How to study English -Make as many mistakes as possible!

Hi everyone, I’m going to give you some strange advice today and it is this….Make as many mistakes as you can!

Once you make a truly embarrassing mistake you will never forget the words you mistook ever again! Here are some examples from my Japanese learning past.

恐ろしい大根ハンバーグ下さい　 When trying to orderおろし大根ハンバーグ from Hotto Motto.

Me: 美しい　

Girl behind counter: 本当に？

Me:美しい醤油

When trying to ask for 薄口醤油 in a convenience store in Yamaguchi.

子供の頃は眩しかったよ。When trying to explain to a student that I was a little poor in my childhood..

自己紹介を起こすところだった When trying to explain that I’d nearly caused a traffic accident （交通事故) to my Japanese teacher.

All of these things I remember clear as day and I will never forgot them. The reason, though, that I made these mistakes is because I realised there was no use trying to learn a language without going out and trying to use it.

What I want to say is, you should never be afraid to try and use the language you are learning for fear of making a mistake. I haven’t taught English in any other countries, but I feel like a lot of my students have a deep fear of not being able to say what they want to say perfectly, and I want to tell you that not only is it perfectly okay to make mistakes, but it is really the only way to learn anything. Don’t forget, not everyone(including natives) speaks perfect English. There are more non-native English speakers in the world than native speakers now.

We have a phrase in English that I think applies quite well to this situation.

You’ve got to crawl before you walk.

So get on out there and fall on your face a few times! It will do you a world of good.

みなさんこんにちは！今日はみなさんにちょっと変わったアドバイスをします。それは、、できるだけ沢山ミスをしよう！です。　本当に恥ずかしい間違いを一度したら、二度とその単語は忘れないでしょう。

私が以前日本語から学んだいくつかのこと紹介します。

ほっともっとでおろし大根ハンバーグを頼もうとしたとき、

恐ろしい大根ハンバーグをくださいと言ってしまいました。

山口のコンビニエンスストアで、薄口醬油があるか聞こうとしたとき、

私：美しい

女性店員：本当に？

私：美しい醤油

生徒さんに、「子どもの頃は貧しかったよ」と説明しようとしたとき、「子どもの頃は眩しかったよ」

日本語の先生に、「交通事故を起こしそうだった」と説明しようとしたとき、「自己紹介を起こしそうだった」

、、、これらのことは鮮明に覚えていますし、忘れないでしょう。私がこれらのミスをしたのは、外で使わないと全く意味がないことに気づいたからです。私が言いたいのは、ミスを恐れずにどんどん英語を話してほしいということです。日本以外で英語を教えたことはありませんが、日本の生徒さんは、完璧に話せないことに深い恐れを持っているように感じます。ミスをするのは全く問題ないし、その他に学ぶ術はありません。忘れないでください、みんな完璧な英語は話していません。(ネイティブでさえ)

いまは、ネイティブではない人のほうが世界中に多くいます。私が思うにこの状況に相応しい、英語のフレーズがあります。

(あなたは歩けるようになる前にハイハイをしていた。だからそこを乗り越えて何度も頭をぶつけていいんです！それがあなた自身の世界をよくするでしょう。)

Travel English-“At the department store”

Hi there, with Golden Week on its way and summer coming soon I expect a few of you will be planning some overseas travel. I’ve notice that my students seem to love visiting foreign department stores so here is a little guide to the names of the different departments you will find in them.

Please remember that they may differ from country to country for example in the U.K we call the 薬局　 a Chemist’s but in the U.S it’s called a Drugstore and in the U.K we tend to use er’s at then end of words to describe the shop whereas in the U.S they use ~store. For example 八百屋U.K Greengrocer’s U.S.A Vegetable Store. We also count floors of buildings differently too as you can see below.

Lastly, don’t forget that we use on for floor and in for department.

Yes, you can buy them in the books and stationery department on the fifth floor.　はい、5階の本と文具の売り場で買えます。

みなさんこんにちは。ゴールデンウィークですし夏ももうすぐですから、海外旅行を計画している人もいるのではないでしょうか？

私の生徒さんで、海外のデパートに行くのが大好きな人がいたのでここでは異なる売り場の言い方を紹介したいと思います。ただ、これは国によって言い方が違うということを覚えておいてくださいね。

例えば薬局ですが、イギリスではChemistといいますが、アメリカでは Drugstoreです。お店のことを言うとき、イギリスでは語尾にer’sがつく傾向がありますが、一方アメリカでは〜storeと言います。例えば「八百屋」ですが、イギリスではGreengrocer’s。アメリカではvegetable Storeです。また、建物の階数の表現の仕方も違いますので、こちらを見てください。

Today I’ll introduce another very usual British slang expression. It originally means to remove the intestines (guts) and other internal organs from an animal. In everyday conversation it means being very disappointed.

‘Gutted’ – a British slang term that means bitterly disappointed or upset.
Ex. I was absolutely gutted when I heard that you lost your job. Hang in there, mate!
3. 「はらわたを抜かれた」
Gutted – ひどく落ち込んだり、ショックを受けたりしていることを意味するブリティッシュ・スラングです。
例) お前の仕事がなくなったって聞いて、めっちゃショックやん。踏ん張れ、相棒！

今日は普段から使えるイギリススラングをご紹介します。本来の意味は動物の腸を取り除くという意味です。このスラングを使うときは、とっても落ち込んでる時に使います。

Hello everyone, a few weeks ago I introduced some very useful expressions to be able to ask and give simple expressions.

Here are a few more expressions to remember when you are travelling or when a foreign tourist asks you on the street.:

①Could you please tell me where the Windsor café is?

②Do you know how I can get there?

③Sorry, I don’t know where that is.

④Go straight on Watanabe Street.

⑤Turn left into Kokutai Street.

⑥Go past the Ohori park.

⑦You will see it on your right.

Today I’d like to introduce another very useful British slang word, “Knackered” which quite simply means “tired”. Do you sometimes feel knackered after a long day at work? I sometimes do especially if my first class is at 8:30 in the morning and my last class at 8:30 at night. Well you can enjoy your work and feel knackered at the same time!!

Knackered
‘Knackered’ – a great word and phrase used to describe your tiredness and exhaustion.
Ex. I am absolutely knackered today.

Knackered – 疲れを表すのに使われる素晴らしい言葉です。

Hello everyone, today we will introduce the phrase “in the black”. This means basically to not be losing money. The day after Thanksgiving Day in the US is called Black Friday, it’s one of the busiest shopping days of the year and it’s called Black Friday because it’s the start of the most profitable season for shop owners.

It’s quite interesting that there is a very similar expression in Japanese too, so it’s easy to remember.
