African drum

Hi there, how’s your weekend shaping up? Have you done or planning anything crazy or fun this weekend?

Well, I’m going to play African drums with my 2 buddies (Charles and Livingstone) at an international event in Onojo city.

Speaking of drums, my country Uganda has over 50 tribes and each of those tribes plays a unique rhythm/beat of drums.  The shapes of drums are also various. When we listen to a drum beat or rhythm, we can easily identify the tribe or the general region of the country it comes from. We also wear various tribal outfits on special occasions.

My tribe’s traditional women’s outfit kind of looks like the Japanese kimono. (Ask me to show you a picture, if you want.)

やあ皆さん、週末をいかがお過ごしですか？週末は何かとても楽しい事をしましたか？それともこの後に予定していますか？

私は、2人の仲間（チャールズとリビングストン）と一緒に、大野城市の国際イベントでアフリカンドラムの演奏をする予定です。

その太鼓についてお話ししましょう。私の国ウガンダは50の部族があり、それぞれが独自のリズムやビートで太鼓を演奏します。太鼓の形もまた様々です。私たちは太鼓のリズムやビートを聴けば、それがどこからやって来たのか、部族や大体の地域を簡単に聞き分けることができます。私たちは特別な場面では、様々な民族衣装を着たりもします。

私の部族の伝統的な女性の衣装は日本の着物に少し見た目が似ているんですよ。（もし良ければ写真を見せてと声を掛けて下さいね。）

dressed to kill / Vertically challenged

(TGIF- Thank God It’s Friday!)
Hello there, how was your week at the workplace? Are you looking forward to the weekend?

In our everyday English blog today, let’s look at 2 fashion/beauty/appearance related idioms:

• dressed to kill … When someone is dressed to kill, they’re wearing fashionable, glamorous clothes intended to attract attention.

A: Moriko came to the party last night dressed to kill, wasn’t she?

B: Yeah. Everyone  noticed her gorgeous outfit.

• Vertically challenged …This is humoristic way to refer to someone who’s short.

A: I can’t reach that shampoo bottle on the top shelve. Can you  give me a hand, Morinosuke.

B: I can see you’re a little vertically challenged, aren’t you?

Note: Please don’t use it to refer to someone who is very short due to some medical condition. It may be offensive.

 TGIF- Thank God It’s Friday!　(今週もお疲れ様！)
みなさんこんにちは、今週はお仕事どうでしたか？週末が待ち遠しいですか？

今日の日常英会話ブログでは、ファッション/美容/外見に関する2つのイディオムをご紹介します。

• kill …誰かの気を引いたり、魅了する為におしdressed to ゃれで豪華な服で着飾ること。

A: Moriko came to the party last night dressed to kill, wasn’t she?

    (昨晩のパーティーにモリ子はすごく着飾って来たでしょ？)

B: Yeah. Everyone  noticed her gorgeous outfit.
    (うん、みんな彼女のゴージャスな服装に注目していたよ）kill …誰かの気を引いたり、魅了する為におしdressed to ゃれで豪華な服で着飾ること。

• Vertically challenged …背が低い人のことを表すユーモラな表現。

A: I can’t reach that shampoo bottle on the top shelve. Can              you give me a hand, Morinosuke.
（一番上の棚のシャンプーのボトルに届かないんだ、もりのすけ、手伝ってくれる？)
B: I can see you’re a little vertically challenged, aren’t you？
（君はちょっと背が低いんだね）

注意：この表現は、病気の症状などによって身長が低い方には使わないで下さい。失礼になるかもしれません。

This week’s subject is…“Fashion and Beauty” 

“Fashion and Beauty” It’s a brand new subject. We’re excited to unwrap it this week!
In this class we’re going to talk about

Getting ready-beauty and fashion routines we go through as we get ready for work /school/outing and how long it takes.  For example,  I usually get up at around 6:30 on weekdays, take a shower, shave and brush my teeth. I have breakfast, brush my hair and get dressed…

Fashion styles and clothing items–  What’s your favorite fashion style?   Well,  generally speaking, I dress casually. I like to wear something that feels comfortable.

Fashion tips- Please come to class ready to share some fashion tips and tricks with your classmates and or teachers.

I usually wear black leggings because…   You should….
Beauty products/trends and treatments

Language notes: wear,  put on, take off, dress (wear Vs dress)
As always, please do some preparation before the class.

What we are doing in Kensington 

Hello everyone, are you enjoying the pleasant autumn weather and the pretty autumn colors?  Enjoy it before the old man Winter comes to town. 

At Kensington Eikaiwa,  we continue to make effort to help you improve your English language communication skills and achieve your study goals.  

For example, have you noticed lately that our class subjects’ order helps you  practice related expressions/grammar points/vocabulary in several classes?

And as I mentioned in an earlier blog, whenever possible we’re using visuals/photos etc in our classes now, so I’d like to encourage you to bring a photo (if you can ) to class and use it to make a conversation.
