Rules

Hey guys!
This week’s subject is ‘Rules’. 

In life there are many rules that we create or follow, be that at work, home, or as members of the general public. We often use quite specific grammar when talking about rules, for example: ‘We can’t have pets in our building.’ or ‘I have to wear a uniform’. 

In the level 2 classes we’ll also go over some potential situations, such as ‘If you could change an age limit, what would it be?’ The ‘if’ and ‘would’ are the key words to remember in potential sentences, try not to forget them!

規則について

やあ皆さん！


今週のサブジェクトは「規則」です。
生活する上で、仕事や家、一般社会の一員として、私達は沢山の規則を作り守らなければいけません。
規則について話す時はかなり具体的な文法を使うことがあります。

例えば、
‘We can’t have pets in our building.- 私達のビルではペットを飼うことはできません’
 ‘I have to wear a uniform – 制服を着なければいけません’

レベル2のレッスンでは、「もし年齢制限を変更できるとしたら、何をしたいですか？」の様な、いくつかの可能性がある状況についても話します。
「If」と「would」は可能性を表す文章の中で、覚えておくべきキーワードです。忘れないようにして下さい！

What we are doing in Kensingtona
Summer School

Hello everyone!

Kensington’s first summer school came to a close this week. The event, which ran over two weeks, was a great success. We had tons of fun, and the students thrived with coming to an English school up to 5 days a week. 

The students that did come will all be taking an important entrance test for Futaba Elementary School’s English programme in November. It was great to spend a lot more time with them, and give them a taste of a more immersive English experience. They had a blast and did so well, we’re all really proud of how far they’ve come already.

サマースクール

皆さんこんにちは！

ケンジントンの初めてのサマースクールが今週で終わりを迎えます。2週間に渡って行われたこのイベントは素晴らしい成功を納めることができました。子供たちは1週間のうち5日間も英会話学校に通うことで、とても楽しみながら成長することができました。

これらは生徒たちにとって、11月の雙葉小学校の英語プログラムの入学試験に向けてとても重要な経験となりました。彼らはとても楽しい時間を過ごし、良く頑張りました。

彼らとより多くの時間を過ごし、どっぷりと英語漬けの経験を与えるのは素晴らしいことでした。彼らは楽しい時間を過ごし、良くやりました。彼らが頑張って来たことを私たちは本当に誇りに思います。

Our Bizspeak this week is “Catch up on (……)” It means to do something you haven’t had time to do lately. For example, I’ve had lots of zoom business meetings, preparing and giving presentations in the last few weeks. I really need to catch up on my online MBA studies.

Study Advice / How to make most of your lesson
Like a child

No, I’m not saying that you should act like a kid in a language  class, but children tend to learn languages faster than we adults because they’re not afraid to make mistakes, they imitate, repeat phrases when corrected and they have fun while learning. They sing songs, chant, recite poems, rhymes  etc. Do you use any of that in your English study? I sometimes do, in Japanese.

いいえ、私は語学のレッスンにおいて、あなたが子供の様に振舞うべきだとは言いません。でも子供たちは大人よりも早く語学を学ぶ傾向があります。なぜなら彼らは間違うことを恐れず、真似をしたり訂正されたフレーズを繰り返したりして、学ぶことを楽しんでいるからです。
歌を歌い、リズムに乗せて言ったり、韻を踏んだり、詩を朗読したり…

My first car!

Hello there, how’s your weekend going?

Sticking to this week’s theme (our past), let me tell you about my very first car. I bought it when I was a university student in the US. It was a used 1988 or 89 Chevy Celebrity. It was old but in very good condition because the previous owner was a 70-year old lady who used to drive it just a couple of times a month. It had a big engine, so it was pretty fast! The front seat was kind of like a bench (no split between the driver’s seat and the co-driver’s seat)! I loved it. It was a really cool car.

初めてのことについて話そう

皆さんこんにちは、週末をいかがお過ごしですか？

引き続き、今週のテーマ「過去」について。
私が初めて買った車についてお話します。
それはアメリカの大学生だった時のことです。1988年か1989年製の中古のChevy Celebrityで、古かったですが以前の所有者が70才のお婆さんで月に数回しかドライブをしなかったので、とてもコンディションが良かったです。
その車には大きなエンジンがついてたのでとても速かったです。フロントシートはドライバーと助手席の間が分かれておらず、ベンチの様でした。
私はそのとてもかっこいい車が大好きでした！
あなたのクラスメイトや講師達に、あなたの「初めてのこと」を話して下さい。

Talking about your past

Hello everyone,
How’re things going at work, home and with your English communication studies?

This week in most of our classes the topic will be “Talking about your past”. We’re going to share about what we did or enjoyed in the ( early, mid, late 70s, 80s 90…,our childhood, teens, 20s etc)  Where did you go to high school, university and what did you study? Did you belong to any clubs? What pop culture did you enjoy in your teens, 20s…? Our first experiences ( our first jobs, trip abroad, car etc)
Any regrets? What should you have or not done in your past?

Grammar point Level 2-3   3rd conditional
I wish I’d / I wish I hadn’t/ I should have/ Shouldn’t have

I wish I’d studied harder at school.
I should have taken the full time job at Microsoft.
I wish I hadn’t been so lazy in my teens.

お仕事や家庭、そしてあなた英語のコミュニケーションの学習の調子はいかがですか？

今週は多くのレッスンで「あなたの過去について話そう」というトピックを学びます。
70、80、90年代の前半、半ば、後半や、子供時代、10代、20代にどんなことをしたり、楽しんだかについて共有しましょう。

どこの高校、大学へ行き、何を学びましたか？
何かクラブ活動に参加しましたか？
10代、20代はどんなポップカルチャーを楽しみましたか？
最初の経験、例えば最初の仕事、海外旅行、車など…。

後悔していることはありますか？過去にやるべきだったこと、またはやらなければ良かったことは何ですか？
文法のポイント
Level 2-3の生徒さんは、3rd conditional（サードコンディショナル ・仮定法過去完了）を使いましょう。
I wish I’d / I wish I hadn’t/ I should have/ Shouldn’t have

I wish I’d studied harder at school.
学校でもっと勉強しておけばなぁ。

I should have taken the full time job at Microsoft.
マイクロソフトのフルタイムの仕事を受けるべきだった。

I wish I hadn’t been so lazy in my teens.
10代の時にあんなに怠けなければなあ。

Door to the face

There is a sales technique in English business that is called the “Door to the face”. The way it works is you give someone a ridiculous offer that they wouldn’t take, then offer them your REAL one after it.

It’s basically a psychological trick. For example “You can have this phone for $500” “no way, that’s too expensive” “Okay, I’ll do $300”.

$500 is way too much, but $300 is also a lot. But because you are comparing the 300 with 500, you see it as a huge discount, so you believe you’re getting a good deal.

The door to the face is a really, really powerful selling tool!

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Don’t Hesitate to Speak

Sometimes, students hesitate to say what they want to say because on some level, they’re unsure of whether their English is correct or not.

Ignore the idea that your English needs to be “correct”. There is no such thing as perfection, but there is competence, and competence is reached only when you speak and make a LOT of mistakes.

When you make mistakes, you’re learning about what is “wrong” – this means that you now understand what NOT to do, thus giving you the ability to figure out what is “right”.

Failure is the stepping stone to success. Perfection is a boring thing, in my opinion. The strangeness of people is what makes them beautiful.

ミスをすると、何が間違っていたかについて学ぶことができます。つまり、今やってはいけないことについて理解することは、あなたに正解を見極める力を与えるのです。

完璧ではつまらないと私は思います。人々の奇妙さこそが美しいのですから。
