This means to be able to enter an organisation, field of work or study, or a type of business or company. It usually means that when you do finally enter said field or company, your chance of success will be great.
For example.
I took me a long time to get an interview at the company, but I finally got my foot in the door.
There are many aspiring actors living in Hollywood, but most never get their foot in the door at any major studios.
I wanted to become a journalist but I’ve heard it’s really hard to get your foot in the door.
