“Mate”

Definition: “Mate” is a quintessentially British term for friend, buddy, or companion. It’s an informal and friendly way to address someone.

Example Sentences:

As an English teacher in Fukuoka, Japan, I try to use language with my students that can be used in any situation regardless of who they are speaking to. Many of our students learn English for work, travelling or for being able to communicate with foreign people better and in many of those instances the foreign people they will be talking to won’t be British. So, I only really introduce British slang to students that are interested in Britain or will be interacting with British people. 

In sum, exploring British slang, including words like “mate,” “knackered,” “gutted,” and “cheers,” offers a window into UK culture and language. As an English teacher, I introduce slang selectively, mainly to those interested in Britain or interacting with Brits. As English learners please remember that slang makes conversations colorful but also that it should be used thoughtfully. Whether you’re teaching, traveling, or just learning, slang can spice up your language skills and help you connect with people from different backgrounds.

今日のブログでは、「artistic license (脚色する)」というフレーズについて解説します。
これはよく使われる表現ですが、第二言語として英語を学ぶ人にとっては最初は少し混乱するかもしれません。
誰かが会話で「artistic license」という言葉を使った時でも、文脈を理解し全体の意味をつかめるように、この言葉を事前に知っておくと役に立つでしょう。

「artistic license」を文字通りに捉えると、芸術に関する何らかのライセンスを持っているということになります。
しかし、実際はライセンスとは何の関係もありません。

I went to the shop, bought some apples and then relaxed at the park. I also met my friend!
(私はお店に行き、リンゴを買ってから公園でくつろぎました。友達にも会いました！)

As I traveled to the local markets on a sunny but breezy day, I decided to purchase local fruits sold by a wonderful merchant. I then explored nature nearby in a quiet park where I encountered an old friend of mine.
(晴れていて微風が心地よい日に地元の市場に足を運び、素敵なお店の人から地元の果物を購入することにしました。その後、近くの静かな公園で自然を散策し、昔の友人にばったり会いました。)

最初の文はとても基本的で事実に基づいており、要点を押さえていますが、2つ目は非常に詳細で多くの誇張が加えられています。
物語を語ることは面白いものであるべきです！

下記の例文では、内容は詳細で芸術的ですが、話し手が赤信号を渡っていたことを省略しています。

He rode his bike and came out of nowhere, hitting me on the side, but I was in the wrong because I was riding on a red light.

What Does Artistic License Mean?

Today’s blog post is all about the phrase “artistic license”, which is a somewhat common phrase in general English that may be a bit confusing at first for secondary language learners. It’s a useful one to know in the case that someone applies it to a sentence in conversation, as it’ll help you get context and understanding overall.

The Meaning

If we are literal, “artistic license” would mean you have some kind of license for art. That said, it has nothing to do with this. The meaning of artistic license is to have the freedom to be creative or add onto or remove parts of a story that you’re telling in order to make it more engaging, interesting or even make it more favorable to you. People would often do this in order to make them look good in an accident, for example, where they omit facts about their mistakes, but add a lot of exaggeration to the story to make the other person look bad. That’s one way you can think of “artistic license”.

Examples and Use Cases

There’ll be two examples here: one showing a story that is factual and true, and then the same story but with “artistic license” applied.

“I went to the shop, bought some apples and then relaxed at the park. I also met my friend!”

vs

“As I traveled to the local markets on a sunny but breezy day, I decided to purchase local fruits sold by a wonderful merchant. I then explored nature nearby in a quiet park where I encountered an old friend of mine.”

Notice that the first sentence is very basic, factual and to the point, but the second is very detailed with a lot of exaggeration applied. Telling a story is meant to be interesting!

“He rode his bike and came out of nowhere, hitting me on the side, but I was in the wrong because I was riding on a red light.”

vs

“Out of the blue, he appeared on his bike, catching me by surprise with an unexpected collision.”

Notice that it’s detailed and artistic, but omits that the speaker crossed a red light.

Finally, using the word in a sentence:

“He took a lot of artistic license with that story.”
“The movie Saving Private Ryan is pretty realistic, but there’s also a lot of artistic license applied.”

Other Ways to Say “Artistic License”

Another way to say “artistic license” is to “be creative.” ie.

“You can be pretty creative with the story, you know.”

“That story got very creative even if it wasn’t realistic.”
“The movie ‘Braveheart’ was fun, but not realistic. They got a bit creative with history.”

Personal Examples and Conclusion

In my daily life, I tend to have a lot of artistic license with what I say in English teaching, because it’s useful for students to hear me speak on a basic level of English, up to advanced, storytelling styles. It’s a useful ability to have because it stretches your creative mind and also shows students how English can function – and how beautiful it could sound.

今日のブログでは、「safe」と「safety」という単語の違いについてお話しします。
これは私の生徒さんたちがよく混同している言葉ですが、簡単に修正できます。
日本はとても安全な国なので、旅行に関するレッスンを行なっている時や、日本について話している時によく耳にします。

 

「safe」と「safety」の違い

【よくある間違い】「safe」と「safety」の使い方

基本的に「safety」は名詞なので、何かを説明するためには使用しません。
「safe」は形容詞なので、場所や状況などを説明するために使用します。

 

「safe」を使った例文

【よくある間違い】「safe」と「safety」の使い方

これはよくある間違いの一つで、私が最もよく耳にするものでもあります。

❌ Japan is a very safety country.

この20年間英語を教えてきた間に、何度もこの間違ったフレーズを耳にしてきました。
おそらく、日本人の多くの方が「safety driver」という言葉を使うからかもしれません。

正しい文章はこのようになります。

Japan is a very safe country.
(日本はとても安全な国です。)

I am a very safe driver.
(私はとても安全なドライバーです。)

My neighbourhood is really safe. We’ve never experienced any kind of crime since we’ve lived there.
(私の住む地域は本当に安全です。私たちがそこに住んで以来、犯罪に遭遇したことはありません。)

 

「safety」を使った例文

ここでは「safety」という言葉を使った例文をご紹介します。

下記の言葉は建設現場や危険が伴う職場などでよく見かける言葉です。

Safety First
(安全第一)

飛行機に搭乗した際によく耳にするアナウンスのなかにも「safety」が使われています。

For the safety of our passengers and crew. All luggage must be stored in the overhead compartment or under your seat during take off and landing.
(乗客および乗務員の安全のため、離陸および着陸中はすべての手荷物を頭上の収納スペースまたは座席の下に収納してください。)

 

類似のよくある間違い「danger」と「dangerous」

頻繁ではありませんが、「danger」と「dangerous」を混同している方もいます。
「safety」と「safe」のように、「danger」は名詞で「dangerous」は形容詞です。

Danger! Do not enter. High Voltage Wires
(危険！入らないでください。高電圧の電線があります。)

Don’t touch that cable. It is old and frayed and looks a bit dangerous. I’ll buy a new one today.
(そのケーブルには触れないでください。古くてほつれていて、少し危なく見えます。今日新しいものを買います。)

 

まとめ

それらの違いは明確で、使い方を覚えておけばそれほど難しくありません。

Common English Errors (Safe vs Safety) 

Hello again everyone. In my blog today I’ll show you the difference between the words safe and safety because it is something that my students seem to confuse very often and is also an easy fix. I often hear it when we do the travel based classes or when we are talking about Japan because as you are all aware, Japan is a very safe country. 

Difference Between Safe and Safety

Basically, safety is a noun so we don’t use it to describe something. Safe is the adjective and is what we use to describe places, situations, and so on. 

Examples

This is an example of one of these mistakes and it is also the one I hear most often.

Japan is a very safety country.

I’ve heard this so many times in my 20 years teaching here and it is incorrect, maybe it’s because a lot of Japanese people use the term “safety driver”

This is the correct version.

Japan is a very safe country.

I am a very safe driver.

My neighbourhood is really safe. We’ve never experienced any kind of crime since we’ve lived there.

Here are some examples of how to use the word “safety” in a sentence.

You will often see this on construction sites or workplaces where there is a risk of danger involved. 

“Safety First” 

You will also hear this announcement after boarding a flight. 

“For the safety of our passengers and crew. All luggage must be stored in the overhead compartment or under your seat during take off and landing. “

Similar Errors

Similarly, but not quite as often I hear people confuse the words danger and dangerous. 

In the same way as safety and safe, danger is the noun and dangerous is the adjective. 

For example

“Danger! Do not enter. High Voltage Wires”

“Don’t touch that cable. It is old and frayed and looks a bit dangerous. I’ll buy a new one today.

Conclusion

So there it is. The difference between safe and safety is pretty obvious and not so difficult to master as long as you remember that safe is an adjective so we can use it to talk describe things like places, people, areas, neighbourhoods, and more, and safety is a noun so it is often used on signs and in announcements like I showed you above. 私が経験した怖いこと

怖い話といえば、私が最初に経験したハロウィンは、私が10歳頃の時に見たハロウィンの映画を通してでした。

当時、私の母国（ウガンダ）ではハロウィンは祝われておらず、その映画は私を恐怖に陥れました！
長い間、それが頭から離れませんでした。
私は、それが長い間私を悩ませ、ハロウィンを嫌いにさせたと思います。

若者たちは面白い衣装を着て、ハロウィンのパーティーやパレードを楽しんでいます。

Hello there, I’m glad you’ve stopped by.
It’s that time of the year when we think of spirits, ghosts and other spooky things that come to “haunt” us.
In the spirit of the season, we’ll be looking at the meaning, origin and usage of the idiom, “Come back to haunt you”.  

Meaning 

The idiom “come back to haunt you” means that an action, a decision or mistake you made in the past, can resurface and cause problems or regrets later on for you, just like a ghost or spirit haunting your memory.
It describes a situation where a mistake or a bad decision in the past has negative consequences in the present or future.

Origin

The origin of this idiom is not tied to a specific historical event or story. Instead, it draws upon the common human experience of regret and the idea that past mistakes or actions can have a lasting impact on one’s life. Like a spooky ghost from the past…

Usage

The idiom is used in various settings like workplace, family, social situations to warn or remind someone that their actions now may have bad consequences in the future.

Examples: 

Be careful what you say about your boss; it might come back to haunt you in the future.
Skipping classes now may seem fun, but it could come back to haunt you when you’re trying to graduate.

To sum up, just like ghosts, goblins, ghosts and other creatures associated with Halloween, come back to “haunt” us every year on October 31st, bad actions, mistakes or decisions made in the past may haunt or cause trouble for us in the present or future.

大人たちもパーティーを開いたり、仮装を楽しんだりします。

今日のテーマはハロウィンそのものについてではなく、「You look like you’ve seen a ghost (幽霊でも見たようだね)」というフレーズです。
これは、ある特定の感情を表現するのにとてもよく使われる役立つフレーズです。

Well, not yet, but as of this writing, it’s October and Halloween is the major event for this month. Halloween is known and celebrated around the world primarily for its horror themes, where kids would dress up as monsters and go around a neighborhood asking for treats (or tricks). Adults would also party and dress up, too.

Today’s topic however is about the phrase “You look like you’ve seen a ghost”, which is a fairly common and useful phrase in English to express certain feelings. Let’s get into it.

What Does it Mean?

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost” basically means that someone looks as if they’ve seen something that has shocked or scared them in some way. It’s rather broad in how it can be used, as not only can it be used as a way to describe how someone seems scared, but also their complexion, such as when someone looks very pale or ill. It’s a way to tell someone that they don’t look well or seem unnerved by something, essentially.

Use Case Examples

Here are a few ways it could be used in common conversations:

“Hi Mike. Ooh, you look like you’ve seen a ghost, are you okay?”

“Hey you don’t look too good today. In fact, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

As I’m sure you are all aware, this month it is Halloween and if you have been in Kensington for a while you know some of our discussion will be Halloween themed and we will be talking about Halloween traditions, what scary movies, books, and experiences you have had, and some of your deepest darkest fears!

Halloween’s Origins

You all know Halloween as it is now with people dressing up and going to Halloween parties and parades, trick or treating and generally having a fun time, but did you know that Halloween is actually around 2000 years and originates in Europe? In those days it was similar in some ways to Obon in that people believed that on that day it was possible to be closer to the dead and communicate with spirits. Of course not all spirits had good intentions so a number of practices were put in place to drive evil ones away. People also used to wear animal heads and skins to these ceremonies too and this may be the origin of the modern day “cosplay” theme of Halloween.

 

Make your Blood Run Cold

There are many ways to say something scares or scared you in English and here is one of my favourites. “make your blood run cold”

“Make your blood run cold” means to feel extreme fear. Here are a couple of examples.

“The shower scene from “Psycho” always makes my blood run cold”.

“ I almost stood on very large snake in Nishi Koen a few years ago. the thought of it still makes my blood run cold” ( true story)

“No matter how long I stay in Japan, even the smallest of earthquakes makes my blood run cold.”

Halloween in Scotland

Halloween in Scotland is slightly different to what you see in American films but the idea is pretty similar. Firstly, Scottish kids will dress up and go out but we don’t use “trick or treat”. In Scotland it is called “guising” and the main difference is that when we visit a home we are invited in and have to perform a “party piece” before we are given any candy.  The party piece can be a joke, riddle, song, poem, or anything at all. On one memorable occasion when I was about twenty years old, a couple of kids came and performed a ballroom dance in my living room!

「本町通」は、過去に西洋の船員、特にアメリカ海軍の将校が休暇中に楽しい時間を過ごした横浜市の主要な通りです。

一方で、これは19世紀のアメリカのスラングから来たのかもしれないと言う人もいます。

Hunky-dory? What’s that?
It’s an old American slang or informal expression whose meaning and usage I’m explaining in the next few paragraphs.

 Meaning and origin of “everything is hunky-dory” 

Everything is hunky-dory is an informal expression which means that  things are going very well or are perfectly fine. It’s a way of expressing satisfaction with how things are going.
Some people think that “hunky-dory” probably means  “Honcho dori” is a Main street in Yokohama city, Japan where western sailors,especially the American navy officers,  used to have a good time during their time off in the past.
While others say that it may have originated from American slang in the 19th century. “Hunky” was used to mean “pleasant” or “fine,” and “dory” referred to a type of small fishing boat. Over time, these two words may have been combined to create “hunky-dory.”

Usage Examples:

 Despite some difficulties at the beginning of the trip, the vacation turned out to be hunky-dory, and we had a fantastic time in Malta.

I was worried about the interview, but it went hunky-dory, and I got the job.

In a dialogue:

Yumi: Hey Kimberly, how was the camping trip last weekend?

Today’s blog post will specifically be talking about the term that is sometimes heard in the English language, “It feels like home”. It’s not as commonplace as it used to be as English is a constantly evolving language with new idioms produced year by year, however it may still be heard within certain cultures and is a useful one to know, as it specifically refers to the concept of nostalgia in a casual conversation.

What Does It Mean?

“It feels like home” is a term to describe a nostalgic sensation from an experience that you or someone is having. An example of this would be living in another country, and one day you go to an authentic Japanese restaurant which welcomes you in a typical Japanese service fashion, has similar smells, sounds and the staff all speak Japanese. In this case, you’d be reminded of your home country and thus it would “feel like home”. It can also be used within smaller contexts and with minor shifts in the sentence, such as “it tastes just like home” when you try something that brings about nostalgia for your home country or maybe even cooking from your childhood.

Use Case Examples

Some examples of how to use the phrase are below:

“Oh wow, this restaurant feels like home. It’s so similar!”

“I went to my friend’s house and they cooked some Japanese dishes. It felt just like home”

“I set up my room here so it feels just like home back in Japan.”

Similar Phrases and Words

Some phrases and words that are similar to “It feels like home” include:

  • Nostalgia i.e “I’m very nostalgic when I go there.”
  • “reminds me of home” i.e. “This place reminds me of my home”

Times When I Felt Nostalgic

A specific time I felt rather nostalgic and felt like I was at home was when I went to a Turkish restaurant in Japan. While I am not Turkish, the food is extremely similar to the food I ate when I was a child, which was of a Serbian variety. The tastes, atmosphere and music all made it feel like home. It was very nostalgic. The Turkish Coffee in particular was wonderful, and put a “spring in my step.”

今日は少しイギリスのスラングをご紹介します。
海外で旅行や生活をしていると、学校や教科書で学んだ英語とは少し異なる英語を耳にすることがよくあります。
その違いの一つが、スラングの頻繁な使用です。

このブログでは、私がよく使う2つの言葉、「boozer (飲む場所やかなりの量を飲む人)」と「skint (お金がない)」についてご説明します。

 

「boozer」の意味

「boozer」の意味は簡単です。
「booze」はアルコール飲料を意味し、「boozer」はパブやバー、もしくは、かなり飲む人を指します。

 

「skint」の意味

「skint」は少し理解が難しいかもしれません。
20世紀の言葉「Skinned」から来ているようで、肉を剥がすことではなく、むしろ、お金や財産を取り上げられた人を表す言葉として使われていました。
時間とともに発音が「skint」に変わり、現在は一時的にあるいは近い将来にお金が少ない、または全くないという意味で使われます。

 

「boozer」と「skint」を使った例文

[例文]

You going down the boozer tonight mate?
(今夜パブに行かない？)

Can’t go I’m afraid. I’m skint.
(ごめん行けない。お金がないんだ。)

 

I’m not sure if we should hire that guy. He’s a great chef but his reputation as gambler, boozer, and a womanizer are giving me second thoughts!
(その男性を雇うべきかどうかわかりません。彼は素晴らしいシェフですが、ギャンブラー、酒好き、そして女たらしとしての評判が私に二の足を踏ませています！)

お金がないと言う方法はもちろん他にもたくさんあります。

Broke (お金がない), penniless (無一文), strapped for cash (お金に困って、懐が寂しい), badly off (貧しい、不景気な)

それとは違って、不思議なことに、イギリス人はパブでの時間を多く過ごしているにも関わらず、パブを表すスラングはそれほど多くありません。
思いつくのは「local」くらい。
私たちは「local」を普段よく行くバーについて話す時に使います。
したがって、「the local」は普段行くバーを指し、「a local」はその特定のバーによく行く客を意味します。

[例文]

I had a pretty quiet Saturday night. Had a few pints at the local but didn’t stay long. I’m kind of strapped for cash at the moment.
(土曜日の夜はかなり静かに過ごしました。地元のパブでビールを数杯飲んだけど、長居はしなかった。今、お金がちょっときついんだ。)

British Slang. How to use the Terms “Skint” and Boozer”

Hello there everyone, today I’ll introduce a little bit of British slang. When you are travelling or living overseas, you will probably notice that the English you hear is somewhat different from what you have learned in school or from textbooks and one of the main differences is the very frequent use of slang words. Here are two words that I use quite often ,“skint” ,meaning having no money and boozer, which just means a place to drink or someone who drinks a fair bit. 

Boozer

The term boozer is pretty easy. Booze means alcoholic drink, and boozer can be either a pub or bar or a person who drinks a fair amount. 

Skint

Skint is a little more difficult to understand. It seems to come from a twentieth century word “Skinned” which has no relation to having your flesh removed but rather was used to describe a person who had been stripped of their money or belongings and over time the pronunciation has changed to skint and it simply means to have no or very little money either temporarily or for the foreseeable future. 

Examples

“You going down the boozer tonight mate?”
“Can’t go I’m afraid. I’m skint.”

Alternative Phrases

There are of course many ways to say you don’t have money and here are a few. 

broke, penniless, strapped for cash, badly off, 

Strangely, even though the Brits do spend a lot of time in the pub we don’t have so many slang words to describe it. The only one that springs to mind is “local”. We use this to talk about the bar we usually frequent so “the local” means the bar you usually go to and “a local” means a customer who often goes to a particular bar. 

Example. 

“I had a pretty quiet Saturday night. Had a few pints at the local but didn’t stay long. I’m kind of strapped for cash at the moment. “

So there you have it. You can now confidently travel to the UK and have, or not have a drink with your new found friends depending on your level of solvency at the time and all done in very natural British English slang.

「travel light」の直接的な反対の表現は実際には存在しませんが、「pack heavy (重い荷物を詰める)」、「overpack (過剰に荷造りする)」、「pack too much (荷物を多く詰めすぎる)」や「come prepared (しっかりと準備して行く)」などと言うことができます。

私の妻は過剰に荷造りする癖がありますが、私はバックパッカーのように軽く荷造りして旅行するのが好きです。

さらに、飛行機は軽いよりも思い方が多くの燃料を消費します。
もし、多くの旅行者が軽く荷造りして旅行するなら、飛行機は燃料の消費を減らし、CO2排出を削減できるでしょう。

Travel Light

Are you a frequent traveler or an occasional one like me?
Whichever you are, do you often “travel light” or carry a lot of luggage on your trips?
In the following few paragraphs I explain the meaning and usage of this travel related expression.

Meaning 

To travel light means to pack only a small amount of things when going on a trip, without bringing a lot of heavy or unnecessary items. It’s about not carrying too much luggage so that you can move around easily and comfortably.

Usage examples

My sister prefers to travel light, especially on business trips because it makes getting around airports and public transportation much easier.

Before the hiking trip, I always make sure to travel light by packing only the essentials like water, snacks, and a first aid kit.

In a dialogue:
Yumi:  Have you started packing  for the camping trip yet, Rita?

Rita: Yeah, I started gathering my stuff, but I’m trying to travel light this time.

Yumi: That’s a good idea, because we’re going to carry everything on our backs during the hike to the campsite.

Rita: Exactly. I’m just bringing the basics like a sleeping bag, some food, and a small tent.

Opposite of “travel light”?

There is no real straight forward opposite expression for “travel light”, but we can say something like pack heavy, overpack, pack too much or come prepared…

How do I prefer to travel?

Like a backpacker, I prefer to travel light unlike my wife who has a habit of overpacking. I think we can now buy some of the stuff we need like toiletries,  at the destination. So we don’t need to pack them.  Plus, a heavy  airplane uses more fuel than a lighter one. If more travelers traveled light, planes would burn less fuel and cut Co2 emissions.

All in all, traveling light is not only a comfortable and quick way to travel, but  it’s also environmentally friendly.
