Getting ready for boarding school

Hello there, are you having a good weekend? It’s time to tell you a little about myself/country or culture. Sticking to this week’s theme, Getting Ready, let me tell you a little about getting ready for boarding. In my home country (Uganda) many children go to boarding schools. I went to boarding school, too.  In a boarding school, students stay at school (they sleep in a dormitory ) they only go home when school is closed for the holidays. About 2 weeks before going back to school, students write “a back to school list”(  A list of things they need for the new school term) and give it to their parents. I used to pack my suitcase 4 or 5 days before “back to school” day. In addition to stationery, books and clothes, I packed lots of snacks and juice concentrates.

今日は私自身や私の国・文化について少しお話しします。

今週のテーマ「Getting Ready（準備）」に関連して、寄宿の準備について少しお話ししましょう。
私の母国（ウガンダ）では、多くの子供たちが寄宿学校に通います。私も寄宿学校に通いました。
寄宿学校では、生徒は学校に滞在し（寄宿舎で寝ます）、ホリデイで学校が休校のときだけ家に帰ります。
学校に戻る約2週間前に、生徒は「新学期リスト」（新学期に必要なもののリスト）を作成し、それを保護者に渡します。
私は学校に戻る日の4〜5日前にスーツケースを詰めていました。
文房具、本、洋服に加えて、おやつや濃縮ジュースをたくさん詰めました。

【デニー先生】ゴールデンウィークに愛媛に行きました

Ehime Birthday Trip

During my Golden Week break, I went to Ehime for 3 days as a birthday trip, and it was great.

My intention was to visit two castles – Ozu and Matsuyama. Both were incredible to see for me, and I was delighted to see so many historical artifacts like armour worn by lords of the time, weaponry such as spears, swords, daggers and so on, and architectural designs and locations. I also went to Garyu Sanso, an ancient cottage in the deep country side of Ehime. It was beautiful and I highly recommend it.

I was also lucky enough to see an exhibition at the art museum, showing off masterwork katana from all across Japan. I couldn’t take photos, but it was amazing seeing how well crafted the swords and parts were.

The trip overall was wonderful – Ehime’s food was fantastic and if you really enjoy history, particularly regarding Samurai, architecture and weaponry, Ehime is a fantastic choice.

愛媛へのバースデー旅行

ゴールデンウィークにバースデー旅行として愛媛に3日間行ったのですが、素晴らしかったです。

旅の目的は小津城と松山城の二つの城を訪ねることでした。
どちらも私にとっては素晴らしく、当時の領主が身につけていた鎧、槍、剣、短剣などの武器、建築のデザインや場所など、多くの歴史的遺物を見ることができて嬉しく思いました。
臥龍山荘と呼ばれる古い山荘にも行きましたが、とても綺麗でみなさんも行ってみることを強くおすすめします。

また、幸運にも美術館の展示会で全国の傑作な刀が披露されていました。
写真は撮れませんでしたが、刀やパーツの作り方が素晴らしかったです。

この旅行は全体的に素晴らしいものとなりました。愛媛の食べ物も素晴らしいものでした。
もし、武士、建築、武器などの歴史に興味があるなら、愛媛は素晴らしい選択です。

【ティム先生】科学への興味

Science

I like reading, I try to read at least a couple of books per month and I like reading a variety of genres. Biographies, History, Business, Self Improvement, Novels, Philosophy and most recently I love reading about science, especially astronomy and physics. 

I used to hate physics at school, didn’t understand a word of it, I think I failed both my physics class and also my astronomy class in high school and I’d imagine that my teacher would be very surprised and happy by my reading list nowadays.

My interest in physics started while reading Einstein’s biography by Walter Isaacson. He is one of my favourite non-fiction writers and I’ve read many of his books. He specializes in biographies of historical icons such as Steve Jobs, Leonardo Da Vinci, Einstein etc… While reading Einstein’s biography, I got interested in his theory about the Relativity of Time and I desperately tried to understand what it meant. 

I think I kind of do now. Did you know that time is different in every single spot of the universe and that it’s affected by the mass of objects and their gravitational field that warps space and time around them? That’s some crazy stuff!! Our universe and the scientific facts about it are so crazy that they are almost unbelievable. 

Anyway, I’m in the beginning of my journey when it comes to science and time is sparse these days cause of my work but I’m curious and super excited about learning more!

科学

私は読書が好きで、少なくとも月に数冊の本を読むようにしています。
さまざまなジャンルの本を読むのが好きで、伝記、歴史、ビジネス、自己啓発、小説、哲学、そして最近では科学、特に天文学と物理学について読むのが大好きです。

学校では物理が嫌いで、出てくる単語はひとつも分からず、高校では物理のクラスも天文学のクラスも単位を落としたかと思います。
きっと当時の先生が、今の私の読書リストを見たら、とても驚き嬉しく思ってくれるでしょう。

物理学への興味は、ウォルター・アイザックソンによるアインシュタインの伝記を読んだときから始まりました。
彼は私の好きなノンフィクション作家の一人で、私は彼の本をたくさん読みました。
彼はスティーブ・ジョブズ、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ、アインシュタインなど、歴史的アイコンの伝記を専門としています。
アインシュタインの伝記を読んでいる間、私は彼の相対性理論に興味を持ち、それが何を意味するのかを必死に理解しようとしました。

今はなんとなく理解できたかと思います。
時間というものは宇宙のすべての場所で異なり、物体の質量とそれらの周りの空間と時間を歪める重力場の影響を受けることをご存知ですか？わけが分からないですね！
私たちの宇宙とそれに関する科学的事実は非常にクレイジーで、ほとんど信じられないほどです。

とにかく、私は科学に関しては旅の始まりにあります。
最近は仕事で時間があまりないのですが、さらに学びを進めていきたいと思っています。

Hello there everyone, 

Hope you all had a good Golden Week! This year I made a spur of the moment decision to visit Miyazaki with no real plan in mind rather to escape Fukuoka so my kids don’t just game with their friends all day. 

Not really knowing much about Miyazaki, I was unaware of the fact it had an airport and spent a good 3 hours getting there by train and bus but it was worth it. 

We went to some of the usual sightseeing spots, Aoshima and the like but since we were with the kids it was more of a zoo and amusement parks in the daytime and good food and beer hunting at night kind of holiday. The food was great, a lot of charcoal chicken and surprisingly good gyoza everywhere.

I was pretty surprised by the tropical nature of the place, it was really warm and pleasant the whole time and they have some pretty sweet nature down there that we don’t see so much in Fukuoka City. It also has a really chilled atmosphere too, the people seemed really laid back and friendly and certainly service in bars,restaurants, shops, and even on public transport was really chatty and much more personable than the very polite and formal service you often find in bigger Japanese cities. 

Next time I’d like to explore the countryside a bit more because some places look amazing. Maybe when the kids have grown up a bit.

みなさん、こんにちは。

良いゴールデンウィークを過ごせましたか？
私は、今年は詳しい計画を立てずに宮崎を訪れることにしました。
というよりもむしろ、子供たちが友達と一日中ゲームをするだけにならないように、福岡から出ることが目的でした。

宮崎のことはあまり知らなかったので、空港があることを知らず、電車やバスを使って3時間ほどかかりました。ですが、それだけの価値はあったと思います。

青島などの、よく観光客が訪れるスポットに行ってきました。
子供たちと一緒だったので昼間はほとんど動物園や遊園地などの施設、夜は休日らしく美味しい食べ物やビール探し。
食べ物は素晴らしく、たくさんの鶏炭火焼と驚くほどおいしい餃子がいたるところにあります。

また、熱帯な自然にも驚きました。
ずっと暖かくて気持ちがよく、福岡市ではあまり見かけないような自然がありました。
そこには落ち着いた雰囲気があり、人々は本当にリラックスしていてフレンドリーです。
日本の大都市でしばしば見かける非常に丁寧でフォーマルなサービスよりも、宮崎のバーやレストランでのサービスは (公共交通機関でさえ) もっと話好きで人柄の良い感じがしました。

今度は、もう少し田舎の方も探検してみたいと思っています。
たぶん子供たちがもう少し成長してから。

It’s a good idea to greet people especially in small towns

Greetings everyone, hope you’re chilling out after a busy week. Sticking to the topic, “Giving and asking for directions”, in my home country we’re taught from a young age to always  greet people, even strangers. Say hello to people you pass, especially in a small town. In case you lose your way and have to turn around, they’ll be more willing to point you in the right direction if you’d greeted them when you passed them earlier.
So, it’s a good idea to say a word of greeting. It’s good manners, too.

レッスンテーマ「Give Directions」に関連して、私の母国では、幼い頃から、見知らぬ人でさえも常に人々に挨拶するように教えられています。
特に小さな町では、通りすがりの人に挨拶をします。
あなたがもし道に迷って、引き返さなければならなくなった時、あなたから先にそこにいる人たちに挨拶していたならば、彼らは喜んであなたに正しい道を教えてくれるでしょう。

ですから、挨拶をするのは良い考えです。良いマナーでもあります。

Matsuyama Golden Week

As some of my regular students already know after asking, I’m preparing to go to Matsuyama for a few days during Golden Week.

I’ve heard a lot about Matsuyama from various people – it has a nice castle, a very famous and old hot spring, and some very nice nature spots. There’s a really big mountain over there too which I’m thinking of hiking up. If anyone else has recommendations, let me know. It looks like a nice place!

Checking your Student Files

Hello everyone,
In Kensington we have a sheet with all the private lessons taking place every day. We call this the “Muchachos” sheet, and I have no idea why we called it this way (Muchachos means friends in Spanish) but we did and it has stuck for a few years now. 

As all our private students know, you all have your individual personalized student file with all your lessons and all the comments from the teacher on how you did in class. One thing you may not know is that Jaimie and I, check each and every file after each and every class.

We do that to see how each student did each class, to choose their next class and to make sure their lessons are always customized to their needs. 

That’s really great service people! All the other schools I worked for, had no way of tracking student progress and to be perfectly honest most of them didn’t care. They cared only about making cash and I can’t name names but many (most?) of the big Eikaiwas are just like that. 

Are we perfect? No of course not, there are so many things that we want to improve and will continue doing so, but we genuinely care about and work hard for the quality of our lessons and that distinguishes us from all the other run-of-the-mill Eikaiwas out there! Any time you have any feedback on how we can improve our services please feel free to let us know!

みなさん、こんにちは。

ケンジントン英会話では、「ムチャチョス」シートと呼ばれるファイルを毎日チェックしています。
なぜ「ムチャチョス」（ムチャチョスはスペイン語で友達を意味します）という名前にしたのかわかりませんが、私たちはその名前に決め、数年間そのシートを運用しています。

プライベートレッスンでは、生徒さんはレッスンファイルという、生徒さんそれぞれ個別のファイルを持っています。
そのレッスンファイルの中には、受講したレッスンや講師からのコメントを確認することができます。
あなたが知らないかもしれないことは、ジェイミーと私が、すべてのレッスンの後にすべてのファイルをチェックしているということです。

生徒さんが各レッスンをどのように行ったかを確認し、次のレッスンを準備し、レッスンが常に生徒さんのニーズに合わせてカスタマイズされているかのチェックをしています。

素晴らしいサービスマン！
私が以前働いていた全ての学校には、生徒さんの進捗を確認する方法がなく、正直に言うと、ほとんどの学校ではそこを気にしていませんでした。
彼らはお金を稼ぐことだけを気にしていて、どことは言えませんが、大手の英会話スクールの多く（ほとんど？）はそのようなものです。

私たちはもちろん完璧ではありません。
改善したいことはたくさんあり、これからも改善し続けていきますが、常に念頭に置いていることは、レッスンの質に真剣に気を配り一生懸命取り組むということです。
これは他のありふれた英会話スクールとは違う、ケンジントン英会話の特徴です。

【ジェイミー先生】ヒップホップ好きであることは秘密にしてました

A secret hip hop fan

I know when you look at me you probably imagine a man who loves the higher arts, opera, ballet, and classical music, but deep down, I’m a serious hip hop fiend. My interest in hip hop first probably started when I was still in primary school, I remember liking some kind of more pop based hip hop back then, but I think it really kicked in when I first heard an album called “The Chronic” in 1992 when I was 14. One listen to the deep base of the intro tune and I was totally hooked forever. I still play it  before I go out or when I’m running because it not only  gives me a boost but also goosebumps, more from the memories rather than the music since I’ve heard it a million times now.

Unfortunately for me, hip hop was nowhere near popular in the northwest of Scotland in the late eighties and nineties, and I had to keep my deep obsession with all things hip hop a close secret, shared mostly with my brother and one other good friend, because in those days in the UK it was all about dance music and I was definitely in a very small circle of fringe music lovers. My devotion to  hip hop was most definitely not shared by my parents, ex girlfriend, most of my friends, and nowadays my wife either, but it doesn’t matter because me and my music have stuck together. 

Nowadays, the genre has become really popular and though I like some new stuff, I’ve found that my music tastes have stuck in a single period, late eighties through to early two thousands and no matter what new music I try, I always go back to my vintage, former underground music. Earlier this year the same man who made the album that really got me hooked on hip hop performed at the Super Bowl, which is one of the most watched events in the world. 

Hip hop has come a long way and I’m glad I stayed on the train.

秘密のヒップホップファン

みなさんは私を見ると、アート、オペラ、バレエ、クラシック音楽を愛する男性を想像するかもしれませんが、実は私はヒップホップ狂です。
ヒップホップに興味を持ったのは小学生の頃だったと思います。
当時はもっとポップなヒップホップが好きでしたが、1992年、私が14歳の時に「The Chronic」というアルバムを初めて聴いたときから、ヒップホップに深くのめり込んで行ったと記憶しています。
イントロの重低音を聴いて、永遠に夢中になりました。
今でも外出する前やランニングする時に聞いていますが、気分が上がるだけでなく鳥肌もたつほどです。
何百万回も聞いているので、その気分の高揚は音楽からというよりも思い出から来るものでしょう。

私にとって残念なことに、80年代後半から90年代にかけて、スコットランドの北西部ではヒップホップは全く人気がありませんでした。
ヒップホップに対する深い熱意を秘密にしなければならなかったので、ヒップホップについては主に兄と親友とだけ共有していました。
なぜなら、当時のイギリスではダンスミュージックがすべてであり、私は明らかに音楽好きの中でも端っこの小さな世界の中にいました。
私のヒップホップへの愛情は、両親、元ガールフレンド、ほとんどの友人、そして最近では妻にも共有されていませんでしたが、それは問題ではありません。私と音楽は結束しているからです。

今では、このジャンルはとても人気があります。
私は新しいものも好きですが、好みとしては、80年代後半から2000年代前半までの期間が特に好きであることがわかりました。
どんなに新しい曲を試しても、私はいつも、古いかつてのアンダーグラウンドミュージックに戻っていきます。
今年の初め、私をヒップホップに夢中にさせたアルバムを作った男性が、世界で最も注目されているイベントの一つであるスーパーボウルで演奏しました。

ヒップホップは長い道のりを歩んできました。
私はその旅路を共に歩めたことを嬉しく思います。

【ヘンリー先生】熱帯の国ウガンダの季節について

seasons

I was born in a tropical country (Uganda -East Africa). We don’t have 4 seasons like you have in Japan and other parts of the world. We have alternating dry and wet seasons. Two wet (rainy) months are followed by 2 months of dry weather.  It’s usually sunny even in the wet season. It’s common to have 2 hours of heavy rain followed by bright sunshine. I think that’s why my country is always green. I enjoy the 4 springs in Japan, though! I especially love spring.

私は熱帯の国（ウガンダ – 東アフリカ）で生まれました。
ウガンダは、日本や他の国のように四季はなく、乾季と雨季が交互にあります。
２ヶ月の雨の後に２ヶ月の日照りが続きます。
通常、雨季でも晴れていて、２時間の大雨が続いた後に明るい日差しが降り注ぐのはよくあることです。
私の国がいつも緑なのはそういう理由からでしょう。
しかし、日本では４つの季節を楽しんでいます！
私は特に春が大好きです。

【デニー先生】尺八の練習をはじめました

Shakuhachi

As some of my students already know, I’ve recently started to practice the Shakuhachi. I bought one off Amazon for about 9000 yen which is pretty cheap, and I’ve had it for about a month now.

It’s really difficult, but it’s an interesting device that helps me think about my breathing and keep in focus. I’m a huge fan of flutes and those kinds of tones in music and often listen to very beautiful orchestral music – usually from Gaelic culture.

But I’m a big fan of the Shakuhachi sound, too. I can make sounds with it now, but I’m still very much a beginner and will continue to practice. If you are into flutes and such too, let me know!

生徒さんの中にはすでに知っている方もいますが、私は最近、尺八の練習をはじめました。
値段は結構安く、アマゾンで9000円くらいでした。
購入してから１ヶ月くらい経ちます。

尺八を吹くのはとても難しいですが、呼吸について考え、集中力を保つのに役立つ、興味深い楽器です。
私はフルートやそのような楽器の音色が大好きで、とても美しいオーケストラ音楽(通常はゲールの文化から生まれた)をよく聴いています。

尺八の音色も大好きです。
音を出すことはできますが、まだまだ初心者なので練習を続けていきます。
