Mwaka mpya wa furaha kwako! Upate nzuri

Heri ya Mwaka Mpya!
(スワヒリ語で「Best wishes in the new year!

New year’s holiday in Uganda

Mwaka mpya wa furaha kwako! Upate nzuri

That’s “Happy new year and may you have a good year”, in Swahili.

To anyone who has stopped by our site, and to all our students at Kensington Eikawa, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a truly happy, healthy and prosperous 2024. It’s a new year, so forget all the troubles and bothers of last year. Like a dragon, confidently seize new opportunities and take on challenges that the new year brings.

New year’s holiday in my home country, Uganda

Just like in  many countries around the world, Ugandans happily welcome a new year.

As this Christian Partners for Africa blogger puts it, In Uganda, as the clock strikes midnight on the 1st January, the New Year celebrations begin with an explosion of fireworks, music, shouting and drumming.

Many people choose to stay up to celebrate, knowing that New Year’s Day in Uganda is a public holiday, and is a day off with schools and most businesses closing for the day.” (CPA blog)

Worship and prayers

Uganda is a very religious country. Many Ugandans begin the new year by going to churches, mosques and other places of worship to thank God for going through another year and pray for a good year. In fact, some christian churches rent stadiums and large halls to accommodate large numbers of worshipers.

Food and drink

Although there is no special food eaten on the first day of the year, it’s  customary for people in Uganda to have a good meal and favorite drink on Jan1 wishing to eat delicious meals and enjoy their favorite drinks throughout the year. And people try to avoid conflicts or quarrels with family members or neighbors so they can have a peaceful year.

Politicians send messages of new year wishes to their supporters on social media and other media and the president of Uganda usually addresses the nation on January1.

Unlike in Japan

However, unlike in Japan where the new year’s day (Jan 1) is the beginning of a 3-day holiday, January1 in Uganda is at the tail end of the Christmas and new year’s holiday. Christmas and New Year’s holidays usually start around December 23rd and end on January1. Most Ugandans return to work from January 2nd.

Heri ya Mwaka Mpya! Another swahili phrase meaning “Best wishes in the new year!

New Years Celebrations in Australia

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone reading this had a good new year, and today’s topic is specifically about that – the new year, but in Australia! As with Christmas, Australian New Years tends to be a little different to countries in the Northern Hemisphere, which also attracts many tourists.

Fireworks and Beaches

In Japan, the new year is usually celebrated privately among family gathering together to eat traditional foods such as osechi and ozoni, while also doing things like going to the shrine to wish for a good year, hiking to see the first sunrise of the year, and so on. Japan is very quiet during the new year and roads are particularly silent. Many shops are closed for a few days, too.

In Australia, the new year is more of a party-like celebration. People from various communities would gather in places such as beaches, the city and parks and witness fireworks display’s alongside eating snacks such as ice creams and so on – keep in mind it’s summer in Australia during this time. It’s very common to see fireworks at local beaches where many people gather, so if you’re in Australia at that time, going to a local beach is a good idea on New Year’s Eve.

Countdown and New Year’s Kisses

By the time new years is about to hit, there’s usually a countdown that’s showcased in fantastic illuminations around Sydney Harbour Bridge. This is shown live on TV as well for people who can’t make it into the city. The city is usually absolutely packed with people – who are mostly very drunk – and there are events around the area such as dance clubs, bars and theme parks.

Once the countdown hits zero, people celebrate by saying Happy New Year to one another and there’s also somewhat of a cultural tradition to get a New Year’s kiss. This isn’t just for couple’s – random strangers might sometimes just kiss each other on New Year’s for the fun of it. It’s pretty interesting, and most people are very drunk so they might not even remember it the next morning!

My New Years’ Experience

My personal experience with the new year that I particularly remember was going out with friends in my early 20’s to the city and going to a party at a theme park. It’s a place called Luna Park, and it’s right under the harbour bridge. We went there and had a pretty good time, and when New Year’s hit, we were directly under the bridge seeing an explosion of light right above us. After that, we walked around the city late at night and went to a bar, then eventually went home. I don’t remember how exactly I got home, but I did…somehow.

Australian New Year’s comes recommended, just like the Xmas events. It’s a very different experience, particularly for Japanese people.

ですが一番特別なのは、「first footing(ファースト・フッティング)」と呼ばれるものです。

Here’s to the new year

Cheers to the new year

Out with the old and in with the new.

Here’s to another year of [fun/ laughter/ success/ drinking]

Happy new year!

Hello everyone. We have finally come to the end of another busy year in Kensington. Thanks to our team and all of our students this has been a great year for us especially after the doldrums of the past few years of Covid 19. We have made some changes to the school and system, hired some great new teachers and staff, and generally had a wonderful year. I hope the same can be said for all of you. In my blog today, I’m going to tell you a bit about how we spend the new year in Scotland, what kind of phrases we use at that time of year (and which we don’t) and introduce you to a bit of Scottish culture.

New Year in Scotland (Hogmanay)

New year at home in Scotland is quite different from what it is here in Japan, for one thing it’s a lot livelier.

In Scotland new years’ eve is known as Hogmanay, nobody is quite sure why, but the word possibly comes from the Greek, French, Norse, or Celtic languages and it has been used from as far back as 1443.

There are a number of traditions that some people still follow such as the end of year cleaning, opening the front door at midnight to let in the new year air, bringing whisky, coal, or shortbread to a friend or relative’s house etc, but the big one is called first footing.

First footing starts after midnight on the 31st and usually continues for 3 or 4 days but can sometimes continue longer than that. Traditionally, the first foot to cross your door is supposed to bring you your luck for the year(tall dark men are supposed to bring the best luck) and we are meant to bring one or more of the things above, but nowadays most people just bring booze.

Needless to say, this is a time of much hard partying and it’s not unusual to wake up to find people in your house you have never met before, shops to be closed longer than planned and hangovers to be defeated collectively for those unlucky ones who have to work at the beginning of the year.

Even though it’s freezing ,outdoor parties are also popular at new year, the street party in Edinburgh, which is Scotland’s capital, has about 400,000 people in attendance every year.
Whisky is consumed in large amounts and bagpipes are played, not my favourite instrument I have to say. Some people will eat haggis at new year, a rather unappetising dish made from minced sheep organs stuffed into a sheep’s stomach lining and roasted in the oven. I love it!

New Year’s Greetings

We don’t have 年賀状 as such, people send Christmas cards which usually contain a message for the new year. Please remember that we don’t use congratulations as a new year greeting in English, it’s simply.. Happy new year.

If you get a bit tired of saying or hearing the same thing over and over again then here are some options.

These two are usually said with a glass in hand and meant as a toast.

“Here’s to the new year”

“Cheers to the new year!

Out with the old and in with the new.

You can also say “All the best for the new year” or “Here’s to another year of (add whatever you like here) Example “Here’s to another year of fun/ laughter/ success/ drinking”.

There is one more tradition that we have at home that surprised my wife’s family the first new year I was here. I started humming the tune to Auld Lang Syne after the bells rang that night and my father in law was surprised that I knew the Japanese song 蛍の光.
Sorry, unfortunately this is not a Japanese song it was written by a famous Scottish poet called Robert Burns, and is usually sung at new year after the bells start ringing, or funerals. Most Scots acquaint this song with those occasions so it always makes me laugh a little to think that it signifies the closing of Daimaru at the end of the day or the last subway train.

I hope 2023 was a great year for you and I know I speak for all of us when I say, thank you so much for joining us, we feel lucky to have you as students, and it was a real pleasure teaching you last year. Keep up the good work this year.

All the best for 2024

Jaimie

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Looking back on 2022

Hello again!

If you have been in Kensington Eikaiwa for a while you will have probably taken one of our seasonal classes called looking back on the year and I have to say that at the end of each year I am usually a bit disappointed with myself! I always take a negative view of how I spend each year and think that I should have done more, drunk less, saved more money, been nicer, travelled more, and this that and the next thing, but this year all that has come to a stop. It’s time to be positive and focus on the good points from the year instead.

I did a lot last year. In March I took a trip to Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto and was able to meet up with one of our former staff members Rina ,who despite being pregnant , still looked as youthful and healthy as always and was kind enough to take me out and about and show me around Osaka a bit. I travelled to Miyazaki with my family in May, went on my disastrous but still fun trip to Fuji in July, and even made a brief stop in the UK at the end of October so all in all I’d say that was a pretty good year.

My son is now in first grade of junior high and is, if he keeps growing like this, going to a very big man indeed just like his uncle and grandfather and my daughter is now in fourth grade of primary school and has started hip hop dance classes and learning the guitar with our new teacher Patrick in the Yakuin school as her teacher. Where does the time go? It really seems like yesterday that they were just babies. I succeeded in losing a lot of weight last year ( it was about time) even though my attempts to cut down on drinking beer have failed miserably!

All in all, I’d say that the positives outweighed the negatives last year and from this year on when the end of the year comes I’m going to be focusing on what went right rather than moping about complaining into my wine glass about what went wrong!

Jaimie

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Xmas in my childhood

Xmas used to be the happiest time of year for me when I was a kid. In fact, I’d start counting down to Xmas in October. In my home country Uganda, schools close in early December for  the longest school break (Dec to late Jan).

Around December 15th, my sisters would start decorating the house for Xmas. They put a tall ( real, not plastic) Xmas tree in the living room and played Xmas songs on cassette players. On Xmas morning there were Xmas presents with our names on them, under the Xmas tree. Our family used to go to church on Xmas. I think almost everybody in our town used to go church on Xmas in those days. After church, we would come home and have a great Xmas feast! Our parents used to watch Queen Elizabeth II’s Xmas message on TV at 2:00 p.m. local time.

And oh, we didn’t open our presents on Xmas day. We opened them on the next day (Dec. 26th). December 26th is Boxing Day. The day for opening Xmas presents. I think nowadays most kids in my country don’t wait for boxing day. They open their presents on Xmas day. When I was a kid, we used to wait!

How did you celebrate Xmas when you were a kid?

Merry Xmas!

Henry

Merry Xmas!

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Long Time No Sick

Hi,
In a very big surprise to me over the past week or so, I got sick!

Some students recently noticed that I had a runny nose and looked tired – that’s because I caught a cold. However, unfortunately the cold has become a little more complicated, because I developed an infection in my ear and sinuses.

It has led to some nasty symptoms over recent days, so I went to the doctor and am now taking antibiotics, as my ear is blocked up.

For me, this is surprising because the last time I was very ill like this was about 9 years ago, so it is rare.

Anyway, I’ll be fine, and please take care of yourselves too, especially during winter.

Denny

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
Tim’s 2022

Hello everyone,

It’s very tough to gauge whether I had a good year or not at the end of the year. The biggest problem is that I, as most of us, suffer from recency bias and tend to place more importance on events that happened to us recently. If that’s the case then this year has been terrible for me as my last week was particularly bad.

If I try to avoid recency bias and also try to remember what I did this year. I also need to remember what my new year resolution was this year cause I have no idea what it was anymore. I’ll check and get back to writing this blog!

5 minutes later
Ok I checked my first blog of the year and found out my resolution! It was to always be curious about things. I’d like to as much as possible read and research things that I don’t know with a goal of learning and educating myself as much as possible.

Wow, I actually really did that this year. I’ve read a tonne of books so far, and I have studied about many things I knew very little about, mainly astronomy and science. I also managed to study Japanese a fair bit and I think if I keep it up in a year or two I’ll be fairly fluent in it which would be super helpful.

I will post about my favourite books of the year on our Yakuin blog before the holidays so please check it out for those of you that like reading and are interested in my recommendations.

Thanks!

Tim

Thanks!

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
a quick trip home

Hi there!

Last month I had to make an unscheduled visit to the UK and even though it was a bit of a mad dash I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it (except the 13 hour layover in Helsinki airport that is).  It’s been a few years since I last went back so no big surprises for me this time. The last couple of times I felt like a complete alien in my own country because I hadn’t been back for so long.  There were a couple of things that occurred to me while I was there though. One thing that struck me was the rest of the world really seems to have moved on from covid. There are no restrictions, the number of infections doesn’t appear on the news and most of all nobody is wearing a mask anymore. On my first day back I asked my brother if I should bring one with me when we were going out and  he looked at me like I was crazy and said “What for? ” The other thing was that I am very out of practice at small talk. The Scots are a friendly bunch and due to the amount of time I have spent in Japan I’m a bit taken aback when shop staff or waiters etc strike up a conversation with me. I’m just not sure how to react!

I had a chance to meet up with friends who I haven’t seen for a long time, some for almost twenty years actually and yes, we partied Scottish style so I was exhausted when I got back and the price of international flights right now is kind of beyond a joke but all in all it was a nice little trip. Can’t wait to go back longer next time round!

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
My childhood pet

Hello everyone, any big plans for the weekend?  It’s time to tell you a little about myself/culture/country…
Sticking to the week’s theme “Animals and pets”, I’ll tell you about my childhood pet.
I had a pet dog when I was kid.He was a mixed breed dog, so I didn’t know exactly what breed he was.He looked like a lion, so I named him Simba. Simba means lion in Swahili.
I used to walk him and play with him in the park. He used to follow me everywhere.
I taught him some tricks. He was a very loyal dog.
One day, he got run over by a car! I was devastated!
I never had another dog.
Please tell your teacher and classmates about your childhood pet, if you had one.
Thanks.
Henry

Thanks.

Talk about myself/my hometown/my country
The Australian Summer Comes

From this month onward, Australia is going to get real hot, because the seasons are opposite over there – it’s summer there when it’s winter here.

This means the days will get hot, the beaches will get very busy, and the sun will burn you easily if you don’t use sunscreen. It’s also a good time to head to Australia for a holiday, but a strong warning – because of the current global issues, it’s very expensive!

If you do go however, I recommend checking out Sydney and the beaches there. It’s great at this time of year.
