【ビジネス英会話】ポジティブな言葉を使う – 「challenge」「challenging」

Hello there, did you have a good weekend?
This week’s bizspeak we’re going to change two negative sounding words into positive sounding ones. 

1.problem…challenge

 Yumi:  Keita, can you give us a brief update on the Kensington Digital Data center  project?

Negative:
Keita: We’re having some problems with the new software, I’m afraid.

Positive:
Keita: We have some challenges with the new software, we’ve called the IT team for assistance.

2. Difficult/hard……Challenging

Yumi: Hey Keita,  can you finish the Kensington DDC report by Thursday next week? 

Negative:
Keita: With two of our team members  sick, it’ll be difficult. 

Positive:
Keita: With two of our team members sick, it’ll be challenging but we can get it done by Friday morning.

1.  problem → challenge

ユミ : Keita, can you give us a brief update on the Kensington Digital Data center  project?
(ケイタ、ケンジントンデジタルデータセンタープロジェクトの最新情報を手短に教えてください。)

【ネガティブな言い方】
ケイタ：We’re having some problems with the new software, I’m afraid.
(残念ながら、新しいソフトウェアで問題が発生しています。)

【ポジティブな言い方】
ケイタ：We have some challenges with the new software, we’ve called the IT team for assistance.
(新しいソフトウェアにはいくつかの課題があるので、ITチームに支援を求めました。)

2. difficult / hard → challenging

ユミ：Hey Keita,  can you finish the Kensington DDC report by Thursday next week?
(ねえケイタ、来週の木曜日までにケンジントンDDCレポートを終えることができますか？)

【ネガティブな言い方】
ケイタ：With two of our team members  sick, it’ll be difficult.
(チームメンバーの２名が病気なので、難しいでしょう。)

【ポジティブな言い方】
ケイタ：With two of our team members sick, it’ll be challenging but we can get it done by Friday morning.
(チームメンバーの２名が病気なので、チャレンジング[困難だがやりがいのある]ですが、金曜日の朝までには終わらせることができます。)

【ビジネス英語】「fired（解雇）」ではなく「let go」を使う – Soft Language

Business English, especially in the corporate world, often uses “soft” language to try to give bad or good news in the business world.

Personally, I don’t agree with this – I like to be direct and upfront, but that’s not how business works. For example, if someone is being “let go” in business, they are being fired. We just don’t use fired, because it sounds hard and mean.

Another example is “cutting costs”. Cutting costs can mean that we must reduce amount of money being spent, but a lot of the time it has a hidden meaning – it means “we are losing money and we might not be able to keep the business going”.

A lot of language in the business world is soft and you must learn to read between the lines, in my opinion. Maybe that’s why I’m no good at it, because I’m too direct!

個人的には、これには同意しません。
私は率直で素直であることを好みますが、ビジネスはそのようにはいきません。
たとえば、ビジネスの中で誰かが「let go」されるとは、その人が「fired（解雇）」されることを意味します。
厳しく意地悪に聞こえるので、「fired」という言葉は使いません。

もう一つの例は「cutting costs」です。
「cutting costs」するということは、支出する金額を削減する必要があることを意味しますが、多くの場合、そこには隠された意味があります。
つまり、「お金を失い、ビジネスを続けられなくなる可能性がある」という意味です。

私の意見としては、ビジネスの世界の多くの言葉はソフトであり、行間を読むことを学ぶ必要があります。
おそらく、だから私は苦手なのですね。私は直球すぎる！

Businesses with high staff numbers often talk about “alignment” between teams. This means making sure that different departments are working towards the same goals, and not accidentally competing against each other, or doing similar tasks without sharing what they have learned. 

Even though Kensington doesn’t have such a large number of staff, I think we are about 20 people now, we have realized recently how necessary it is for our staff to first of all know the goals and secondly be aligned towards achieving them. 

How aligned are you with other members in your company?`

Call it a day

Hello everyone, today’s English expression is one that is commonly used by our hardworking receptionist in the adults’ school, Ms Keiko Amamoto. “Call it a day” just means that you are finishing work for the day and here is a real life example of what Keiko san usually says. 

“Hi, I’ll call it a day for now so if there are any more bookings please add them to the list. I’ll reply to the other line messages when I get in tomorrow.”

“Hit it out of the park”

Hello there, Hope you had some R&R (rest & relaxation/recreation) during the weekend.

Our bizspeak today is an American idiom “Hit it out of the park” It means performing or doing something not just well, but extremely or exceptionally well! This expression comes from baseball. Hitting  the ball out of the park, means hitting a home run.

Yumi: This quarter we’ve tripled our sales! Great work everyone.

Tom: Thanks to your leadership, Yumi. We’ve hit it out of the park!

“Remote work / Working from home”

The world is changing a whole lot nowadays, and is focusing on an online work environment where people are beginning to work from home.

In Japan, many people call this remote work or “telework”, but the proper term in English is…well, there are many ways to say it. “I work remotely” “I work from home” “I do remote work” etc.

It’s usually not the case that people say “Telework”, because that generally means that you’re using a phone or work in a call centre. The proper term for the internet is remote work or “I work online”.

Hey everyone,

The business English expression I would like to introduce to you today is one we use in business when we fail to make progress. In those cases we sometimes say that we are “treading water” and sadly is the feeling I get recently in Kensington. Every year we do something exciting like opening up new schools, starting new classes, improving our processes and this year I think we have as well, especially when it comes to test preparation and our lessons for younger learners. Our progress though and our ability to work on new projects has been hindered by the labour market and our difficulty finding highly skilled staff. We’ve had some very promising candidates though recently so things should get better soon!

Today’s business English expression is “be on the same page” which means that the people involved in a conversation have the same understanding of what is being discussed. 

Examples

“Just to make sure we are all on the same page here, we will be holding our meeting online for the foreseeable future won’t we?” 

“Yes, that’s right. At least until the Covid situation has blown over.”

“I’m sorry but I’m not sure if we are on the same page here. Could you clarify points one and two of our last meeting with me please?”

Something that blew my mind when I came to Japan was the art of handling business cards.

It’s pretty serious and there’s a method to doing it here. In Australia, giving a business card is very casual – sometimes we pull one out of our pocket with two fingers and pass it over to the person with one hand.

Doing this in Japanese business culture would be considered super rude, so one thing that both Western and Eastern cultures should learn is – we do things differently, and while it might be rude to you, it might not be for the other person.

Learn from it, adapt and relax!
