Dreams for the Future

I’m not really into dreaming very deeply about the future, if I’m honest. I do think about what I want for the future and I make plans always for the long term, but usually I’m very focused on today, tomorrow, and how I can make my life the way I want it to be next week.

I think dreams are very important though! It’s useful to remember what is important to you and to plan for it in the long term – say, in the next 5 or 10 years – but dreams come true when we focus on building towards them now. Incremental steps are much, MUCH more important than only dreaming big!

正直なところ、私は将来について大きな夢を見ることにそこまで興味はありません。
私は将来に何を望んでいるのかを考え、常に長期的な計画を立てていますが、通常は今日や明日に集中していて、また、来週の自分の人生をどのように実現できるかについて重きを置いています。

でも夢をみることはとても大事だと思います！
夢は、自分にとって何が重要かを心に留めておき、長期的（たとえば、今後５年または１０年）な計画を立てるのに有用です。
今、夢を実現することに焦点を当てることができれば、夢は実現します。
しかし、ただ単に大きな夢を見ることよりも、一歩ずつ進むことの方がはるかに重要だと思うのです。

Planning a trip

Hello everyone,

This weekend in our classrooms in Fukuoka city and online we are going to be doing one of my favourite lessons. It’s called “planning a trip” and I really love this class because it simulates a natural discussion with a friend at a cafe or a restaurant while using a lot of useful language and grammar that we have already covered in many classes along our Kensington curriculum.

Some of the things we’ll be doing is Small talk with a friend, ordering at a restaurant, asking and making suggestions and agreeing, disagreeing about different traveling options.

The corona situation in Fukuoka and across the world is steadily improving so it’s a good time to be preparing for a trip!!

Opinions and Feelings

Hi Everyone,

When I think about opinions and feelings, I usually try to separate them in a conversation, because a feeling is different to an opinion, but an opinion can be based off a feeling.

An opinion is a thought or idea of yours that represents something in an argument or debate. A feeling is a sensation in your body that comes from something you experience, whether it be hearing, touch, watching, etc.

Both of them are quite different, and in discussions (and most students know I love in-depth discussion!), you want to have opinions that are separate to the feeling you have, and remove as much influence as possible. This is called being objective. Creating an opinion from a feeling is usually subjective.

This topic is quite hard to understand in English, but it’s important, and when you learn to separate these things, you begin to think a lot clearer in English, too!

みなさん、こんにちは。

意見や感情について考えるとき、私は通常、会話の中でそれらを分けて考えるようにしています。
意見と感情は異なるものだからです。
しかし、意見は感情からきていることがあります。

意見とは、議論や討論の中で表すあなたの考えやアイディアです。
感情とは、聞く、触る、見るなど、あなたが経験することから生じる身体の感覚です。

この二つはかなり違います。
ディスカッションでは（ほとんどの生徒さんは私が徹底したディスカッションが大好きなことを知っていますね！）、自分の感情とは区別した意見を持ち、感情からの影響をできるだけ排除したいと考えます。
これはobjective(客観的)であると呼ばれます。
感情から意見を作り出すことは、通常、subjective(主観的)です。

このトピックを英語で理解するのはとても難しいですが、これは重要なことです。
意見と感情を分けて考えることを学ぶと、英語でもより明確に考えることができるようになります。

Hi there!

This weekend at Kensington Akasaka, Nishijin, Yakuin, and in our online classes the topic is fast food. 

This is a good class because it has a bit of both worlds, general discussion and practical roleplay.  We will be discussing different types of fast food, where, when, how often and what kind of fast food we like and then will move on to do a ropelay ordering food. We also have an opportunity to introduce some differences between British and American English. Sounds fun to me!

If you like Denny’s writing, read on.

That up there is a conditional statement, which is this week’s subject.

Conditionals tend to be seen as a very scary thing to work with in English, but in actuality it’s quite easy once you understand the basic rule that even refers back to basic programming languages and logical deduction.

If = A, Then = C.
If = B, Then = D.

If it’s sunny (A), I’ll go to the park (C).
If it’s rainy (B), I’ll stay home (D).

That’s pretty much it. The more advanced use cases start to apply past tense and future tense where it can be a bit tricky, but with our help as teachers you’ll be fine. Just remember the above rule, always!

あそこに見えるのは、今週のレッスントピックである「Conditional（条件文）」です。

Conditional (条件文) は非常に難しいものと思われる傾向がありますが、実際には基本的なルールを理解すればとても簡単です。
それはプログラミング言語や論理的な推論にまで関係する基本的なルールです。

・If = A, Then = C. (もしAであれば、C)
・If = B, Then = D. (もしBであれば、D)

If it’s sunny (A), I’ll go to the park (C).
(晴れたら、公園に行きます。)

If it’s rainy (B), I’ll stay home (D).
(雨が降ったら、家にいます。)

これだけです。
もう少し高度になると、過去形と未来形が適用され始め、少し注意が必要な場合がでてきます。
ですが講師のサポートがあるので大丈夫です。

We’ll be having conversations about How we’ve changed in character, physical appearance, (if at all) likes and dislikes over the years, Changes in our community or society and what changes we expect to happen in the future.
Grammar tools: present perfect /used to/time expressions/comparatives…

職場や自宅などでうまくコントロールできていることを願っています。

今週のレッスンに「Changes（変化）」というテーマがあります。
性格、見た目（もしあれば）、好き嫌いがどのように変化したか、コミュニティや社会の変化、そして将来どのような変化が予想されるかについて英語で話し合います。

使う文法：
現在完了形／used to／時間の表現／比較級

例：
I think Kyushu summers have become hotter than they used to be years ago.
(九州の夏は数年前よりも暑くなってきたと思います。 )

This neighborhood isn’t as quiet as it used to be when we moved here a decade ago.
(この近隣は１０年前にここに引っ越してきた時ほど静かではありません。 )
