Aim Above Your Level 

Hello there everyone! 

In English we have the saying “no pain no gain” which means that if something is too easy then it isn’t doing you much good. The same can be said for language learning. It is good to aim slightly above (but not too far) above your own level so for example if you are finding the level 1 materials too easy, study level 2 as well to expand your vocabulary. This applies to all types of English study, whether it be reading, writing, listening practice or anything at all, always try to go slightly higher than you believe your level to be because there is very little point in cruising in your own comfort zone.Like I said in an earlier blog, my son took eiken grade 3 the other day and while I’m glad it was fun for him, I think there may have been very little point in it. There are many ways to do this. If you are using Kensington materials, try looking at the level above you, if you are reading graded readers and have been going at the same level for a long time try the next level up, the list goes on and on. The only thing to be careful of is not to aim too high, you have to learn to crawl before you learn to walk and if you aim too high the chances are you will either give up or not really be learning much.

みなさん、こんにちは！

英語には、「no pain no gain（労力なくして得るものなし）」という言葉があります。
これは、簡単すぎる場合は、あまり役に立たないことを意味します。
言語学習についても同じことが言えます。
自分のレベルより少し上（ただし、あまり遠くない）を狙うのは良いことです。
たとえば、レベル1の教材が簡単すぎると感じた場合は、レベル2も勉強して語彙を増やしましょう。
これは、リーディング、ライティング、リスニングの練習など、あらゆる種類の英語学習に当てはまります。
自分のコンフォートゾーンに留まっているのはほとんど意味がないので、常に自分のレベルよりも少し高くなるようにしてください。
以前のブログでも言いましたが、先日、息子が英検3級を受けました。
彼が楽しく感じたのは嬉しいですが、それと同時に、あれはほとんど意味がなかったのではないかと思っています。
上のレベルを勉強するにはいろんな方法がありますが、もしケンジントン英会話のレッスン教材を使用している場合は、自分のレベルの教材よりも上のレベルを見てみてください。
長い間おなじレベルでリーディングしている場合は、次のレベルを試してください。
リストはどんどん増えていきます。
注意しなければならない唯一のことは、高すぎる目標を設定しないことです。
歩くことを学ぶ前に、這うことを学ぶ必要があります。
目標が高すぎると、諦めるか、あまり学習しない可能性があります。

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country

Hello there everyone. 

Yesterday was a big day for some of our students because it was Eiken test day! My son also took the test for the first time but unfortunately since I told him I’d buy him a new video game if he passed he decided to take the easy option of level 3 and not pre-2 like I had originally planned.

We went to Fukuoka University for the test this time and I was really surprised by how young some of the test takers were. I think some of them may have been in primary one or two and they looked a bit stressed out to be honest unlike my boy who was busy playing games on his phone in the classroom much to my dismay! 

I contacted some of our students afterwards and they all said it was a bit on the tough side but I have a feeling the results are going to be good after all the practice we put in so fingers crossed. As for my boy he came out of the classroom loudly pronouncing that it was a piece of cake! Can’t wait to see his face when I tell him he needs to take level 2 next ha ha!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介

みなさん、こんにちは。

昨日は英検の日だったので、一部の生徒にとっては重要な日でしたね！
息子も初めてテストを受けましたが、合格したら新しいビデオゲームを買うと言ったので、残念ながら私の当初の計画の準２級ではなく、３級という簡単な方を彼は選びました。

今回は福岡大学に行ってテストをしましたが、一部の受験者の若さには本当に驚きました。
中には小学校１年か２年生くらいの子がいて、少しストレスを感じているように見えました。
正直言って、教室でスマホゲームをするのに忙しかった私の息子とは違い、がっかり！

その後、何人かの生徒さんに連絡を取りました。
少し大変だったとのことでしたが、練習を重ねてきたので良い結果が得られると感じています。幸運を祈ります。
息子は教室から出てくると、簡単だったと大声で言いました！
私は彼の顔を見るのが待ちきれません。次は２級を受ける必要があると言うので。ha ha!

This week’s subject
At the Tourist Information

Hello there everyone, the subject for our classes in Akasaka, Nishijin, and Yakuin this weekend is “At the Tourist Information” In this class we will be learning how to ask and give information when visiting a city in a foreign country, how to get around the town, and giving recommendations on what to see or do while there.

New teaching assistant in the kids’s school
