Stereotypes

Hey guys! 

This week’s subject is ‘Stereotypes’. If you have an opinion about me as a person, e.g. “I think Liam is strange!”, then that’s really just an opinion you hold. But, if you were to say that about a group of people, e.g. “I think British people are strange!”, then that sounds like a stereotype. Especially if the meaning is more negative, stereotypes don’t tend to be positive. 

We’ll be talking all about stereotypes, which are often great conversation starters. And they’ll give us a chance to use plenty of adjectives. Nice!

今週のテーマは「ステレオタイプ」です。

もしあなたが私という人間について、例えば「リアムは変だと思う！」というような意見を持っているとして、それはあなたが持っている意見に過ぎません。しかし、例えば「イギリス人は変だと思う！」というように、集団についてそう言ったとしたら、それはステレオタイプのように聞こえます。特に、その意味がよりネガティブなものであれば、ステレオタイプはポジティブなものではない傾向があります。

会話のきっかけにもなるステレオタイプについて話しましょう。そして、形容詞をたくさん使うチャンスでもあります。ナイス！

What we are doing in Kensington
 Futaba open day!

Hello everyone!

This week some of our students are attending open days in Futaba Elementary school. Everyone is very excited to get a look at one of the only full English courses in Fukuoka.
The entrance test will be in November and this will be a great chance for the kids to get a taste of what’s to come then.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lesson
 Connect the expressions learned in each lesson to real life situations or experiences

My study advice this week is to try to tie/connect each new expression you learn to real life situations. If you’re not sure where, when, why and how to use a certain expression, ask your teacher. If you still can’t find use for it, you probably don’t need it.
Use your time and energy on language you can use in real life situations.

Learn the ropes/show someone the ropes

In our bizspeak this week, let’s stick to the “learning” theme and learn how to use the idiom “Learn the ropes /show someone the ropes in a business sense. Learning the ropes means learning how to do something, like a new recruit/employee learning the basics of the new job. And to show someone the ropes is to teach/train them to do something.

A: Hey, Morinosuke, when are you relocating to the Dubai office?

B: Um…I can’t leave before showing the new manager the ropes. 

If you started a new job or changed departments this April, I think you have already learned your ropes, right?

今週もビジネス英会話では、引き続き「学ぶ」というテーマに沿って、
“Learn the ropes /show someone the ropes”というイディオムのビジネスシーンでの使い方を学びましょう。

 Learning the ropes（ロープを結ぶ）は、新人さんが新しい職場で基本的な事を学ぶ様に、何かのやり方を学ぶことを意味します。
そして、 show someone the ropes（ロープを見せる）とは何かをやる方法を教えたり、トレーニングするという意味です。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
English learning and usage in Uganda

My home country Uganda, is one of the 23 countries in Africa that speak and use English in daily life. Typically Ugandans use 3 languages: English, Swahili and a tribal language. English is the official language. All subjects in schools are taught in English, people use English in offices, parliament and other places. We learn or study English at school but I think many kids learn English by using it in their daily life. However, there is now a campaign to teach Swahili and other local languages so that they don’t die out.

I’d like to speak Swahili more fluently. I’m really bad at it.

ウガンダでの英語学習

私の母国ウガンダは、アフリカにある23の国の中で日常的に英語を話す国のひとつです。典型的なウガンダ人は英語、スワヒリ語そして部族の言葉という３つの言語を使っており、英語が公用語です。

学校ではすべての教科を英語で行い、オフィスや議会等の場所でも英語を使います。
私達は学校で英語を学びますが、実際には多くの子供達が日常生活の中でそれを学んでいます。
でも、現在スワヒリ語やその他の地元の言葉を教える施策が行われていますので、それらの言語も絶えてします事はありません。

私はスワヒリ語がとても下手なので、もっと流暢に話せるようになりたいです。

Learning English

Hello everyone, how’s the going at work, home and with your English language study? Speaking of English language study, did you know that over 70% of people who speak English are non-native speakers?  Surprising, isn’t it? 

In most of our classes this week, we’ll be talking about “Learning English”. Please prepare to share about Why you study English, how you study it, what English language skills you’re good or not so good at, what skills you want to improve and how.
