日常英会語レッスン – イギリスのスラング – Knackered

Today I’d like to introduce another very useful British slang word, “Knackered” which quite simply means “tired”. Do you sometimes feel knackered after a long day at work? I sometimes do especially if my first class is at 8:30 in the morning and my last class at 8:30 at night. Well you can enjoy your work and feel knackered at the same time!!

Knackered
‘Knackered’ – a great word and phrase used to describe your tiredness and exhaustion.

「壊れた」
Knackered – 疲れを表すのに使われる素晴らしい言葉です。
例) 今日は、すっげーくたくただ。

今週末のレッスン内容 in 赤坂 – ソーシャル英語について

Hello everyone,
This week’s subject at our Akasaka and Yakuin schools we’ll be about Social English.

In our level 1 classes we’ll:
practice how to make offers.
Would you like some tea? 紅茶はいかがですか?

how to make requests
Can I have some coffee, please? コーヒーをもらえますか?

how to invite
Would you like to have dinner together tonight? 今夜ご一緒に夕食をいかがですか?

how to say yes
That sounds good. それはいいですね。

and how to say no politely
I’m really sorry but I can’t make it tonight. 本当に申し訳ないのですが、今夜は都合がつきません。

how to apologize
I’m really sorry for being late. 遅くなって本当にすみません。

and finally how to respond to bad news.
I’m really sorry to hear that. それは大変お気の毒です。

In our level 2 and 3 classes in addition to the above we’ll cover some more social situations and focus more on saying no politely. Also we’ll introduce some very useful idioms such as:
break the ice 場を和やかにする
a real eye opener 目を開かされるような出来事
feel like a fish out of water 場違いな感じがする
get into hot water 厄介なことになる

Finally in our level 3 classes we’ll also talk business etiquette in Japan and how it differs to other countries.

ビジネス英会話でよく使う表現 – in the black

Hello everyone, today we will introduce the phrase “in the black”. This means basically to not be losing money. The day after Thanksgiving Day in the US is called Black Friday, it’s one of the busiest shopping days of the year and it’s called Black Friday because it’s the start of the most profitable season for shop owners.

It’s quite interesting that there is a very similar expression in Japanese too, so it’s easy to remember.

in the black

黒字で

  • to be making money, not owing any money; solvent.

  • もうかっていて、借金が無くて;商売が立ち行っていて

“The new CEO moved the company in the black.”

“新任の最高経営責任者は、会社を黒字に持っていった。”
