Business English – The elephant in the room.

“The elephant in the room.”

This week we are talking about home and neighbourhood, so here is a common expression that is often used in (and out of) business. But be careful, we are not really talking about a room!! We use it to talk about a really obvious problem that exists, but nobody is talking about. Can you imagine there was a big, grey elephant in your living room as you sit and watch TV, but nobody in your family is talking about it?! It’s a really big problem but maybe no one wants to deal with it. So of course, when we use this expression there is no “elephant” and no “room” – it’s just a way of saying there is a “big problem” that everyone is ignoring!

Here’s an example:

“The fact that his 35-year old brother was still living with his parents was a big elephant in the room at every family reunion.” 

Here, this is a big problem and a little strange, but nobody wants to talk about it during the reunion. In this case, maybe it’s a little embarrassing for the brother, so everyone is being polite and just talking about other topics. It’s quite a common phrase, and a good one to know, for everyday use and in the business world too.

“The elephant in the room.”＝「部屋に象」

今週は我が家とご近所について話しているので、一般的な表現でビジネスで（以外でも）よく使われているものを紹介します。でも、気を付けてください。本当に部屋について話しているわけではないんです！

この表現は、とても明確に存在する問題なのに誰もそれについて話さないこと、についてあらわす時に使います。想像してみてください。あなたが座ってテレビを見ている家のリビングに大きな灰色の象がいて、なのに家族の誰もそのことについて話さないなんてことを！？？すごく大きな問題ではあれるけれど、きっとだれも対応したくないのですね。

ということで、もちろん、私たちがこの表現を使う時には、「象」も「部屋」も本当にはありません。「大きな問題」があるのに、誰もが知らないふりをしている状態について言う一つの方法というだけです。

ひとつ例があります：

「彼の35歳の兄弟がまだ両親と一緒に住んでいるということは、毎回の親類の集まりでもだれも触れない問題だった。」

大きな問題で少し奇妙ではあるが、集まりでは誰もそのことに触れたがらない、ということです。この場合、それが兄弟にとってちょっと恥ずかしいことなので、皆が気をつかって他のことについて話している、という感じです。これは本当によく使われる表現なので、日常生活の中でも、ビジネスシーンでも使える、知っておくにはよい表現です。

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons – Personalization

One area we really want to help our students with this week is “Personalization”. We want to help you to talk about your home, your neighbourhood, and your city. Before you come to class, why not prepare an introduction for your teacher? Try to give specific examples to describe where you live, and what you like and don’t like about your local area and Fukuoka. Do you recommend your neighbourhood? Why? Why not?! Also, be sure to mention what activities you usually do there day-to-day. And don’t worry if you’re not sure of the vocabulary or grammar – go ahead and make as many mistakes as you want! Your friendly Kensington teacher will give you excellent feedback and show you how you can talk naturally about your daily life in Fukuoka.

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country – the Edinburgh Festival

Usually at this time of year in Scotland, the Edinburgh Festival is coming to a close. It’s the world’s biggest arts festival which lasts about 3 weeks each summer. Unfortunately, it was canceled this year. However, you can usually watch comedy shows, stage performances, or see live music with lots of singing and dancing. There are also many street performers in the town centre. They are often juggling, doing magic or some dangerous stunts. It’s really lively and there is a great atmosphere in the city. 

Scottish summer isn’t too hot so you can walk comfortably in the streets. Also, Scotland is quite far north, so the summer evenings are really long. It usually doesn’t get dark until 10 or 11pm! You can see many people on the streets and everyone is having a good time. And of course, this time of the day is a great chance to speak to strangers and practice your English! So don’t be shy, the friendly locals and tourists would love to talk to you too!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介: エディンバラフェスティバルについて（ロス講師）

通常であればスコットランドでは今は、エディンバラフェスティバルが近づいている頃です。
世界で１番大きな芸術のお祭りで、毎年夏に３週間開催されます。
残念ながら今年は中止となってしまいました。しかし、いつもであればコメディーショーや、舞台でのパフォーマンス、歌や踊り満載の音楽ライブをみることができます。
街の中心部ではたくさんの路上パフォーマンスもあります。大道芸や、手品、または危険なスタントも！活気にあふれた、素晴らしい雰囲気が街に漂うのです。

スコットランドの夏はそこまで暑くないので、道を歩くのも心地よいです。また、スコットランドはだいぶ北にあるので、夏の夕方がとても長いのです。大抵、午後10時か11時まで暗くならないんですよ！道にはたくさんの人がいて、みんな良い時間を過ごしています。そしてもちろん、１日のなかでもこの時間は、あなたが知らない人に話しかけて、英語を練習するのに最適です！だから恥ずかしがらないでください、親しみやすい地元民や、旅行客があなたと話したがっていますよ！

This week’s subject – Fukuoka city

This week we’re going to be talking about Fukuoka City in class. This class is a great chance to show off your local knowledge and tell your teacher about your favourite sightseeing spots you know in the city. We’re going to practice talking about different activities there are to do in Fukuoka too. Have you ever met a foreigner in Fukuoka and not been able to give recommendations? Well, in this class we’re going to practice exactly that: making suggestions to first time visitors and helping them to enjoy their time in this amazing city!

What we are doing in Kensington – Home and Neighbourhood 

These days I’ve been talking a lot about Home and Neighbourhood with many of my students. I used to live in Minami Ward in the south of the city, but last year I moved to Hirao, where I’m still living now. It’s a very convenient neighbourhood with lots of nice little restaurants, bakeries and cafes. It also has great transport links, with Hirao Station and plenty of bus routes. It’s really near Yakuin, Daimyo and Akasaka – so it’s easy to get to the city centre. If you’re thinking of moving apartment this year or next, I totally recommend Hirao – and if you see me in the street, remember to say “Hello!”

ケンジントンでのできごと -　住んでいる地域について英語で話そう

最近はよく、Home(我が家）とNeighbourhood(ご近所、地域）について多くの生徒さんと話しています。私は以前、市の南に位置する南区に住んでいましたが、去年平尾に引っ越し、今もそこに住んでいます。とても便利な地域で、小さくて素敵なレストラン、パン屋やカフェがたくさんあります。平尾駅のほかにバス路線も多くあるので、交通の便もよいです。薬院や大名、赤坂にも大変近いので、街の中心部に行くのも簡単です。もしもあなたが今年か来年に引っ越しを考えているのであれば、平尾を100％おすすめします。（私に道であったら、’Hello!’と挨拶してくださいね！）
