Arranging a night out

Hi everyone,

This week in our classrooms across Fukuoka and online we’ll be practicing how to arrange a night out in English. 

Some of the targets of this class are to use the verb “go” in a variety of situations, practice how to make,accept and refuse invitations and finally how to give suggestions on where and when to meet. 

It’s a fun class and at the time of writing we can still go out in Fukuoka so it should come handy!

採用シーズンがやって来ました！

What we are doing in Kensington
Hiring Season has come!

The beginning of the year is an exciting time, people usually feel very refreshed after the winter holidays and think of new beginnings! For us the beginning of the new year is also officially the start of the hiring season and this year too we’ll be very active looking for new high quality staff for our schools.

At the moment we are looking for 2 Japanese teaching assistants and 2 foreign teachers for our kids’ schools. In the next couple of months and after having seen how the adult school situation is evolving we’ll also make a decision whether to hire one more part time foreign teacher for our adult school. Hopefully business will have picked up and we’ll decide to bring one more new face to our adult school too.

Hiring the right people is hard and it’s impossible to get 100% right. I think in Kensington  so far we have been lucky (and competent!) with our hiring and we have a great lineup of Japanese and foreign staff.

採用シーズンがやって来ました！

年の初めはエキサイティングな時期です。
冬休みの後はリフレッシュした気分なので、人々はよく新たに何かを始めようかと考えます。
ケンジントン英会話にとっては、新年の始まりは正式な採用シーズンの始まりです。
今年も新たに質の高いスタッフを探すために真剣に取り組んでいます。

現在、私たちはケンジントンキッズアカデミー(子ども向け英会話)のために、講師を補助する日本人アシスタント2名と外国人講師2名の募集をしています。
次の数か月で、ケンジントン英会話(おとな向け英会話)の状況を分析し、ケンジントン英会話にも1名のパートタイムの外国人講師を雇うかどうかを決定する予定です。
うまくいってビジネスが回復したら、もう1名の新顔を追加するかもしれません。

適切な人材を見つけることは困難なため、100%適切に採用することは不可能です。
ケンジントン英会話では、これまでのところ、採用は幸運に恵まれ有能な日本人スタッフと外国人スタッフが働いています。

How to improve your reading for the TOEFL test

Hello everyone and a very happy new year, I’m Tim and I’m your Kensington resident Toefl expert. Today I will give you some more information about the TOEFL Reading section. More specifically, I’ll let you know some ways to improve your reading for the TOEFL test.

First and foremost in order to improve your reading you need to practice it a lot. Reading is a skill and as every skill, it gets better the more you do it. For the TOEFL exam specifically academic articles are best. Why don’t you give the Smithsonian Magazine a try? Or how about National Geographic?

Another good way to improve your reading skills for the test is to make passage outlines. For example, pick an article from the web such as this article from National Geographic about the Telegraph and outline the main points.

In my next blog about how to prepare for the TOEFL test I’ll talk about two more ways to improve your reading for the TOEFL test.

私はケンジントン英会話のTOEFLエキスパートのティムです。

今日は、TOEFLのリーディングセクションについてもう少し詳しく説明します。
具体的にいうと、TOEFLテストの読解力を向上させる方法をいくつかご紹介したいと思います。

読解力を向上させるためには、何よりもまず読む練習をたくさんする必要があります。
読解力はスキルであり、他のスキルと同じように、練習すればするほど上達します。
TOEFLテストの読解力を向上させるには、特に学術論文が最適です。
Smithsonian Magazineを試してみませんか？または、National Geographic もオススメです。

読解力向上のためのもう1つの良い方法は、パッセージのアウトラインを作ることです。
たとえば、この記事 National Geographic about the Telegraph のように、Web上にある記事を選び、その記事の要点を概説してみましょう。

来週はTOEFLテストの準備の仕方についてご紹介します。
読解力を向上させるさらに2つの方法についてご説明します。

私自身と生徒さんへの学習アドバイスは、「数ヵ月ごとにシンプルな目標を立てる」という事です。

例えば、次の3ヶ月で講師や他の生徒さんからの質問に3つ以上の文章で答えられる様になる、BBCのニュースを理解できる様になる、仕事のプロジェクトについて、5分間の説明を講師にできるようになる…などです。

Hello good friends, are you having an eventful weekend?  Don’t worry if you’re if you’ren’t. Mine isn’t eventful either. On the theme of Agreeing and Disagreeing, in my home country Uganda, we learn to agree and disagree through debates. Children learn to debate from the 4th grade of elementary school. I think it’s important for children to learn how to agree or disagree respectfully in my country because we have many tribes and religions and cultures. We agree and disagree about many things.

素晴らしい友人の皆さん、こんにちは。予定が詰まった週末を過ごされていますか？
そうでも、そうでなくても心配無用です。私も沢山の予定はありません。

賛成と反対というテーマに関して言えば、私の出身国ウガンダではディベート（討論）を通して同意する事と反対する事について学びます。子供達は小学校4年生からディベート（討論）を学びます。相手を尊重しながら同意したり反対意見を述べる方法を学ぶ事は、私の国では子供達にとってとても大切な事だと思います。なぜなら、ウガンダには沢山の部族や宗教、文化があるからです。

私達は多くの事に同意したり、反対したりしています。

How’s your week going everyone? Hope you’re keeping warm in the cold mid January days. Agreeing and Disagreeing, will be the topic in most of our classes this week. In this class will practice

  • giving short responses in agreement or disagreement to a statement ( me too, so do I, me neither, neither do I …)
  • making  comparisons using er.ier, more(cheaper, tastier, more expensive)  and superlative( est, iest, most (cheapest, the tastiest, the most expensive) 
  •  a number of ways to show agreement and disagreement ( I agree, Exactly! That’s right. Absolutely! I think so too.  Yeah, maybe, I know what you mean but….Hmm I’m not sure about that, Really? Seriously?)

TOEIC Tips on the speaking part of the test

A very happy and prosperous new year everyone. Hope you’all started on those great new year resolutions. Here’s another tip for taking and getting a good score on the TOEIC test.  

In the last blog  I mentioned that the test comprises of  Speaking and Writing, Grammar and structure, Listening and Reading

Tips on the speaking part of the test (11 questions 20 minutes)

  1. Speak loudly and as clearly as possible with whatever accent you may have. It’s not a good idea to try to correct your accent problems during  the test. Do it before the test.
  2. No live examiner(s), you’ll be  wearing headphones and speaking into a microphone. Please practice speaking to yourself before the test and as I said in tip 1 Speak as clearly as possible into the microphone but of course naturally.

皆さん新年明けましておめでとうございます。皆さんの素晴らしい新年の抱負を聞かせて下さい。ここでは、TOEICで良いスコアを取るためのヒントをご紹介しましょう。

前回のブログで、TOEICにはスピーキング、文法、リスニング、リーディングのパートが含まれているとお伝えしました。

スピーキングテストのヒント（11問の質問/20分間）

1．あなたがどんなアクセントだったとしても、できるだけ大きな声ではっきりと話しましょう。テスト中に正しいアクセントにしようと試みるのは良い考えではありません。テストを受ける前にやっておきくべきです。

2．その場に生きた試験官はいません。皆さんはヘッドフォンを装着し、マイクで話します。テスト前には、私がヒント1でお伝えした通り、できるだけはっきりとでも自然に、マイクに向かってあなた自身で話す練習をしましょう。
