Expressions with “go on a …”

Hey everyone,

There are so many expressions using the word “go” in English and they come in many different patterns. One of them is “go on a …” 

Here are some expressions commonly used,
Go on a date, go on a trip, go on a diet, go on a picnic, go on a business trip, go on a hike etc……

Ex. I’m going on a date this weekend with my girlfriend. Do you know any good places in Tenjin?

Ex. Mr. Sonoda went on a business trip to Fukuoka for 3 days. He is looking for a good location for an English school.

英語には「go」という単語を使った表現がたくさんあり、いろいろなパターンがあります。
その中のひとつに、「go on a … 」があります。

よく使われる表現をいくつかご紹介します。

[例文]
I’m going on a date this weekend with my girlfriend. Do you know any good places in Tenjin?

This week’s subject
Going Out

Hey everyone,

This week’s subject will be Going Out and is a great class for basic grammar review. We are going to be practicing the 4 basic tenses (Present Simple, Past Simple, Future, Present Perfect) and use the verb “go” in a variety of expressions.

It’s a very useful class especially for our lower level students but also good grammar review for our more advanced speakers.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts

This is an expression that I really love. I think the best marriages work this way, when people have skills and ideas that help elevate the achievements of a couple to something so much bigger and better than each person could achieve on their own.

The same applies to companies and more specifically teams, working in teams can be a pain at times and it can be bumpy and messy but when teams work well together, the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

Please try and use this expression,

最高の結婚はこのように機能すると思います。二人が何かを達成するのに必要なスキルやアイディアを持っていれば、それぞれが一人で達成できることよりもはるかに大きくて良い成果が得られるでしょう。

同じことが会社、より具体的にはチームにも当てはまります。
チームで作業することは、時には苦痛であったり、浮き沈みがあったり、面倒なこともあります。
しかし、チームがうまく連携すると、the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts（全体は部分の総和に勝ります。）

Study Advice / How to make most of your lessons
Start a learning habit

Hello everyone,

As we have mentioned a number of times in this space, a very important step to language acquisition is starting a learning habit. 

The logic behind making it into a habit is that the more you do something the easier it becomes and the better you become at it. 

I read recently a book called “Atomic Habits” which recommends us to do our best and make keeping the habit as easy as possible. For example, one thing you could do is to place your English textbook on your breakfast table so you can easily see it and study it in the morning. 

Another thing the book recommends is to start really small, it recommends us to first make a target of keeping that habit for 2 minutes each day. That is something that everyone can do right! After that we can build on that and expand. I think it’s a really good idea actually, and much much better than setting really hard unrealistic targets.

このブログで何度もお伝えしているように、言語習得の非常に重要なステップは、学習の習慣づけを始めることです。

習慣化することの背後にあるロジックは、何かをすればするほど簡単になり、上手になるということです。

私は最近、「Atomic Habits」という本を読みました。
この本では、最善を尽くし、習慣をできるだけ簡単に維持できるようにすることを勧めています。
たとえば、朝食のテーブルに英語の教科書を置けば、簡単に朝に教科書を見て、勉強することができるようになります。

この本では、非常に小さなことから始めることも推奨しています。
まず、毎日 2 分間その習慣を続けることを目標にすることをお勧めしています。それは誰もができることです！
その後、その上に構築して拡張することができます。
それは実際にとても良いアイデアだと思いますし、非常に厳しい非現実的な目標を設定するよりもはるかに優れています。

My favourite TV Show

Hello everyone,

I usually don’t spend so much time watching stuff on TV but my family was away for a couple of days in Obon and Kensington was on holiday during that time so I did something I rarely get the chance to do anymore. Binge-watching! I binge-watched the last season of Better Call Saul which is one of my favourite dramas ever. 

The last season came out this year and finally I finished it last month. How was it? Great!!! As mentioned before, it’s one of the best dramas ever. Please give it a try if you haven’t watched it already.

What are your favourite dramas?

This expression is binge-watching and it means watch something (usually a drama) for a very long amount of time.

This week’s subject is about TV shows. It’s a very practical subject with an emphasis on natural conversation about the TV shows and dramas we watch. 

Some of the things we’ll be doing include:

1. Practice how to ask back and continue the conversation
2. Talk about our TV viewing habits and favourite programs
3. Use some very useful adjectives to describe our favourite programs such as “hilarious, dull, thrilling etc…”

It’s always a great subject to teach this subject so looking forward to seeing you in class!

What we are doing in Kensington
Training

This summer was especially busy in Kensington, we held our summer school for our K3 and K2 students and it was very successful for our students although sadly Covid-19 disrupted some of our plans.

After the holidays, our focus has changed to training and improving our skills. We have hired two new full time assistants in our kids school this summer and now is the time to work on everything they need to know and integrating them successfully to our team.

It’s hard work but very rewarding. We have very high expectations of our employees and we have a responsibility to help them meet them.

この夏、キッズスクールでフルタイムのアシスタントを2名採用しました。

大変な仕事ですが、とてもやりがいがあります。

Businesses with high staff numbers often talk about “alignment” between teams. This means making sure that different departments are working towards the same goals, and not accidentally competing against each other, or doing similar tasks without sharing what they have learned. 

Even though Kensington doesn’t have such a large number of staff, I think we are about 20 people now, we have realized recently how necessary it is for our staff to first of all know the goals and secondly be aligned towards achieving them.
