What we are doing in Kensington
Sprucing up the Akasaka classroom!

As you know Kensington is already eight years old, (time flies) and like most eight year olds it has grown out of its old clothes and is in need of some new ones so we have decided to let our resident interior decorator Miss Keiko Amamoto loose on the Akasaka classroom it to give it a new look. It won’t happen all at once because Keiko is a busy lady working between both the kids’ and adults’ schools but soon enough you should be seeing some big changes and given Keiko’s record so far I’m sure you are going to like them. Watch this space!

ご存じのように、ケンジントン英会話はすでに 8 歳です (時が経つのは速い)。
ほとんどの 8 歳児と同じように、今までの服が小さくなり、新しい服が必要になりました。
なので、私たちのインテリアデザイナー、ケイコ・アマモトさんに、赤坂校の教室を新しい見た目に変えてもらうことにしました。
ケイコはこども英会話と大人英会話の両方で忙しいので、一度には変わらないですが、すぐにいくつかの大きな変化が見られるはずです。
ケイコのこれまでの実績を考えると、きっと気に入っていただけると思います。

【英検対策】スピーキングの答え方と写真描写のコツ

Eiken test level 3 (Speaking test)

When taking the speaking section of the test the questions you will be asked are almost always the same. You will be asked to read a short piece of writing and the question for that is always “Why” so when you read the text find the words “so” or “because” and that is where your answer will be. My students seem to get confused by texts like this.

In Japan, fish is very popular. It is both healthy and delicious. Fish can be cooked in many ways so it is used by chefs in restaurants.

Q. Why is fish used by chefs in restaurants?

A few of my students answered this as “because it is healthy and delicious” which is true but the question asks you about why it is used by chefs in restaurants so please be careful to make sure you are answering the right question. “It is both healthy and delicious” has no connection to why chefs use it in restaurants in this text.

Also, when you are describing the picture you will often be asked about location. Where is the …? so remember to practice things like on the/ under the/ next to the/ in front of the to make your life easier on test day.

Congratulations to my guys who passed the level 3 speaking test by the way! I drilled you hard on it so test day seemed like a breeze for you! Well done!

英検3級（スピーキング）

テストでスピーキングを受験する時、出題される質問はだいたい同じです。
短い文章を読むように求められますが、それに対する質問は常に「Why」なので、文章を読むときには「so」または「because」という言葉を見つけてください。答えはそこにあります。
私の生徒さんたちは、このような文章に混乱しているようです。

In Japan, fish is very popular. It is both healthy and delicious. Fish can be cooked in many ways so it is used by chefs in restaurants.
(日本では、魚はとても人気があります。魚はヘルシーで美味しいです。魚はさまざまな方法で調理することができるため、レストランのシェフが魚を使用します。)

問題：Why is fish used by chefs in restaurants?
(なぜレストランのシェフは魚を使用しますか？)

私の生徒さんの何人かはこれを「because it is healthy and delicious（ヘルシーで美味しいから）」と答えました。
それは正しいことですが、問題はレストランのシェフがなぜそれを使用しているのかを尋ねています。
このように、質問に的確に答えているか注意して確認するようにしましょう。
「It is both healthy and delicious」という文の中には、シェフがレストランで魚を使う理由と関係するものは入っていません。

また、写真描写の問題では、場所についてよく尋ねられます。
「Where is the …?（…はどこですか？）」
そのため、テストを楽にするために、下記のフレーズを練習するようにしましょう。

・on the（〜の上に）
・under the（〜の下に）
・next to the（〜の隣に）
・in front of the（〜の前に）

“Hit it out of the park”

Hello there, Hope you had some R&R (rest & relaxation/recreation) during the weekend.

Our bizspeak today is an American idiom “Hit it out of the park” It means performing or doing something not just well, but extremely or exceptionally well! This expression comes from baseball. Hitting the ball out of the park, means hitting a home run.

Yumi: This quarter we’ve tripled our sales! Great work everyone.

Tom: Thanks to your leadership, Yumi. We’ve hit it out of the park!

今日のビジネス英会話は、アメリカのイディオム「Hit it out of the park」です。
それは、単にうまくいくだけでなく、極端にまたは並はずれて何かをうまく実行することを意味します！

この表現は野球から来ています。
選手が場外にボールを打つ(Hit it out of the park)ということは、ホームランを打つことを意味します。

ユミ：
This quarter we’ve tripled our sales! Great work everyone.
