taking the bus when travelling abroad.

Which bus goes to Tenjin?

How often does bus number 15 come?

When is the next bus to Hakata station?

Does the bus to Canal city stop here?

Where do I catch the bus to Yakuin station?

Is this the bus that goes to Nakasu? (when you see a bus coming)
